complains whenever I try to play Melvins tracks around him, and is always saying stuff like "they suck, all their songs sound identical, they never do anything different or interesting". This is especially ridiculous and ironic considering his all-time favorite band who he never stops going on about the brilliance of and getting hyped over new stuff from and making people listen to is fucking Bad Religion.

This made me lol.
Says Melvins "never do anything different or interesting" yet Bad Religion has always been on the for front of cutting edge music!
I love it. I will always love Suffer and No Control but Bad Religion has been on the cutting edge of how NOT to make music for the last 25/30 years?

Great first post DToxico.

Thanks!

Lol, yeah, it baffles me how he keeps talking about having seen them live twice and therefore "knowing" what he's talking about and "knowing" enough about their catalogue to completely dismiss them, but then things will happen like me playing "Honey Bucket" (IE something that, if they didn't play live when he saw them, they probably at least played something similar to) while he's in the car, him saying it's awesome and asking if it's Metallica or Mastodon, me telling him it's the Melvins, and his jaw dropping and going "wow, this is really creative and outside-the-box by the Melvins' standards!" Though it's always back to bitching when I try to play anything by them where he knows that's what's coming. I've gotten him to like several of their songs by not saying who played them, apparently it's just being by the Melvins that makes them suck. Who knew?

He's just a weird guy. He's incredibly averse to ever hearing so much as a note of Faith No More or Mr. Bungle's music because he read an interview with his other all-time favorite band, Dillinger Escape Plan, stating that they were influenced by those bands. He had never even heard of them and now he constantly shits on and avoids both of those like the plague still without ever having heard either because, in his words, "why taint my brain with inferior similar-sounding bands when I could just be listening to the greatest band in the world themselves? They're obviously less-evolved and not going to be anywhere near as good as Dillinger so why bother giving a chance to what are basically weak imitations that just happened to come first?" I seriously don't understand that logic. But I digress.

Man, most of the kids in my hometown who were into any punk albums released prior to the 00's usually had Social Distortion as their old-school-punk-band-of-choice and I never knew why. They were up there with the Pantera/Slipknot kids with acting like their music was the most rebellious thing out there and that you should be terrified of them for liking it but most SD songs I've heard sounds like Mike Ness took a whole bottle of downers before writing or recording anything. Not to say it's awful, it's just so safe.

@ DToxico, sometimes life just hands you a gift like this, where someone lets you know up front that they have total shit for brains and you should cut them loose. Unless you live in a tiny town and this cat is the slim pickins you have to hang out with, cut the dead weight loose already!  :D

I have a friend that's kind of like this.  When I first got into The Melvins it was almost like he refused to like them because he wasn't the one who discovered them.  I sent him Queen and Mombius Hibachi.  He hated both because the drums didn't make sense to him.

A few years later I was blaring Yuppie Cadillac and he loved it.  He looked awkwardly embarrassed when I told him it was the Melvins.  Fast forward another 7-8 years and I'm blaring City Dump and he's like,

"woah this is cool!  Is this Rob Zombie?"

"No...it's The Melvins"

"Oh....."

For whatever reason it seems the Melvins have developed a reputation for playing a single reverb drenched note for their entire concerts.

I can't even remember how many people I've talked to that say this to me when mentioning the Melvins live.
I'm thinking maybe they leave before the first song ends, as I've noticed they usually start their shows with slow burners.

Well, they did do some tours in the 90's opening for bands where it seemed they were purposefully fucking with the audiences.
Hail, not fail.

Good point, now that i think of it I've never seen the Melvins open for another band (except for Jelvins)

(PAUL)

I saw them open for Down and they were on point that night, but they seemed to actually want to do that tour, as opposed to opening for White Zombie.

Same here!  I actually would have gotten into The Melvins a lot sooner if my brother didn't talk me out of listening to them.  It's a long story but to this day I still have trouble getting him to talk about their set opening for Tool in 1998.  At worst, "it was just awful noise the entire time!" and at best it's, "oh I arrived at the end of their set and wasn't really paying attention."  I got a free copy of Honky from him though so I can't complain too much!   :D

I remember finding the setlist from the show he saw and saw that they closed with Boris that night.  Maybe they played extended intros and/or outros that turned off a lot of people who weren't really paying attention.  It's the best I can figure.

That guy's a keeper!  =D>

Yea he's a huge douche bag and I barely talk to him anymore.  He used to hate the Back to the Future movies and I could never figure out why.  After arguing with him for years about why they were good movies do you know what finally changed his mind?

...actually watching the movies.....he's a fucking idiot.

The very first time I saw the Melvins was opening for NIN. I was really worried because I heard the stories of them getting booed off stage opening for Primus. The concert was in Topeka Kansas of all places so I was sure they were going to get fucked with. Much to my surprise they got a really good response from the audience and it was great! Part of me had wished they did get fucked with just  to watch them torture the crowed but it was my first time so I'm glad it went smoothly and to this very day I'm still shocked that it went so smoothly!

Did Fred Phelps picket that one? GOD HATES MELVINS would make a funny shirt, come to think of it.

I lived in Topeka during the spring/summer of '99. Saw Fred's minions on occasion.
Is Ian back yet??

But of course! I remember Trent saying something about it during NIN. I grew up in Topeka (I was NOT born there though) So I remember him from about as far back as I can remember. he and his family would always picket Gage Park on the weekends because that was were gay fellers would cruise. Eventually he started to get national the first time he picketed a funeral. I guess you could say I remember them before they became stars! I went to high school with two of his grand kids, one of them being in my class. Ole' Ben Phelps. He kept to himself and we would fuck with him in the later years of school. He grew up to be the one to make www.godhatesfags.com.
Actually Thanksgiving this year I'm going back to see my family, which usually takes place in Manhattan which is were I was born and where I say I'm from, because fuck Topeka, but anyway this year we're going to my uncles parents for T Day and they live in Topeka. This will be the first time I've set foot in Topeka inn well over a decade. Ugh fuck Topeka. I don't want to go on a tirade but I'm really sad to see what my home state has become. Brownback is pure evil and he's destroying the place but they voted for him so whaddya do?

I think I might just have a shirt made to say GOD HATES MELVINS in the horrible bright coloring they use. That would be awesome.

*edit- oh shit I just put a link up to WSB website. Whoops!
