I've always wondered that.  The thing about this article, though.. is that he's not necessarily putting anyone down out of meanness, rather, he's making a couple of really good points.

I gave up on the Melvins 20 years ago, when I spent money to see them play. The first song was a 12 minute guitar wank peppered with the occasional drum strike. When the second song was just a variation on the same theme, I walked out. Friends of mine, who are big Melvins fans, have told me the band did this when they felt the crowd was full of posers.
I'd actually liked a number of the Melvins songs that I had heard before
attending their show, but I can't support a band that feels it's OK to piss on people who paid to see and support them.
I find it humorous that Buzz talks down bands that play arena for being greedy and disconnected with their audience, when that is how I have viewed the Melvins since my one time seeing them.

I like how people are still talking about sets they played opening for bands in the 90's, and the idea that if they played "real" songs or something it would win over fans of, say, White Zombie or Nine Inch Nails. I also like how they still cause some people to respond with utter hatred towards them and saying the generic "they suck!" I mean, there's bands out there I don't like at all, but I don't really feel the urge to find articles or interviews with them and comment on their suckiness, which makes me wonder about the people that do.

Oh and I agree with Buzz on pretty much everything except I was never really into the Replacements, but that's mainly because I never really gave them a listen, and I could never afford to see the Stones live to judge whether or not they did indeed blow it.

But as far as post-rock goes? Mogwai, MONO, Slint and The Rachel's are all I'm willing to enjoy.

I have pretty much the same opinion as you do about this stuff, I never got into Birthday Party. Just awful.
