That was a cool interview. A great deal of interesting topics discussed there too. As much as i like to hear Buzz talk about the band i think i often prefer to hear Dale's side of things.

Thanks for the Dale interview.  I composed a fairly lengthy vituperative rant against Nirvana on another thread and made some less than flattering comments about this Lady interviewing Dale on the Iphone.  The comments suggested, roughly, that the interviewer seems like she wanted to accuse Dale of something for working with Scion. 
Maybe this wasn't the case, but it's what it sounded like to me.

Seems like a boring kind of axe to grind but these sort of second guessing blackguard tactics leave me cold and always have. 
But Buzz is proven correct once again, people will not give them the benefit of the doubt - even when they are giving away FREE EP's!!!

If I ever get an opportunity to "interview" Buzz and/or Dale I would most certainly not bring up Nirvana.  I would also refrain from questioning the band's tactics, collaborations. 

Tell ya what I'd love to do...I'd LOVE to have a conversation with Buzz about motion pictures and have a tape recorder running.  Just allow this man to speak, if he's of a mind to.  I applaud the less formal conversational approach utilized by the Lady doing the Dale interview.

Why should an interviewer be soft with an interviewee? I mean, that's kinda the role of journalism. To investigate, probe, question? If it's just a fluff piece to sell records who cares? That's boring. Especially if your a fan and already know all that shit.

Did she sound like she had a Scion axe to grind? Yeah, maybe. So what? There is a certain distrust of corporations in our society ... especially concerning the etos of punk (rock). Hell even concerning the mainstream (NY's This Notes' For You anyone?) the marriage of corporate intrests to "Rebel Music" has until fairly recently been a pretty touchy subject in some circles. So for a band birthed from, influenced by and who have in turn influenced that scene it seems like a fair/understandable line of question. No different than asking a totally DIY kinda band why they operate the way they do.

They seem comfortable with their decision to work with Scion. I don't think its unfair or offesive to ask they're reasoning in regards to their punk roots. Their answers have been pretty clear "yeah, we don't give a shit bout those kinda rules".

It's that kinda mentality they carry, those tactics you speak of that make them the band they are. It's what makes Melvins the head scratcher they are ... what makes it all interesting and unpredictable ... seems a pretty obvious thing to ask about?

As for Nirvana ... not so much.

Same here. I had to put the volume up a little bit and obviously her voice dominates but what more do you want? A cool, fairly long interview that covers a great deal of stuff. I was happy to listen to it.

You are right actually.  I failed to consider the punk roots of the band and the fact that a collaboration with a company would appear suspect to many.  Guess my brain wasn't functioning at full capacity.  Furthermore, I did not mean to suggest that interviewers pander to the band or "go easy" on them.  I feel like better questions could be asked but that's easy for me to say from my position, I suppose. 

But I think that the majority of the interviews I've read, dealing with musicians anyway, skirt journalism entirely.  That is to say, I do not consider rock writers to be journalists.  That's my perspective on it and not something set in stone, or carbonite  for that matter.

Oh yeah, I hear ya there ... music journalism, ha! Rarely has anything to do with music and even less to do with journalism. That's why I mentioned the fluff nature ... pretty indicative of music journalism all around. Most of that shit just sounds like extended rambling adverts geased and honeyed by some kinda payola.

There almost always can be "better questions asked" and this interview is no different. Though it wasn't too bad and informative on some fronts. Plus it gave Dale a chance to ramble a bit ... don't see that so much.

Yes the iPhone thing was kinda irritating. What I found funnier though was how she alluded that it was somehow gonna be a drum interview? I think there might have been a couple drum centric questions right at the end ... but they were pretty surface ... who are you influences, how long have you played kinda stuff ... no real drum meat.
