It was a good show.  I have to say, I was expecting SOMETHING different, as it was a NYE show that cost $60 (free champagne?  guest musicians?) but other than bringing out a former member for a song in the Redd Kross set, it was pretty much business as usual for both Melvins and Redd Kross.  Luckily, business as usual is stellar from both these bands.

It was warm and quiet on the streets of Los Angeles. That was the first thing that struck me as to why it didn't feel like New Year's Eve. Hardly any people walking around (and we were in the heart of downtown) and long-sleeve shirt weather. (6.30pm in any city in the UK on New Year's Eve and the streets will already be awash with vomit as barely-dressed young men and women throw bottles against the freezing rain in an attempt to be arrested before midnight).

Arrived at the venue - an apartment block next to a hotel - at around 5.30pm, said hi to Buzz who was standing in the doorway chatting and sat next door in a Mexican restaurant waiting for someone I recognised to walk past. I didn't have to wait long. In to my second bottle of beer I spy Idlehanz and Scott Big Business march past and follow them into the venue, long before the start time.

Haze had set up the merch table by then and he kindly let me spend obscene amounts on him on behalf of some of his Boredies and I. I managed to short-change him by $10 (unintentionally, ahem) but he has the eyes of a kestrel and accused me, and Limeys in general, of being scroungers and thieves. How astute!  :D

I stood in line listening to the Melvins soundcheck and spoke to a fabulously friendly photographer from New York for half an hour as we waited to get in. Everyone was dressed up and it looked like I was in a birthday party for Cosmopolitan or something. I made an effort and wore black socks.

They'd promised us the King Eddie Ballroom but I think we had to see the gig in an annexe. The proper place had had a power failure I was told, and so we had to make do with 2/3-scale chandeliers and a trestle table with bottles of beer. It didn't really matter, though, because of who was there:  Dan Raymond, Mackie, drummer from The Germs, Yanayaya, Andy Coronado and Haze of course.

Melvins came on first and played more or less the same set from San Francisco two days previous, minus Hung Bunny/Roman Dog Bird. Lasted around an hour. It was very dark, making it really difficult to film, but Dale gave it hell which seemed to light the place up by itself. It was difficult to take anything seriously as Jared was wearing an all-white suit (and white shoes) with a home-made bath towel turban (in the Sikh style) which he was trying to keep on top of his head all the set. He failed. During AMAZON. I'll never be able to take that song seriously again!

It was a shame they played first, imo. In fact, it was a shame they stopped at all, to be honest. They're one of those bands who should just play til the sun comes up.

Highlight: Youth of America. It went on and on, just like it should!

Oh yeah, just remembered: when they finished, they all left the stage leaving Jared to come to his mike and bellow the countdown to New Year's Eve even though it was only about 1045  :lol:

It went like this: HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERBODY! - 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 5, 5, 5, 5, 5, 5, 5, 5, 5, 5, 5.............

Nice review, thanks Jules. Have you've seen Red Kross as well? and did you end up seeing Neil Hamburger? :P

Didn't see Redd Kross but did make it to Neil Hamburger. He wasn't on for very long but he was bloody funny  :D
