Listening to this tonight (for the millionth time) . There are so many Tim Blake noises in this, I had to double-take a couple of times and convince mysef they weren't Gong samples.

This lands in my heart somewhere similar to Egg Nog - an essential part of the catalog, loads of great songs that you'd love to hear live. Even though the running time of this one is plenty long, it simply doesn't feel like you're getting a full experience once it's over. It leaves you wishing there were more of it, but not a thing you could imagine changing about it.

Finally starting to come around on this one! The heavy and weird rule here! The Bloated Pope is the perfect song!

Personally i think it is a really great Melvins album. Put it this way - it would sail into my top 10. Agreed on 'The Bloated Pope', that one is easily one of my most liked Melvins songs.

the bloat

Was just spinning this tonight, and I think the title track still contains two of their best riffs. An excellent album front to back with lots of surprises and unexpected twists. It holds up really well!

Hearing live versions of the track "Pigs of the Roman Empire" from around this time have given me a new appreciation. It really is a two part instrumental riff monolith. Or a bilith, perhaps.

this album is a true masterpiece.also great production by Toshi. together with HAT and the double Jelvins, some of his best works on Melvins stuff

I always assumed Lustmord had more to do with the sound than Toshi. It is a masterpiece, right enough.

When did Toshi move studios? Curious if that had anything to do with it. I think around 2011 I'd say the Melvins recordings hit a patch of middling quality. Curious if it coincides, maybe different preamps, mics, or something?

But then Five Legged Dog sounds amazing.

That ties in. Freak Puke was the first Sound Of Sirens recorded album.

True indeed, but a lot of that has to do with Dale considerably downsizing his kit post-BB as well as Pigs being recorded at Hook Studios.

As cool as the Sound Of Sirens ethos is, that board (and tracking room) doesn't have the juice that Hook and Westbeach Recorders added to albums like Pigs and ASA.

This one has been on repeat lately.
Would love to hear the OG/alt version of "Safety Third" that was a bonus track on the vinyl version, but this has proven pretty to be an elusive track to hunt down.  :(

Oh dang! Never knew about that version. Anyone heard it? Is it drastically different?
