I always thought they were a big rip-off of L.A. Punk until I heard OZMA!!  I have been a hard, and fast fan ever since!!  Gluey Porch Treatments is also one of my favorites.  It's so good in fact, that it has been bootlegged and re-released in huge quantity.  The boot is so good, that it's hard to differentiate the two.  The original reads "Made in France" in the bottom right corner on the back cover.  Also on the label.

Vive le Rawk!!

Just curious about what would have you thinking they were a rip-off of L.A. Punk (unless that's the name of a band I've never heard of) until you heard Ozma. What had you heard before Ozma?

Some singles.  Probably.  There were a few things out there.  I don't think I heard Gluey Porch Treatments until I started going backwards from OZMA.  Most of their earliest stuff was pretty derivative...

They played easy as it was on the stoner witch tour and
snake appeal on the 2x4 tour.

I guess people hear what they hear, but what exactly do you mean by derivative LA Punk? Are we talking Germs? Black Flag? The very earliest stuff, which did not receive wide release until the 2000's sounds musically a lot more like Void or early Poison Idea. Once they started slowing down I would say that some Black Flag was definitely an influence, but they grooved a bit more like Flipper, who were from SF, and also sounded a lot like some of the slower Necros stuff. Without a doubt GPT was when Melvins fully made their own sound, but they were certainly their own hybrid when they still a hardcore band.

I am really not in a position to analyze this.  I stopped listening to Punk per se, around '78.  It all sounded the same to me by then.  Just boring.  I never was interested in Grundge either.  How Melvins broke though, I'm really not certain. I just know that when I heard OZMA, I was blown away.  A friend gave me a promo copy of this LP, and shortly after I saw them live twice.  I also spin records at parties and always get interesting reactions whenever I put down some Melvins.  Recently I asked Buzz and Dale to sign OZMA for me.  When I got home, I realized that it was my other copy.  Not the promo.  How I missed this, I don't know.  The promo has a cut corner and some asshole peeled off the sticker on the back, damaging the jacket.

oh, yeah, Like Consider GPT a punk or Grunge album, hmm. NOT!

Its Crossover man.

and another thing, The only time I wanna hear Melvins Play GPT LIVE in this day and age is like, never.

unless its like a LIVE 10 hour Version of Leech that is Just more punishingly slower and inhumanly drop-tuned loud enough to cause anal leakage and nosebleeds. One that just never ends at the end, with like two drummers continuously pounding out the sickness of the verse line forever and ever untill the Devil weeps out of boredom, and then It just keeps going and going...and then stops...then KEEEPPPsSSSFUCKING GOING!!! INYOURFACE---PICKLEDICK!

Other than that, go home, just forget it.

Uncle Fester

I would love to hear the title track maybe extended a bit because its SO thrashy and heavy but so short... always makes you wish the song could keep going.

Ahhh yes, the title track is a nice song. Most of the song is in 5/4, but you don't really notice it unless you're counting, cause it's pretty up tempo. There's a lot of nice slow sludgy stuff on the gluey album, but also quite a bit of faster thrashy punky stuff too  :)
