A HAT B-side

too far of a reach for me.

HAT B-sides are all cover songs, etc.

What about Lysol?  Maybe not, it was the first thing to pop in my head but i'm not sure the vocal part where you really hear jared fits, like the part right before the end.  But i'd throw the live versions of suicide and BF on on lysol camp easier.  there's a certain dwight fry and with teet vibe respectively.

Riff--Dales solo album

Whole song--Stag

anaconda

thats what I was trying to say earlier, alot of NWB sounds like Dale's guitar
work in Altamont and his solo release, and some of his moog interludes
on various Altamont records

Alright, after listening to A Senile Animal today, I give it the edge over Nude With Boots.

The Hawk and Civilized Worm are songs that Nude With Boots cannot top

lets compare a couple song to songs.   using songs similar styles.

The Kicking Machine vs. The Talking Horse

tough choice there.  Talking Horse sounds like a Stoner Witch throwback. which is good.
but The Kicking Machine has a better groove.  I'll push on that one.

Billy Fish vs. Civilized Worm

I gotta go with Billy Fish here.  BF is a more advanced version of a similar song.  Civilized Worm has that vocal harmony at the end that smells faintly of ghey.

Dog Island vs. A History Of Bad Men

DI far and away.  I feel like AHOBM was more of a testing-the-waters of sludge with Jared and Coady in the band. seeing (or hearing) how a sludger would come out with a couple new guys in the band who had no previous experience in laying on the breaks.  DI found a much happier medium considering Jared and Coady's presence in the band.   It just works better as a sludge rep with the new line-up.

whats next.....

any comparable suggestions?

all in all ASA is a darker and nastier album.  but NWB is a more fresh direction. even if you do consider the 70's factor.       and so on and so forth.

Sorry. Had to.

Me? gimme another week or so. remember, I hated NWB first time I heard it. ASA grabbed me immediately. But NWB its getting there for me. I could say something like "MAYBE Ill like it better than ASA" or "quickly finding its way on the "hum list" or " I grabbed NWB instead of thin lizzy to listen to today"

I disagree with your first comparision. The Talking Horse does not sound like a Stoner Witch throwback in my opinion. Also The Talking Horse sounds more original than The Kicking Machine in that while the drum breaks in The Talking Horse are Bonham-esque, the entire instrumentation and riffing recalls Led Zeppelin much more so in The Kicking Machine. Is that a bad thing in my book? No way. I like both songs but I give The Talking Horse the edge. I like the lyrics to The Talking Horse better too.

Billy Fish VS Civilised Worm. CW is  more epic in its composition than Billy Fish. The two songs are very different from one another. CW has on more than one occasion here, generated happy nostalgia for another signature Melvins song called  "With Teeth". That in itself lends credence to its superiority in the minds of Melvins fans at least. CW is the stronger song in my opinion, but again I am not dismissing Billy Fish as a terrible song. It's an awesome song.

Dog Island VS AHOBM. Ah! A worthy comparision! This is a tough one. I would say that all the songs on ASA was a testing ground for the group as it was the first album. But AHOBM was one of the stronger songs on ASA as is Dog Island on NWB. I go with Dog Island but A HOFBM is by no means a slouch.

I get better responses with ASA with the uninitiated than I have with NWB. Not because it is a "weirder" album as Buzz puts it, but because it is a dirtier album with more punch. The one guy I recently let hear both albums chose ASA over NWB. He did concede however that NWB would probably grow on him.

I gotta tell ya JD,
nude with boots is really making me re-appreciate a senile animal. I recommend that anyone here get (A)SA out of dormancy and give it another spin now that you've heard NWB.   you'll pick up on its darkness alot more when you have an apples to apples comparison.

Playing the Talking Horse straight after the Kicking Machine just feels so right.
