Better double, than none.

There's an Ebay seller who seems to be making bootleg Melvins T's.

He's got the Melvins 'Beef' 2000 Tour shirt, but it only shows the front and not the print that was on the back and the image he's using is clearly of an original T-shirt and that looks like he just stole the image from someone else's listing, so he's probably buying the original vintage shirts for $$$ and then copying them to some degree, or it's completely bogus.

I really want to know if it's worth buying, as I love my original shirt but can't bring myself to wear it out any further as I have now retired it and need a clone or copy to enjoy regular wear.

I'm wondering if this is legit even, or a scam maybe?

The shirt picture he's using was taken from another auction by ichibanfinds, check out how he photoshopped out the tag in the picture. That said, you'll probably get a shirt with a similar design, on a Gildan shirt. He really should just use a picture of the actual shirt he's selling.

Bootleggers of merch make generally me sick.

Only thing I can think of where I might consider it OK is if there was like some bullshit legal reason the artist can't sell their own, such as it's a play on a trademark and was sent an injunction that I morally object to. If you really want a shirt that you can't have any more make your own. But don't commercially support bootleggers. If that seems like "too much work" or it's "too expensive" that's still no excuse to pay someone to steal from your idol.

Dumpster D

I'm not gonna buy from that seller.

At this point if I really want one *That* bad, I'll have to hand screen print my own, using my original shirt, done and done.

Tempted because I love my original Melvins T-shirt so much I want another one I can still wear out, no worries. That shirt was something I got on my 16th birthday at the Toronto show, it's sentimental.

For years I've been thinking about finding a T-shirt company that would make me a 'one-off' clone copy of my original vintage shirts in general, as some of the shirts in my collection are too worn, valuable/rare or vintage to actually make them wearable anymore. My friend had the singles 1-12 Amrep skull T, it was red print, and awesome, and I wanted a copy of it somehow, and we were trying to find a place that would make a one-off copy or something. It's just something that always seemed like more time and money than it's worth.

So now that some of these original shirts are selling for asshole money online...The idea of making reproduction copies might actually put a stop to that ridiculousness, yet I don't really want to support sketchy bootleggers either.

PepsiMike

There are a few places online that will make one-offs, for personal use.

Shirt prices for old band shirts have gone insane within the last few years. Certain collectors seem willing to pay crazy prices, I'm curious what caused it.  Lots of predator collectors on Facebook, as well. For example. They'll post something like 'post pictures of your old favorite band shirts!' And the people that do, will get friend requests + direct messages, saying 'let me know what you have, I'll buy it!' And no surprise, they'll get lowball offers, hoping the people don't realize what they have.

Dumpster D

Apologies in advance for this off-kilter rant.

Talk about bootlegger scum, how about insane thrift store flipper scumminess?

Put it this way, I've been a religious value village goer since the brown album came out.

Ebay prices are destabilizing thrift store prices, also because of the astronomical shipping rates and too many people trying to get more than retail value for their second hand schlock.

VHS tapes are a good example, if you look at sealed VHS on Ebay.

I'm not an online flipper, but more and more I go to thrift stores, the more I see this happening.

There are now apps being used for people to ID items and instantly find their value. I've always flown by the seat of my pants when I see an item that looks pretty good and just have a gut feeling to pick it up.

Value Village and Talize (Which is a relatively new chain of 'thrift stores') Seem to be switching management and ownership ( I suspect Wal-mart) The logistics supply chain has also been diverted from private estate liquidations, and more towards retail outlets who are flushing old inventory to make way for new stock. The Value village prices reflect this as well. They are now trying for at least %60 retail value on items.

They were asking $29.99 for a VHS copy of 'Return of the living dead' with NO cover!!! Last time I was at Talize, and you know they got it too. I went home and looked it up online, sure enough, sealed 'first pressing' copies are reaching over $1000 USD on ebay sometimes. I'm not giving you more than $2.99 for a 40 year old fucked up video tape.

Same with a vintage portable radio at Talize last week, someone else had removed the price sticker where you could still make out that it was like $40 or so...I tried to bring it up and the girl rang it up and it was going to be a whopping 56.99 total, I said NO WAY...NOOO way, sorry, but you can keep it..NO batteries, no power cord, no way to test it...I used to get those for under $9.99..sometimes $4.99. So then, WHY...WHY WHY is the price gouging happening? They're paying employees to use iphones to look shit up online, it's the only thing that makes sense. Don't get me started about the tiredness of old electronic components either, 50 year old capacitors? They *WILL* Fail.

Every once in awhile a little elf in the back room slips up and a good quality item gets passed through with a good bargain price, but as a gambler myself, it's become too dicey and the stakes are too high now with the cost of Gas.

I can't always count on stupidity.

They moved the aisles too close together now, which is a psychological move to make people want to just grab their shit and get the hell out of there before coming to their senses about all the useless crap they are stuffing into their carts. Too many flippers, too many online flippers overstuffing their shopping carts.

I'm honestly ready for 'full-contact' thrift store shopping the way people are clogging up the narrow isles too, you better believe it.

'EXCUSE ME PLEASE' ...Hot stuff coming through.  :)

Anyway, T-shirt prices in the thrift stores are insane now, like 11.99 CDN for a T-shirt, and I've held up a wool sweater against a T-shirt and the sweater was like 8.99, so the value is all out of skew.

Today I saw a long sleeve T-shirt with a Button up V-neck that I liked, it was 14.95. I said out loud, OK I'M DONE. and walked out. At best it's worth 4.95...maybe...MAYBE. Especially to what is a by donation %100 profit organization.

I'm not gonna start about the poly material everything's now made of either, cheap crap that isn't hardly bio-degradable...Save the planet eh? I always hear the value village commercial announcement that says something like 'by shopping at ---- you help save millions of tons of clothing from going into the landfills each year' ...and I just shake my head, you know?

And ANOTHER thing, I definitely see scrotey looking employees bringing stuff out from the back rooms and CLEAR as day you can see their buddies waiting in the isles to pick the good stuff up, because they got the Text message tip-off.

I promise you, there's an inside network happening.

Believe me, I thought about cashing-in a few times...What with the Original TOOL and NIRVANA Shirts in my stash man...but something inside me just says no. Shit ain't right.

I'll add this much more to it... That I sometimes will deal with a vintage clothes picker who makes a house-call and will buy a lot of vintage clothes from my personal collection. They got wise and now all of a sudden, they're after my T-shirts...Like you would not believe...They would clean out my closet if given half a chance, but those you cannot, nor shall not have.

I've never sold any of my T-shirts, all my cool wool flannel Jackets are gone now, all my amazing vintage Jeans and Bellbottoms etc. gone gone...but the 70's T-shirts and the ringer T's no way, not ever.

I have an original 70's era MC5 ringer T-shirt, you know? Stuff like that.

They have been bugging me now for several years to get me to let go of my vintage T-shirts, and I've repeatedly had to tell them no, sorry, not for sale, you can't have them.

They simply can't and won't give me what I know they're worth, and they're just too rare and hard to find anymore at any price.

Dumpster D

Also, I stand corrected...No one has bought that fucked up VHS copy of 'Return of the living dead' at the thrift store for $29.99 (with no cover) yet.

Hope someone just throws it into the bin with all the 'used blank' cassettes they have been tossing out for decades.
