Listened to it again today.
Except "My War", the other songs were such a disapointment!
And it sounds so flaaaaat!

Have to listen again, but I found it grey and somehow tasteless today.
Maybe I got COVID and can't smell anything, ahah!
Then I listened to "Radio One" by the Jimi Hendrix Experience and then "American Caesar" from Iggy, it was so much alive!

))))((((

You make a good point there i must say. Considering the band say they record after only just getting a handle on the songs, they don't sound so fresh and vital as one might think they would. Perhaps it's time to give someone other than Toshi a try. Personally i'd like to hear someone like Albini recording them.

Well the band himself seems to know what they're doing. Soooo... is Toshi responsible for their sound? Not only!
If they're OK with that kind of sound, you can't really blame Toshi.
That's what is difficult when you're recording: you have to choose a sound. You can make it sound so different depends on what numerous options you decide to follow!

That is true. I know i do tend to sort of hang those dynamics upon Toshi but you are right it's not HIM in the driving seat so to speak. I think for myself i'd just like to see what the band would sound like with someone different. Who knows, maybe i would like that less, but i do think it would be at least interesting to hear.

I must say though that  HAT sounded totally great, and Toshi was the engineer..

...but Merzbow and then Lustmord were kind of "sound designers", did they?

Yep, but the album was recorded by Toshi i guess, i think they mixed some parts by Lustmord while the band was recorded by Toshi. btw, i noticed the drums (guitar too) had a  better sound on those albums. Then drums started being a bit buried in the mix, with that "flat" feeling you mentioned. i have the same feeling with Dale's solo album which in my opinion would have been alot better with a different production

Yep, Drums are matt nowadays.

And then... you have the songs. Have noticed that a part sounds a lot like "Brass Cupcake"... No big deal. I really have to listen again and try to get that negative feeling away.

I'm not worrying, there are some recent songs that are still really great, like "Don't forget to breathe" that could be real genius... with a larger sound, ahahah!
And I really loved "A walk with love and death  - DEATH" album ("LOVE" is cool too, but depends on the mood).
Whatever, I'm off-topic.

Edit: been listening to the Dale solo album after a while and must say i was wrong, the sound is very natural, perfect for the vibe of the songs.. i like the production on that one  :)

agreed, AWWLAD was a really good album/project... cannot wait for Buzz to write another proper album instead of short EP's. looking forward to the new Dale album too, the guy will not disappoint

Buzz synths are among the few that I think are good. Tres Cabrones and AMAZON come to mind first.

More synths, more handclaps, more everything Melvins!
What a fabulous room. Are all these your guitars?
