damn, this is the straightest poll yet.  usually there are at least 3 poll answers that make no sense, or force you to answer a certain way.  i like this new format it's so...logical.

I found them through Tool, and then later found out that it was Nirvana who also were connected.

MELVINS : making ear deflorations since 1984

Eponymous

I'm not sure, but I think it might have been via Helmet.

Dr. Gonzo

I found out about the Melvins on a Stoner rock website (stonedgods.com)... I was at the time getting into stuff like Kyuss, Fatso Jetson and read the CD reviews for Stag, Houdini, Stoner Witch, and HAT. THese guys seemed awesome (even the album covers) and being a stoned dumbass I ofcourse got the album Stoner Witch first. I thought it was pretty damn cool, never made put them on my favourite band list but was pretty fucking awesome. Then a month later I heard Toy, and just got all their albums and got a much greater respect for Stoner Witch. Bootlicker and Stag put them in my favourite bands category, as if the others wouldn't of if I had listened to them first instead.

Check out the CD reviews on that site.

The first song I heard was Queen when a friend popped it in his player as we were driving around town back in late '92 - early '93. He told me it was the heaviest stuff he'd ever found. I was completely blown away.

After I bought a few albums, I was surprised to find out about their connection to Nirvana. But then again, I never payed much attention to Nirvana. I was more into Alice in Chains, Soundgarden and Tool back then.

What's stranger to me than how I found out about The Melvins is how much The Melvins opened me up to music other than metal.  There are so many strange atmospheric ditties on the "Atlantic Trilogy" that really got me to start buying soundtracks and instrumental stuff. I know for a fact that repeated listens to Black Bock totally prepped me for Ween when I got into them years later. The same goes for Shevil, which led to bands like Mogwai and Tortoise, and Goggles led to Melt Banana. Not that those songs necessarily sound like those bands, but I can honestly say that they influenced those choices. There's also a psych band called Circulatory System which I would have never bought their CD had I never opened myself up to Stag.

EGO the Living Planet

It was Nirvana among others. I heard about them on acount of their general connection to the Seattle grunge scene

TOOL

Actually, I guess I got into them through L7. (whatever happened to them?)  But, the 1st time I saw L7, they were opening for Nirvana at their benefit concert at the Cow Palace in SF.

What year was it? 93 or 94? I had tickets to see L7 at the Catalyst in Santa Cruz and the Melvins were one of the opening bands. I had only heard of them, not heard their music. Houdini had just come out so I bought it a couple weeks before the show to check out their music. I HATED it!

They blew me away at the show and I guess "got it" right away. Never looked back.
There's a lot of things blamed on me that never happened.  But then, there's a lot of things that I did that I never got caught at.
