Got back a little while ago. What a great show! I believe this was the last date on the current tour, unless you count the birthday bash coming up at Grumpy's on Tuesday. Anyways, like my friend Ben and I feared the 10" was long sold out by the time we got there. I did chat a little bit with Haze then grabbed a beer and checked out the opening act, which was called Mutts who were pretty good. It was actually only their piano player performing, for whatever reason the bass player and drummer weren't there, not sure if they couldn't make it or if they just wanted to keep it more of an intimate type of thing. The guy Mike was great though on just electric piano and bass drum, he had a real Tom Waits thing going on with a touch of Randy Newman thrown in. He did a cover of Royals that was pretty funny, and also gave away copies of one of their CDs that I think were leftovers from SXSW; I'm listening to it right now and it's good stuff but very different with the full band.

So after a short bit Buzz came out and set his minimal gear up and started playing. Ben spotted on the set list that Buzz would start with Boris, which I thought he was kidding about, but sure enough he played it alright! We were right up front and it was a nice intimate show with Buzz telling the stories he's told all tour, along with some good bits about being unsure if he'll make it to his 50th birthday as any moment someone could walk in with a deer rifle and take him out. He then mentioned that someone dragged him to see Bruce Springsteen and that he wished at that moment he had a deer rifle to take out the Boss, but that he couldn't get away with it and quoting Bukowski about prisons have the wrong type of bars. I also asked about the lack of muumuus and he said something along the lines of he's too grown up for that type of thing which made everyone laugh. The music itself was great and sounded fantastic at High Noon. I think he only played two new songs, the previously streaming Dark Brown Teeth and a new track I don't know the name of, the rest of the set was Melvins songs and a cover of Ballad of Dwight Frye. It was a pretty short set even with the stories but hey I got a free CD and got home before midnight, so win! So yeah, if he does tour later this year you should totally go. I really like hearing Melvins songs in different contexts like that, and when it was just Buzz and Dale, and with Trevor on stand up bass.
Hail, not fail.
PS:  fuck him.

He's wearing them on the inside for the solo shows. Don't worry.
