I am a fairly new Melvins fan. Got in to them mainly thru Fantomas.

So far, I have four Melvins albums: Houdini, Bride Screamed Murder, Senile Animal, and Nude With Boots.

I do not like every single song on any of these albums, but the ones I like I dont just like I LOVE.

Please name your top five favorite Melvins albums. Where do I go from here in terms of albums to get next?

Get Stoner Witch. Listen to it over and over again until you completely understand it.

Then get all the other Melvins releases.

Except Stoner Witch or Lysol for Maggot. Maggot was heavy, but a lot of songs went nowhere.

Ill try and help you here. Houdini, Senile animal, Bride screamed murder are 4 of the Melvins most straight foeward titles. If you like those your next step should be Stoner Witch and Hostile Ambient Takeover.

I'll try to categorize most of the albums for you. I hate categorizing, but im trying to do this if i were introducing Melvins to a stranger. I might put some albums into 2 categories.

Straight-forward Melvins albums (Albums on the whole that have a mainstream feel with none to low experimentation)
-Houdini
-Stoner Witch
-Hostile Ambient Takeover
-A senile animal
-Nude with boots
-Bride screamed murder

Dark, Sludgey, Heavy riffs and drums (Best listened too VERY LOUDLY)
-Ozma
-Bullhead
-Lysol
-Eggnog
-Houdini
-Stoner Witch

Fast riffs, Punk feel, early Melvins
-Gluey Porch Treatments
-Ozma
-Mangled Demos

Moderately experimental Albums (Melvins at heart but with a different taste)
-Stag
-The Maggot
-King Buzzo, Dale Crover, Joe Preston EP's

Very experimental albums. You will learn to like these or hate these. They take a lot of time. Its possible to like only some parts and dislike the other parts. Heavy synth and electro on Honky, Electroretard, Pigs, Colossus
-Honky
-Prick
-The Bootlicker
-The crybaby
-Electroretard
-Pigs of the Roman Empire
-Colossus of Destiny

hope this helps

My top 10:
Lysol
Bullhead
Houdini
Stoner Witch
Senile
Nude
Eggnog
Gluey
Ozma
Hostile Ambient Takeover
"Sweet Melinda, the peasants call her the goddess of gloom.
She speaks good English and she invites you up into her room."

. . . They're an awesome band, awesome live and with fantastic songs too yet - for me at least - somehow they have never really made an all out, flat out super masterpiece record . . . one of the things that struck me was that they dont have a stinker record, every single one had quality. Mind you that was before i heard COD!  :?

Melvins never made an all out, flat out super masterpiece record? No offence but did your Moms drop you on your head as an infant? That's just crazy talk kid! I can think of several I'd list as all out, flat out super super duper masterpiece records.

So, just outta intrest then, what records by whom would you class as all out, flat out, super masterpiece records?

Top 5? I donno, don

Go sit in your room and think about what you've said. We'll call you when we've decided what to do with you. And don't get any hopes up of going out with your friends this weekend.

Hey settle down guys!!  :) Im not saying the albums aren't great, they're usually stuffed full of awesome tunes its just for MY tastes i always find the odd one or perhaps two songs that (again) for ME as marvellous as they are dont really quite do it. As i would term it, for a record to be a truely remarkable not even half a poor song should be present! I guess i just have really, stupidly high standards to declare something as utterly great. As for which bands/albums are masterpieces i would answer very, very, very few are however i would definitely single out both 'Variations On A Theme' and 'Pilgrimage' by Om as releases that reach the nesessary high water mark test. You're certainly welcome to disagree with me on this tho.
