I arrived late to the show last night, probably the boys went on at nine.  I got there around 9:15 PM to a packed house.  Melvins played mostly new(er) material - certainly heavier on the Melvins/Big Business songs.  Being less familiar with those songs I couldn't begin to post an accurate setlist.  The highlight of the ninety minute - or so - set for me was The Bit and the Wipers' Youth of America cover.  I didn't hear any songs older than these but hopefully some other attendee will be kind enough to post a full set list.

All in all the Melvins set was as finely crafted and tight fitting as I've come to expect from these men after something like fifteen years or more of watching them perform.  No real complaints.  I got my money's worth.  Maybe I could have done with some more of the older tunes but I guess that's a common grievance aired these days.  These professionals know what they are doing.

A note of interest - to me at least - the youths seem to particularly prefer the newer Melvins songs (Big Business material).  The call and response songs from the more recent album which was very militaristic seemed to go over very well with the crowd.  I noticed much hollering and other sorts of guttural approbation from the crowd over the newer songs.  A small but devoted group of older fans including myself were appreciative of Youth of America and The Bit.

The end of the show, after The Bit, saw Jared performing exceptional lead vocals for a  song unknown to myself.  His vocals reminded me of something Pink Floydish, of Meddle period perhaps.  After this Buzz departed the stage while Dale, Coady and Jared remained and built up an amazing explosion of noise.

There was talk of an after party Melvins show at another club with bands Tweak Bird, Boars and Skycrawler.  One of these bands featured members of the Butthole Surfers but alas, I was too tired to find out.  If that member of the Butthole Surfers was Paul Leary I will be kicking myself in the rear today for missing it.

The crowd did not, in my opinion, give this great band a very hearty round of applause.  Perhaps their minds were too blown.

My ears are still ringing guys.  Thanks.

Funny that Buzz never partakes in these improv end of gig jams.

Thanks for the review and welcome.

Yep, excellent, excellent show.  UNSANE ripped it up too.  I have to start using ear plugs.

By the way, there were Bulls n' Bees Letterpress editions there too-- # out of 150.  Also some GPTs numbered /53.

It was a great show.  Muumuu and all.  In no certain order: Dog Island, Youth of America (This really got everyone going), the new album in order, I presume a new forthcoming song (?), 2/3 of Lysol, Manky, History of Bad Men, The Bit to close.  Dale and Cody were tight!  Unsane were great.  Mohawk is a great venue.  Best $17 spent in a long time.

Set list (where there are gaps, I may be missing something)

Dog Island (opener)
Hung Bunny
Roman Bird Dog
Water Glass

Manky

History of Bad Men
Youth of America

A Growing Disgust

A War on Wisdom
We Are Doomed
Friends Before Larry
A Really Long Wait
National Hamster

The Bit (closer)

Also, I've posted a few shakey clips on Youtube from the show if anyone's interested. They're not the best; mostly short clips and a lot of hootin' and hollerin', but still something to watch.

King Coffee

Kolonel Kurtz Kobain

Dale played a Les Paul with Tweak Bird later that night. Paul Barker was at the Melvins show.
I'd rather be at Dodger Stadium...
