Where & when did you first hear The Melvins?

BMG catalog, for me. Melvins were prob featured as a band that influenced Nirvana, so I ordered Houdini. I liked Honey Bucket, but as a dumbass 14 year old, didn't have patience for many of the songs. It gathered dust. I tried Stoner Witch next and that's the one that hooked me. Then Stag. And then I went and bought everything I could find.

The most exciting thing about being a Melvins fan back in the day, is that you would go to a record store and find a release you didn't know existed. The solo albums, 10 Songs, Prick... so many fucking releases!

Funny enough, in college, I took all my Melvins CDs into a record shop in Bellingham, WA called Cellophane Square and sold them all. I guess I needed beer money or something. A few years later, I bought HAT and decided that I loved the Melvins again. I proceeded to go back and buy everything I could find and then with the digital and file sharing upon us, snatched up every obscure song that I couldn't find in stores. The rest is history

pretty late to the game but for me it was circa 1998 junior in high school, when i first 'the bit' off Stag in my buddys car mind you the album was already two years at this point anyway i couldnt get enough of that main riff, and overall how raw the recording was by comparison with something like Tool's aenima; that was my jumping off point and i went backwards from there

it was a dark and stormy night... wait, no it wasn't... well could have been.

it's late 1989, and my bassist for my first real band throws on GPT, it was on after that. bassist is Karl from His Hero Is Gone. i can thank him for my obsession with Subhumans too.

I was exploring everything Steve Albini. Listening to his bands and looking at his recording projects. In late 2005 i stumbled on High On Fire and saw he had recorded their new record - Blessed Black Wings. I brought it from the store and on the front of the CD there was a sticker that said "for fans of Motorhead, Slayer, Melvins". I knew who the first two were but had never heard of Melvins. Immediately i thought "that's a strange bandname". I promptly looked at Allmusic.com and was surprised to see they had been around a while and had a decent number of albums to their name. Stoner Witch and The Bootlicker were two of the most highly rated ones so i took a chance on them. I very quickly brought a load more. I often wonder how much longer would it have took for me to discover them if there had been no sticker. Who knows maybe i STILL wouldn't have known the band yet!

So basically it was...

Nirvana --> Shellac --> High On Fire --> Melvins

I bought lysol at a record store back in who-knows-what-year after seeing their name in lots of fanzines.    it's the original pressing on CD with the "lysol" tag sharpied over. you can still hold it up to the light and see the "lysol" underneath.   it was a used copy.

never had I heard this level of pure ear torture.    10 minutes in and a freaking song hasn't even started yet.  just a God awful rumble.   then drums.  ok..  here's a song.  NOPE!  now the rumble has added pounding drums for another seems-like-eternity.    then finally it collapses into the nastiest of warped filthy riffs.   then this dude starts singing and it sounds like he's drugged out of his mind.  it was BEAUTIFUL.


next thing I know it's 30 years later and I'm talking to a bunch of weirdos about them on the internets every day.

97 mombius hibachi on this free comp that came with a music mag. I loved that song right away, but it took longer to click with honky.... Now it is my alltime favourite melvins album.

i blindly bought the "with yo' heart, not yo' hands" 7 inch at kim's in nyc.   the yellow one on sympathy for the record industry. i think the bright color caught my eye. it was on a whim. not sure if i'd ever heard of the band before that, but it sent me down the rabbit hole where i'm still lost today.  i still have that record somewhere.

Weird, the song is different - it repeats itself basically doubling the length. Not sure I like it. And the video kinda sux...
