I can understand a critique, have had many in my day and it's never easy to swallow when someone is shit talking something that came from your innards. Unless you're Pablo fucking Picasso (the great chameleon of the 20th Century) I feel many great artists have repetitive styles, color schemes and overall themes.

I don't think anyone was shit talking here ... offering an opinion ... perhaps even critique ... both those aren't quite shit talking though. And for such an accomplished and imposing figure I'm sure Haze can shrug off opinion and critique easily enough ... shit talking may be a little harder to shake off ... but still I think Haze wouldn't have much problems there either.

I agree that most artists operate from within a style, motif, themes that become synonymous and identifying ... take Kozik for example; and I can also see the theory behind having a unified look both say as an artist's calling card or even a brand (recent AM Rep releases) ... not to mention to a series of releases (as the recent run of Melvins stuff) ... and truth be told while I'm not over the moon 'bout every example/release (be they Melvins or other AM Rep releases) I will say that in this latest style Haze has come up with some of my favorite Melvins covers ever (not to mention some other really boss AM Rep releases).

You can spot a Haze from a mile away, and would never mistake it with any other persons work. In my opinion, that is winning.

Indeed this style/approach has become an identifiable calling card for both Haze and AM Rep. And while it has no doubt become definitive in this way; it certainly has it's influences and tips it's hat it seems ... I've always thought this latest aesthetic holds strong similarities and reference to the work of Aidan Hughes (KMFDM artist) most particularly to his defining and stellar work on his 1980's pulp magazine Brute! Very similar looks, colours, themes, and motifs between Hughes' Brute! pieces and Haze's newest roll of works.

You can take that shit talk fragment I used there as a grain of salt. I have the ability to appreciate all art, as well as your opinions.

Nice call on the influences, we all have them. A good artists steals, a bad artist copies. In this case, I'm usually most impressed by the awesome process involved with the printing.

Now if you gentleman don't mind excusing me, I have an 11:15 appointment inside of Tom's butthole and I don't want to be late. Rev Mike has been blessed with getting sloppy seconds right after.

Hey everybody, let's break it down and get real for a minute. I have mocked a lazy criticism. Sure, you're sick of Haze's art, you may not even like all of Melvins' music, and you wanna talk about it, great. That doesn't stop anyone from responding to you. Melvins have 3 primary visual artists at this point: Mackie, Haze, and Buzz. I don't love everything, I don't even like every piece of music that is produced. The thing is though, Buzz thinks about this shit, and he approves it. This is what is presented and there is a lot of time and effort put into it. The process and the presentation is not lazy. So why should your criticism be? And if it is, then maybe someone might comment on that. As far as the band using other artists, they have. The Freak Puke Pic discs, the hammerhead split pic discs, and Mackie still does the majority of the art for the non-boutique releases. And it's not as simple as letting another artist in to try their hand. There are payments and timelines and approval. Look at the clusterfuck the live 12 inches have been when relying on other artists for their end of the deal. Do you think Buzz is lazily saying, "Hey Tom, whip up some more bullshit for this thing so we can make more money." No, he cares about the product, and he trusts Haze and has input on how this all will be presented. As he has said many times, he thinks about all of this a lot more that any of us do. So you don't like it and you wanna talk about it, great, put some thought into it. Maybe someone disagrees or tells you to go home, or lumps you in with all the other folks who say this sucks and that sucks, and I don't like this, and they should do this. You want a vibrant online community, put some thought into it. Or not. It's the internet, someone is gonna call you a name or something anyway.

Haze is very aware of what he draws from, whether it be Russian/Baltic proganda, early 20th century pulp, silver age comics, and whatever else. He is on a continuum and he knows it. Judy spoke very well to how artists develop motfis and themes. They have periods. And the stuff Haze does know is nothing like what he was doing in the 80's and 90's amrep heyday.

While I certainly agree with and champion a lot of your points here for sure ...

That doesn't stop anyone from responding to you.

Indeed it does not ... in fact it invites it ...

And there is a no doubt a difference between "responding" to someone's post and deleting it ...

Your reading of the original critique is exactly that ... yours. Was it a lazy critique? Perhaps. Though perhaps others felt it spot on and verbose in it brevity ... opinions & assholes, right?

Perhaps some others might think deleting a members' post a particularly "lazy" manner in which to "respond"  to a difference of opinion ... especially from one who speaks on how to achieve a "vibrant online community" by simply putting "some thought into it".

Then again, right in your opening you said your intent was not really response, comment, nor discussion but rather simple, reactive, thoughtless mockery ...

Just breaking down an opposing point of view here ... ya know, getting real for a minute and putting some thought into it.

Rev. Mike

Exactly. I don't give a fuck about a vibrant online community, but the reactions that people are having about not being able to have any opinion that is not fawning or complimetary seems to imply that is what people expect. I don't believe this forum has ever promised anyone anything though.

Opinions are opinions, and whether they are thoughful or lazy, someone is still gonna question your sexuality or frequency of sexual relations. If someone doesn't like my mocking response now or in a thread from 3 years ago, then take some real action.

I cannot speak to the deleting as I have nothing to do with it.

What the hell are you talking about? Are you drunk?

Reading this in addendum to you last response/explanation/lecture is confusing at best and laughable at worst man ... hahaha!! backtrack much?

You spend much of your first attempt at putting some thought into (it being defending your and someone else's lazy reactions/responses) by lecturing on others' lazy responses, on putting some thought into it, and the how to's of a vibrant online community ...

Then when someone calls you on the obvious swiss cheese like holes snaking all through your argument/defense you say something; what I donno? It was all garbled ... with your foot in your mouth an all like it is.

If you don't give a fuck; why did you act like you do ... and more importantly why should anyone else?

actually I was promised some nachos w/ extra sour creme.

Rev. Mike

I have not been drunk in 6 years.

I think my point is quite clear. Someone stated they disliked something having to do with Melvins. I posted a snarky comment. They talked about me getting my panties in a bunch and linked to a thread where they believed I did the same thing 3 years ago. There was talk of me being in the cool clique or something. Many people stated that they do not feel they can say anything about Melvins that is not fawning or complimentary. This seems to belie an expectation that this is a robust community where all discourse is tolerated and no critique is mocked. This led to my assumption that some want a vibrant online community (which I don't care about or believe exists). I made a few more snarky posts.

Then I took the ill advised position of trying to genuinely explain where I was coming from in regards to my snarkiness in the face of lazy criticism. As well as delineating my insight into why and how Melvins do what they do in regards to art and packaging. I get very tired of the whole "I don't like this and I know better, and they should do it like this..." type of comment. And now I am continuing it. We all have shitty opinions and they will all be piled on top of each other, and occasionaly there is a power that be that will delete some of them. My point has been very consistent.

Make your own nachos.

It's unfortunate that these differences of opinion, debates and skirmishes result in another person leaving. Some times i wonder if this board is actually a survival game to see who will be the last person standing!

more than unfortunate,i think it's stupid..to delete your profile due to such things.i can't believe people take internet so seriously. just my opinion
