Fair point! I think part of it is tape saturation on any camcorder of its time (warmer and more overdriven than digital) as well as, in the case of Melvins, a much larger backline and bigger drums than they play today. They spent their first advance from Atlantic on the friggin 4 Hiwatt cabs and 3 SVTs in this video.

Absolutely ridiculous setup - they sound like 5 people at times

yeah, that's right. remember reading an interview, can't remember if was Buzz or Dale, where they said that during the Atlantic years they could pick a huge backline, something that wasn't even necessary, looking back at it after so many years of touring. besides that though, I noticed shows were way louder than nowadays. I must add also that Dale had a different sound live, with more effects (reverb especially) on his kit. Buzz rig was different too. imo he had a better live sound than during recent years

one of the most "Melvins sounding" songs of recent years
It's funny, but since hearing the live version, after the initial start of the song, i keep expecting the AMAZAON riff to kick in! They are very similar.

To me, it sounds like the unholy tribal child of AMAZON and Bloated Pope.
