Thorogood gained his first mainstream exposure as a support act for The Rolling Stones during their 1981 U.S. tour. He also was the featured musical guest on Saturday Night Live (Season 8, Episode 2) on the October 2, 1982 broadcast. During this time, Thorogood and the Destroyers also became known for their rigorous touring schedule, including the "50/50" tour of 1980, on which the band toured 50 US states in the space of 50 days.[5] After two shows in Boulder, Colorado, Thorogood and his band flew to Hawaii for one show and then performed a show in Alaska on the following night. The next day the band flew to Washington State, met their roadies who had their Checker car and a truck, and continued a one show per state tour for all fifty states in exactly fifty nights. In addition, they played Washington, D.C. on the same day that they performed a show in Maryland.

soooo, unless the show in Hawaii is at 9am, how exactly is this gonna be a record?

Well now, that was a real ball buster to read. I thought it was all mapped out to a T - I guess I didn't realize that Thorogood hit Alaska+Hawaii back to back, and then Maryland and DC in the same day. What a total fucking badass.

I hope Melvins realize this and figure it out. A show at 9am isn't totally out of the question, is it?
I'd get out of bed early for that!!!!

Have fun at the show, dude.

quoted from wiki, which IS "editable", but I remember hearing about that tour when I was a lil' nardie (8/9 years old), he came to Fairbanks (my hometown, a C/D market at best, with Anchorage being a B market) a couple years later, based on his previous visit.

wiki did quote another source though for that info, so that may be the proverbial straw.

will have fun and do my best for your peoples, the manager of the Tooth (Mr. Fiacco) is looking into filming for me as I type...

I think I saw an interview where Melvins said Thorogood didn't complete his tour.

Also, I am pretty sure that Thorogood did not complete the tour as it doesnt seem to actually be in the record book.

Even if he did complete the tour it wouldn't be in the book or considered an official record breaker if he didn't register with Guinness prior to the tour and then have it verified by them.

I searched on google, and can't seem find any evidence that suggests Thorgood did not complete the tour. However, Melissa is right about having to register.

Here's the record for solo performer:

http://www.guinnessworldrecords.com/world-records/2000/fastest-to-play-a-concert-in-each-of-the-50-us-states

Yes, but this would be considered separate because it was a solo act. The official wording of the Melvins record attempt is "Fastest tour across the USA and Washington DC by a band."

Before the release of their next album, the Destroyers went through additional personnel changes. Saxophone player Hank Carter joined the band, and Smith left the group. In 1980, the group released More George Thorogood and the Destroyers. The popularity of Thorogood and his group had grown so much that they signed a major label record deal with EMI in 1981. Following a tour with the Rolling Stones, the Destroyers embarked on the now-famous 50/50 tour, one that took the group to 50 states in 50 days without a break. "It was a ludicrous venture," Joel Selvin wrote in the band's EMI biography," but it made a statement.... This wasn't show business. To George and the band, this was life." During that time, George Thorogood and the Destroyers refused to take time off even when they had it. They would frequently show up at local clubs on their nights off and play under the name Sidewalk Frank.

QUESTION:

is there a Melvins site like that besides this one?

http://www.themelvins.net/wiki/index...ins_Tour_Dates

------------------------------------
2 other things...

1. regardless of whether or not it's in Guinness, it did happen, I've never heard in 20+ years of being a rock music fan the tour being cut short, and if it were, there'd be multiple sources

2. The Melvins tour is 51 days long, which is a day longer than the above documented 50/50 tour

ballsdeep

and of course, the above is proving the wiki article incorrect (Colorado > Hawaii > Alaska > rest of the states) , but I'm guessing with George being a baseball fan he was being interviewed about a tour that was 26 years previous...

Captain CoryCory

One thing that'll be entertaining for sure is if the Melvins complete the tour AND get in the record books will there be an ensuing tirade from George Thorogood?

For sure. I think Walsby needs to draw a VS picture. If he doesn't, I will  :D

If I'm reading this right - and he did indeeeed complete the tour - he's actually got them beat for completing Maryland and DC on the same day, no? In addition to that, he also played a show the very next day in Richmond, Virginia. Despite my lacking in math skills, I'm calculating 51 gigs in 50 days. Right? Right. Once again, it's not official in the books, so Melvins still win. Go Melvins, go!!!

Very excited to hear from those of you attending the kick-off tonight!!!

DC

If any of you ass clowns show up to CO, don't be a fucking fanboy. I'm bringing a date. Maybe.

Also, if you haven't already, this interview is worth checking out. it's kinda funny to hear what Buzz has to say about it:
