Quote from: brucewho's got the trilogy on vinyl besides me?  oh yeah,  mark me down for the bootlicker,  the piano song after prig is over clinches it for me.  such a nice almost ballad song from the MELVINS. excellent.

that's acoustic guitar.
and drums. and singing. and piano.

that's a sweet little number

The Maggot is overrated. It's an okay release in general terms but it's still the Melvins on autopilot.

The Bootlicker gets old pretty fast - great before the extreme dullness of most of it gets too much to bear.

The Crybaby, even though it'd got some crud on there (the Thirlwell track and Patton's GIJoe come instantly to mind here) is the most interesting to me...so I'm one of the two people who voted for it. Go Crybaby. Er, yeah.

I couldn't agree less. The Maggot is the heaviest MELVENS album and one of my absolute favorites. I can't imagine why annyone would think they were "on autopilot."

I think The Bootlicker is pretty great too. I don't find any of it at all dull.

Bootlicker is the most powerful of the three in an understated, sedated way.

Your thoughts?

Dreambox

I like putting them all in my CD player and putting it on shuffle.  Then you get the world's greatest Melvins album, sort of like their "White Album".  There were a couple tunes on "The Crybaby" that I didn't like that much, but mixed up with the other two it's pretty interesting.

I love how the Melvins take chances and don't care about being misunderstood.  The greatest bands have always had the same kind of attitude.

Crybaby's shit and the Maggot's never fully clicked with me in the same way as Bullhead or Houdini with me...so, yeah, Bootlicker it is because it's the Melvins easy listening record.

Anyone who doesn't like any of the trilogy CDs should be banned from the board, concerts and should be forced to burn all their merchandise.

Huey P. Newton

I like the Maggot the best, but the Bootlicker comes in second, so I pretty much am like the rest of the board.

Bootlicker is my favorite. I kind of came into the "melvins world" oddly in that the bootlicker was the first melvins CD i bought! I had heard great things about the band and bought it on blind faith. I thought it was amazing and i figured thats how all of their stuff was. Imagine how surprised i was after buying my second cd of theirs, Houdini.   The best thing about Bootlicker is the lyrics. The second part of Let it All Be is simply perfect. The bass playing throughout the album is also great.

Bootlicker is insanely good. It is one solid album, better than the others. I've been listenin to all of them together for a while and this one calls me back the most.

Yeah the Bootlicker is all about Bass. I love how mellow Let it all be is and how heavy it is live. I don't think it's an easy listen at all. It's pretty eery. Maggot is one of their best ever i reckon. It's like they made heavy metal interesting again.

klump

the melvins made the maggot album after playing at ozzfest and seeing all these crappy "metal" bands...so therefor they decided to make a giant slab of evil REAL HEAVY METAL.

and thats what they did :)

but i think its a really good record even though its the least nuanced.

I like all the melvins` records... hard to be picky...

I like what the Bootliker does. It's an interesting album, and I listen to it a lot. But the Maggot is way more listenable to these ears. I just love it's power and excessive riffing. The song structures are just as genius on Maggot as they are on Bootlicker, imo. But I don't think tinkering with ideas in metal riffing in general is as respected by some around here as the musical turn the Melvins took on Bootlicker.

the bloat

The Bootlicker gets dull (to me) sometime around 'We We' and then resparks my interest at 'Jew Boy Flower Head'. I honestly think that "Let It All Be' is one of the best Melvins songs ever laid on these ears.
I would say I listen to both disks equally depending on my mood, but ultimately, I tip my hat to the Bootlicker.
Imagine if they had merged the Maggot and Bootlicker into one and took out some of the fluff. Why, they would have the best disk ever to be called "the Maggotlicker".

ahaahahah "Maggotlicker" that's glorious

I do find there is filler on The Maggot but for me, every track on the bootlicker stands out and I would miss anyone of them were they removed.
