Melvins hit the stage about 9:15pm. Same exact set as NYE, BUT with the Melvins sounding PROPERLY LOUD. You know that type of volume and fullness you get from a theater's PA system versus a small clubs sound. The band was on FIRE! Sleep were loud and fucking sloppy as Hell. Why they would dare follow the Melvins I will never know. I used to love Sleep back when I bought Volume One and Holy Mountain back in the early nineties. Those records and songs were great. But live, I am not sure if they know that when you go to band practice, at some point, you need to put down the bong and pick up your axe. Left maybe halfway through their set.

Earlier that day I saw Queen with Adam Lambert play on the Late Late Show with James Corden. I was in the audience a few good friends of mine play in the Late Late Show band. I can say this without any reservation - ADAM LAMBERT SLAYED SLEEP.

mmmh, ineteresting review. it's funny Melvins had half of the amps on stage but they can still play a heavy set...honestly not so easy to play after Melvins

A guy I know who's a real gear head went and said they just used the house p.a. differently.

i can see that, Melvins have a different approach to music than Sleep. i think the more they get old the less they care about gear on stage. been reading an interview with Dale saying during the Mark D era they alwas wanted the maximum on stage, speaking of cabs and gear and drum kit. now they know what they need..the essential!

does anyone know why Dale was so pissed at the end of Melvins set, smashing his kit? annoying crowd?

Did that happen the next night? I would think if he did that, he did it for Rock and Roll.

I've seen The Melvins countless times over the years and Buzz's guitar tone keeps getting weaker and weaker.  I really miss that heavy, low end Gibson sound through multiple tube amps.  Big and warm and fuzzy.  The EGC through solid state just don't even compete.  Sounds like a squawk box to me.  Oh well.  I was at this show and they were great.  Sounded better than last time I saw them, at the Troubadour with Napalm Death.  They sounded horrible at that show.  Buzz's guitar was soooooooo weak.

Buzz has played solid state amps since the beginning of the band.  There never was a multiple tube amp rig, other than the occasional backline/rented Marshall jcm 800/900.

This is correct - pretty much always through his Sunn Beta head since the waaaaayyyy back. The ECG has a different tonal quality than the Les Paul. A lot of that has to do with the aluminum neck. I have played an ECG guitar and really did not like how the neck feels (Buzz loves how the neck feels) and was not into the nasal tone out of the guitar. But who am I to question Buzz, he knows what he is doing. I do like the sound of the Les Paul live better than the ECG, but fuck it!

Very surprised at the first post that Sleep were not so good. I saw them last in June '16, and they killed it, absolutely tight. That was my first Sleep show. I didn't t toke up that night, nor was I inebriated, just a few brews since I had a four hour drive home.
I wonder if Henry Rollins was at either of these shows, since he's a huge fan of both bands. Would love to read his review if he was.
