"PAUL The first song that we wrote specifically for Far Beyond Driven was "25 Years." That set the tone for everything and they just kept coming after that.

ANSELMO I turned the band on to the Melvins second record Ozma and I didn't expect them to like it much because it was very obscure and strange sounding. But right away Vinnie Paul spoke up and said, "Man, that's a pretty awesome drum sound." Not that "25 Years" is stylistically close to the Melvins, but it was kind of Pantera's take on what the Melvins were doing at the time. That was the magic of Pantera: We could digest different elements of heavy metal and aggressive music, and when we would regurgitate it back up, it would come out as something fresh."

Despite his drunken antics, I always liked Phil. Pantera were okay for the brand of metal they played, but I really dig Down and Superjoint. Not surprised by this at all.

Shudder To Think were listening to Ozma a lot too. But their music didn't suck!

When Pantera played here in Adelaide in the late 90's Anselmo asked one of my brother's friends where he could score some heroin.

Isn`t that the way it shouldn`t be, listening to others records to get ideas and to try so semi copy it in a way? Melvins would never do it that way although they like to do covers.

he no lie.    "pretty awesome" puts the drum sound on Ozma mildly.

I know this is a Melvins fred and not a Pantera fred but Vinnie Paul's drum sound with Pantera to this day is the still the best sonically I've ever heard they were like mini sonic booms.

I dig your angle.  but at the same time there was always a mechanical almost robotic sound to VP's drums.   it lacks the personality of Dale on Ozma.    it's almost sterile.   while Dale on Ozma is downright filthy.

I liked Pantera. They did their own thing and helped break down the doors for people looking for music outside the mainstream which was much harder pre internet. FBD is still an intense album, fun to listen to every few years.

Phil has problems but I like he respects and listens to everyone from Kool Keith to Nick Cave to Buzz like this. That's what music is all about.

With all due respect, Pantera's drum sound is the absolute worst ever. The bass drums sound like someone clicking their tongue into the mic, trying to imitate the gallop of a horse. The influence of that sound, and "...And Justice For All", has made most "modern" rock sound utterly oxygen-deprived. Dry, precise, lifeless as shedded skin. It's like listening to an instruction manual.

Again, with all due respect...
