Are the Melvins the second most influential band to heavy metal besides Sabbath?

Obviously, Black Sabbath is the most influential metal band of all time, but would you consider Melvins the second most influential? They are responsible for creating/inspiring several genres, so I don't see why not.

Sure. Why not?

*Led Zeppelin influences people who won't even listen to Sabbath.

For the most part I'd say bands like Sabbath, Slayer, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Venom, yaddayadda are the most influential metal bands of all time.

Melvins are just Melvins and I don't see them fitting in with that generic type of sub-genre.

But that's just like, my opinion, man.

I'd say they are very influential, it's not always obvious, but ever since the inception of the Melv, they've left their stain across the metal.
Rheopectic? Yes!!!

Think we got a match!  :-s

Yes, yes. Ding, ding, ding. Metallica is influential. I just didn't want to be the one to say it out loud.

Melvins are of course influential, too. A great deal of NOLA bands in particular bow their heads to the true king as do many others.

Good thread.

In theory bands like Tales of Terror, Wipers, Flipper, Black Flag and many other key bands got their first in terms of sound (these bands sound more similar to Melvins than Sabbath does to Melvins) and one can even trace their own inspirations, so where do you stop? Ventures? But...that is only "influential" in the definition of sound and sound only. Melvins just took those bands and turned the dial up on many of these previous bands to 11 and opened up a whole new realm to what is possible.

Then there is another sort of influential. Melvins can be considered most influential in the fact that they are ultimately responsible for Nirvana and thus that whole movement, which is far more influential than Melvins as a band for the general public and modern guitar based music in general.

Finally, there is a third definition of "influential" aspect to the Melvins. No band can touch the Melvins in terms of staying relative for three decades, they are peerless - no questions. No band has ever come close to their career, massive back catalogue and risks they have taken with such very few dud songs to show for (there are no dud Melvins albums...maybe Chicken Switch ) and the fact they never bow down to anyone  - so with that in mind, they are influential in a third way. To me, this is the most influential they have been for myself and my own life - it is important to be your own man and Melvins are a staple of that example and one I try and live by and not be afraid to worry about what others think of you. Maston frequently mentions how Melvins just make whatever they want and how Maston want to be the same band in that way and I'm sure many other bands think the same way like Boris etc..

Who is Back Slabbath? Marilyn Manson, Black Veil Brides, Blood On The Dancefloor, Avenged Sevenfold, Linkin Park, Limp Bizkit, Asking Alexandria, etc. are the only metal bands that are good. Now leave me alone mom, I'm gonna go cry and straighten my hair
My favorite thing about Melvins is the goofy personality | These guys suck and Buzz is a pretentious hipster dork | This sounds nothing like Metallica. | Dales Dad was a drum, its in his blood. | King Buzzo's hair probably holds a lotta secrets | what the fuck is a stee? | Melvins as a way of life

I already miss Goat of the Night. What do I have to sacrifice to get him back here?  :o

Really? I missed this, but that's a bummer. I always thought zumi was better than that. That's the worst kind of tattoo artist right there. I'm quite disappointed by this.
