Stag. The Trilogy sound is horrible in my opinion. I think Lysol is the best example of how the drums should be recorded.

While I dig Lysol's low-end there's something nagging at me which I can't quite pin down.

i think it's the feeling that there's something missing.  i feel that way about lysol.  it's a good one, not one of my favorites, but it is just seriously lacking an element.  something about the higher end is just not there

i love the ozma mix hehe, it took me a while to get used to it but it grew on me. i love that sterile sound
the lysol mix kind of bothers me, i got some kickass speakers over here with lots of detail and when i sit in the area where the sound of the 2 speakers collide the bass is WAY too loud, if i go sit somewhere else it sounds excellent tho. lysol is awesome

all the lysol fans should check out teeth of lions rule the divine's album 'rampton' it has a very lysollish feel to it

you can hear the minutemen influence on ozma, and I think thats what they tried to do with the sound (tight clean and thin)

even Lorax thought the bass sounded too tinny.

the melvins has also later said that they dont like it that much anymore.

Honky does it for me. It sounds so massive... on the softer parts it sounds like i'm standing in some huge empty space with the music coming from miles away.

joe baressi is one of the best engineers around.  the sonic massiveness of stoner witch, stag, all of honky, and mark d's the silent treatment are his doing.  as well as many other great albums that i can't think of at the moment.  he says he prides himself on his guitar sounds, but the heaviness/weight of the drum tracks done on his watch are awesome (see the kick drum on the silent treatment, mainly borehole).  he sometimes uses a yamaha ns10m woofer as a microphone.  any of you recording buffs out there use this technique?

depends on what you mean by best production.  the production and mixing for the maggot is bad according to normal standards, but I like it for a few reasons.  it doesn't sound like anything else i've heard, and the low end seems to have a lot of midbass more than sub (at least that i can remember from playing it on my car stereo when i had a pair of subs).  I didn't like it at first, but I think that taste in production is just as subjective as taste in music. (except if you're talking about ozma, OZMA SOUNDS LIKE CRAP)

Stag has it all - big budget sheen, corrosive noise, muted smoothness all the way to general 4-track nastiness. Honky's cut from similar cloth but breathes very differently. POTRE's sonic palette makes the Melvins interesting again.

I think the closest Ozma will get to perfection is playing Ozma at the same time as the Colossus of Destiny and cutting out the bass on COD.  If they could rerecord the album with that in mind, I would jump out of a car in anticipation.
