I'm reading "Dance of Days" and this is some of the book:

"The saddest fate befell Scream. The band recorded a strong new LP in Fall 1989, but had no label. They did , however, release a 45 on John Fox's DSI label. Moreover, the band was undermined by bassist Skeeter Thompson's increasingly serious cocaine use and ensuing erratic behavior. Thompson quit Scream while in Europe, and the band had to hurriedly recuit a replacement to finish the tour before limping back to Washington D.C. Another bassist defected during a U.S. tour, which the band continued with J. Robbins filling in.

After the tour, Robbins returned to Jawbox and Thompson resumed bass duties. Facing eviction from its house, Scream booked an impromptu tour to California and moved in with relatives, playing gigs up and down the coast. At a Santa Barbara show, Thompson hassled the promoter-who happened to be straight edge crusader Kent McClard- for cocaine as payment. Such incidents cast a pall over the once highly regarded band.

Then Thompson got a desperate call from his ex-girlfriend, who was living with a cocaine dealer and was lost on a crack binge. Worried that she was in danger, Thompson listened to a Bad Brains tape over and over for guidance, finally concluding that he must return home to help her. Scream was stranded on tour with no bassist for the third time in less than a year.

Dave Grohl waited for a time, but finally called Buzz Osborne of the Melvins for the number of a group that had seen Scream in San Francisco. Nirvana was a rising punk band whose members had been so impressed by Grohl's playing that they tried to recruit him. After talking to bassist Chris Novoselic, Grohl headed to Olympia, where he stayed on a tattered couch in the aparttment of singer-guitarist Kurt Cobain. With no rhythm section and no money to return home, the Stahl brothers stayed at their sister's house in L.A."

Written by Mark Andersen and Mark Jenkins, "Dance of Days" is a great book about two decades of punk in the nation's capitol. Lots of history on Ian McKaye, Bad Brains, Discord, Fugazi.

I will have to listen to Buzz's solo c/d when I get home.

well, michael azerrad's 'come as you are' tells that story litte different, but then again it claims skeeter quit scream due to problems with his girlfriend (no word about heroin at all):

dave called buzz. buzz suggested dave to call krist for a dummer job and gave dave krists number. buzz then called krist to 'warn' him that dave might call about it. then dave called krist. krist asked a few questions and made dave come up to join them.

note: I would have typed it all down word by word but my bro dosen't have the english version of the book

Actually nocturn did not mention some more fascinating facts from "Come as You Are" about Grohl's connection to Melvins. The most interesting is when Grohl, Cobain, Novoselic and Buzz got involved in a long, steamy and fairly nasty four-way. According to Dale, this apparently lasted for about 4 hours (wow! Buzz's got some incredible boner power). Dale also wanted to get involved, but decided to just watch them. He eventually got a sixpack, and began a long session of drunken masturbation and spooging on himself.

WOW you know you've reached the pinnicle of rock & roll stardom when people write internet posts about your drunken masterbatory sessions!
