Open your vinyl, all of it. Shrink wrap can warp records over time. Dust from the factory lives in there, jostling around. Records are meant to be played.

OK, I was not aware of the 2019 reissue. I see it is NOT a picture disc, but on colored vinyl, which is less favorable, but I will get it even though they are ugly colors. Thanks for informing me about this release, everyone.

Pic discs have had a reputation for sounding lousy for a long time. The only one I still have and listen to is Hex by Earth.

Yes, ipecac's vinyl has been sus ever since they first started releasing vinyl. I think Songs for the Deaf was the first one they released. My Fantomas box set sounds like shit, but HAT is glorious. I am also considering getting Nude With Boots from the bandcamp site.

HAT was the last analog tape album, I'm pretty sure.  Buzz said it in an interview decades ago and Toshi told me that himself through emails back in 03 or 04 when I was a young engineer eager to learn.  It was quite a while ago though so if you say it's common knowledge around here then I may be misremembering.

Old user rusty shackleford used to swear that HAT was recorded on an 8 track, theres an interview somewhere where buzz talks about it.
Shouldn't be hard to find out in person, with the upcoming tour starting soon.

If memory serves they didn't spend a lot on that record like only about 25K to record.

I would have thought the trilogy would have been all digital. Those were 98/99 and I was under the impression tape for bands in major recording studios had been superseded by digital around the late 80's. But I really don't know anything.

Used to talk about that a lot, during the 90's analog had been kinda perfected just as it was sort of being phased out...so some of the very best analog recordings were 90's recordings IMHO.

Would be interested to know more about how they recorded the trilogy and HAT.

Yeah, I think about that sometimes. California by Mr. Bungle was done on tape.

I'd sure as shit rather have a digital (CD) retail product of an album recorded on tape than a cassette tape of an album recorded digitally. Funny how that works.

Everything recorded before Nude with Boots was recorded on Tape. Everything recorded after A Senile Animal was recorded Digitally.

I always joked that Nude with boots was from a tape track sheet for 'Nano webers' ...They were wondering what does 'NwB' stand for? I dunno!? Nude with boots?!

Even Mike Oldfield put a question Mark in that box.

I forget if this is true but you reminded me.

I think maybe California was one of the very last 'all analog' mastering Jobs? Forget if I read that in an interview or not.

If there was such a thing as a perfectly recorded album, IMHO this might very well be close as can be.

Cutting from tape to lathe is still done.  The high quality lathes used are all 50+ years old and no one makes them anymore, along with the tape machines that require a preview head.  The transfer consoles I've always thought were so cool, even though they're smaller and less visually impressive compared to the big large format analog consoles.

If you're into that kind of stuff check out Paul Gold at Salt Mastering in nyc.  He's one of the best still doing it.  He built his own console and it's awesome.  If you see the new Dylan movie that's his room and desk standing in for the old Atlantic studio.

California is an engineering masterpiece, imo.

OK, so I finally got the funds to get this record, and I am really glad I did. It sounds perfect, much better than the CDs. I heard details on the vinyl I never heard before.

Hail Melvins!

Yeah different mastering Job for the Vinyl, it sounds a lot fatter.
