anaconda once said something among the lines of: "if you are able to keep up with Buzz and Dale on GPT, you can't be a very bad bass player", always liked that line.
just because you are able to play songs written by another artist doesnt necessarily mean you are a good bass player. I feel it is what you contribute as a creative musician, thats what i think makes a good bass player or guitarist or whatever.
Sure, of course. I'm all for ignoring the rules and write your own book. To quote Keii Haino then "First there was music, then came the rules", and that sums it up perfectly. I was trying to say Matt Lukin was a good bass player because he was able to keep up with Buzz and Dale at that time because Gluey Porch Treatments is one motherf*cking isnane album! The structures, rythm shifts, fast, slow, stop, break, interval, fast, speed, slow, end.... I'm just saying he did a pretty good nevertheless and if he would have been bad he wouldn't been able to follow, I'm sure.
Come on, Fez ! Even Cobain auditioned for the Melvins and failed, and according to Rolling Stone Magazine he is the 12th best guitarist in history in their top 100 list of greatest guitarists off all time. Just to give you a loose idea on what level the Melvins are functioning.
