I think he should go to his local music store and listen to the albums.
it's very individual which albums appeals to you.
if had first bought houdini or stoner witch, I wouldn't have became a melvins fan.
these 2 albums rots in my cd case for years. I found them not very exiting. I only listend to the trilogy. most to the maggot. then I bought hat, wich I found good too.
took years to realize the greatness of houdini and stoner witch

The order of my Melvins-buying was:

1. Stoner Witch (cos I loved Revolve so much)
2. Hostile Ambient Takeover (bought this in America Summer 2004, loved it)
3. Pigs Of The Roman Empire (cos it was the new one at the time)
4. Stag (cos The Bit and Capt. Pungent rock)
5. Lysol (cos it's fucking legendary)
6. Trilogy (ordered them all at once)
7. Houdini

But in many ways it doesn't really matter. Every album is different, and there's no real textbook 'gateway' Melvins album, everyone gets into them from different places and ends up liking the rest of the discography.

grungy grunge?

Hey who cuts your hair?

rhett E rock

i say H.A.T. is the most accessable.  the Anti-Vermin Seed has to be one of my favorite songs...

but like everybody said Stag, Stoner Witch, Houdini...nobody said Eggnog.  maybe because it's an EP?  i think that record is fucking brutal.

Stag is one of their best albums, it was their third Atlantic release, and I'd say get it definitely, but it has been out of print for about 5 years at least.

Stag is NOT out of print. I don't know how many times it has to be said.

Anybody want Stag? I could order a box of 100 from my record store if I wanted.

As some of the guys mentioned, Stag, houdini, and stoner witch are good albums to start with (even though stag and houdini are 2 of my least fav melvins albums - I mean I still like them alot but don't think they are as good as some of the other stuff). while almost every melvins album is different in sound, ideas, vibes etc. , these 3 are probably the most user friendly ones...

I bought my first melvins album about 10-11 years ago and it was Ozma / Gluey porch treatments. hated it at first (which happens with a lot of melvins stuff) but couldn't stop listening to it for about 8 months straight afterwards.

I'm a drummer and I guess I listen to music from a "drum perspective", but ozma/gpt, bullhead, H.A.T are probably my favs. if u can afford to buy 2 cds go for 2 different album styles, like maybe bullhead and H.A.T, or lysol and stag...
Why say no to drugs when you can say yes?
