hi, i have never been to a melvins show, i live in uk, bit scarce out here :(

plus i live up north...

however i see they have date in camden in london, for 24th feb?

its on aloud.com !?!?!?!!?

bit of a weird site for a melvins show....

anyhow...

im just wondering what melvins shows are generally like??

on one side i can imagine the crowd going crazy and jumping round to the beautiful drone of buzz's voice...

but i could also envisage people being mainly still, taking in the magic, and basically stood there with there gobs open after hearing the most amazing thing ever??

please someone shed some light :) :?:

at the single show that i've seen and various videos, it's generally a combination of the two scenarios.

the bloat

Here's how we do it Seattle brother:

5pm - I'm off of work, headed home. I've got HAT playing on the stereo or some shit like that. I swing by the store, pick up some beer and am "pre-funking" while trying to push down some dinner eventhough I am too excited to eat.

6 or 7pm - it's off to the Showbox. Stop at Pike Street Brewery. Three Kiltlifters. Buzzed.

8-9pm - get in the line that is wrapped all the way down first ave. and around the next block. Try not to make eye contact with "old school" buttrockers that think flannel and Candlebox T-shirts are still cool. I always end up getting in line behind a couple of long hairs discussing the magnitude of "....And Justice for All"

10pm (approx) - show begins. At first the Melvins take the stage slowly and many people in the crowd raise beers or fists in the air to greet them. There is a strange rumbling coming from the speakers and smoke, shadows and darkness seep from the stage. Dale sits down. Immediately the kick drum starts throbbing. The momentum has begun. Buzz has a snarl on his face and looks at the crowd as if he has a bad taste in his mouth absently fingering his guitar. There is always very little talk from Buzz or Dale. They come. They rock. They leave.
The rumbling, after three or four minutes, turns into something (last time I saw them, it was 'Let it All Be'). There is actually very little moshing or slamming around once the music starts. Mostly headbanging or gentle nodding. Almost everyone has a beer in their hand and many people have shit-eating grins on their faces because they are watching one the greatest bands of all time - THE FUCKING MELVINS!!! Everyone is watching them closely.
Even fast songs like Honeybucket or Mombius Hibachi rarely merit an all out slam fest. The fans here in Seattle (IMO) are somewhat subdued and respectful of eachother in that you almost never see some dipshit dumping beer on people's heads or trying to elbow people into submission.
The music is always very tight and high energy and they don't deviate too much from the album versions of the songs.

Here are some more things you will see at a Melvins show:
Buzz will be really sweaty.
Dale will be in his underwear.
Kevin will be gyrating during the music like he is possessed.
There is almost always someone there appearing as a guest.
You will get rocked!

NICE. That's what a Melvin's show in Seattle is like bro, exactly. Melvins fans are there for the music, not to kick each other's asses. The shit eating grin does not stop until the next day, when you go into a post Melvins depression for a few days, like your dog died or something. You start looking towards the next show and wearing out all your vinyl and CD's trying to figure out which one is the best.
"I actually checked to make sure I wasn't posting balls."  (IDLEHANZ)

".PS: please,  allow me to reitterate...  dale crover = super human " (GLEN)

"If the world is going to end on Saturday I might as well hold in my shit and save a few bucks on Shit-Paper." (GRIM)

ANACONDA:   All-around genuine motherfucker.

the latter half of this, about the post melvins depression is entirely true...i get so sad afterwards.  it is like the day after christmas[but worse!!] (or Chanukah for you chosen ones) when you realize that the moment of joy you've been looking forward to is absolutely oppositely as close in time as it was when it started.  it is a very simple phenomenon, but a very powerful one nonetheless.  interesting

Well here we go, a different perspective...the support slot! Manchester Academy 16th of July 2003.

8.05 Kaada finishes set. Throws glitter on audience. Beeyootiful. Kaada's stuff is loaded off and Tim Moss (wearing a giant viking helmet) and some other stooges set up the Melvins stuff. Hideous rumbling sound from PA starts off quiet and builds up to really really loud over the 15 mins it takes to set up.

8.20 Really horrible siren noise goes off. Strobe on top of Kevin's amp on. Kevin comes on stage and plays some slide bass really high up the neck along with the rumbling and the siren. Plays low notes and the lighting gantry rattles. King Buzzo visible just offstage cradling his guitar and swaying back and forward with his eyes shut. Weird. Kevin grinning maniacally right at the front of the stage as Dale sits down at the back. Buzzo literally runs across the stage to his amps and the noise turns into 'The Fool, The Meddling Idiot'

Meddling 'jock' idiots with their shirts off start chanting 'where's Mike Patton' over and over during the quieter bits. They jump around like crazy when Night Goat is played. Despite the fact that the Melvins are playing a rock n roll entertainment set with Revolve, The Bit etc most people are not into it. Me and a few other people who look a lot older than me are really into it though. Shiteating grins and joyous slow motion headbanging.

But then it's time for Tomahawk and they're gone again. Shite. The big muscly Patton fans got what they wanted. Whoop-de-doo.

I might write about the film show later if I can be bothered. That was mindblowing.
For your health!
