Hey there! Some of you have been wondering what the hell has our friend Kevin Rutmanis (Cows, Melvins, Tomahawk) been up to. Well if you are in LA, you can find out.
Kevin's first ever solo art gallery showing (paintings, sculptures) is Jan 7th - Feb 17th at DIY gallery, 1218 Temple Blvd., LA,CA 90026, 213/977-9602
then his latest musical offering, Hepa-Titus plays the Smell in LA on Feb 12th.
Time to catch up with old friends!
Just thought you guys may care.
Art: the struggling musicians last resort.
Neat.
Great news. Why did Ipecac post that?

Because Kevin is their friend and they are happy that he is doing well and off the booze?
So, like, is kevin, like, now in a position, like, that he could, like, rejoin the melvins, if ever, like, big B boys decided to go their separate ways... like...? Because that would be sweet, not that I want the big melvins to break up, you know.

maybe, but guess Buzz isn't for the reunions.in that case they would probably think to a new member and you know,Dale recently used to jam with a new friend 8-[
as much as I would like to see kev rut rejoin MELVINS I can fairly confidently say that will never ever happen.
it just goes against the entire MELVINS philosphy of constant evolution and staying fresh.
PS: I should probably move this thread to MUSIC since kevin rutmanis is not a member of MELVINS. therefore by the rules of this message board it does not belong here.

Cool, I think I'm going to go to the show.
Bob Bruno is playing too it's going to be cool.
dual bass players, anyone??
It sounds like a pretty good idea, but I like how the Melvins manage to consume an entire band. They should keep doing that, they just have to get Toshi then they could move onto the rest of Porn and Altamont

if you're going to do it you might as well go all the way and throw fantomas in there as well.
imagine that stage clusterfuck. 4 bass, 4 drums, 4 guitar, etc. etc. etc.
I like the way that shapes up. imagine Lovely Butterflies with dale, coady, joey osborne and lombardo.
that, my good friend, would kick your ass up and down the street.
Or imagine Spreadeagle Beagle for that matter. Or any song. They could do fantomas too, but that's not all the way yet. They'd have to get David Yow, Lustmord and David Scott Stone too
Melvins 1983 happend so it's possible Kevin could play again.

i have had my ass kicked up and down the street before... I kind of thought it was a bit excessive to go all the way up then back down the street whilst getting my ass devastated by big bruno. I say they drop the drummer keep dale add a guitarists get a new bassist, rebuild the engine, rotate the tires, bomb the old build the new.
I hope Kevin comes back.
I mean, I guess I should give the Big Belvins more of a chance, but they aren't nearly as awesome as Kevin-era Melvins.
Look how ridiculously productive that period was. 5 legit albums, the Crybaby collab, the Sieg Howdy "odds and sods" collection, and enough other odds and ends tracks to form an album in and of itself.
And during this time Kevin released two awesome albums with Tomahawk and Buzz got in 4 records with Fantomas, which was even combined with the Melvins.
The Melvins' wiki even states Buzz said w/ Kevin it was the definitive lineup.
That he was kicked out of two bands doesn't suggest Buzz was being Buzz, but that it was legitimately Kevin's fault.
Whatever.

:? don't know,i always thought more members in a band is not necessairly better, especially speaking of Melvins.do you guys still think Fantomas+Melvins sounds so great?it sounds chaotic and not in the best sense of the word.only an opinion.

agreed. at some point too many guitars/bass's'sss turns to chaos. but more drummers is a potentially interesting concept.
yeah, more drummers is "potentially"interesting...obviously not so interesting if they play exactly in synch for most of the time.just out of curiosity, do you prefer Dale only,or Dale along with Coady?we probably got the same thought dear glen

that is a deep conversation. short answer: dale dale DALE.
I would much rather hear dale working alone. he is one of the most creative, talented and unique drummers in the world. I'm a purist for his work. I'd give my lefty to get a recording of just the drum tracks for all the MELVINS releases prior to (A)SA. just to more clearly hear every strike, crash and thud.
long answer: coady willis is an extremely talented and intense drummer in his own rite. I think the concept of dale and coady together is a fine concept with much potential. potential that I don't think we've heard yet. they could do so many more things with change-offs and independent beats as opposed to the note for note exact same drumming they do now. its cool. but I think in reality it actually takes away from both of their talent becuase they get more hung up on the timing. they'd be better off sitting down and letting loose. then taking what each creates and meshing it together. its good now, but it could be mindblowing. they need to spend about a month in a studio just jamming together freestyle. playing shows helps a little but its still the same exact drumming night after night after night.
agreed.we've not heard their full potential yet,we've heard a little and good anticipation of it on ASA,then NWB,i love it but let me say, they've been so lazy about drumming on that album.
Quote from: black stallion on December 05, 2008, 07:53:14 AM
,they've been so lazy about drumming on that album.
sometimes I wonder if its on purpose. like they don't want to "over do" the whole double drumming thing. they still want the albums to be considered "MELVINS" albums and not "drum" albums.
just a thought.
I still think the big business albums released during this time have been better than the Melvins albums released.
Agree about the drums not being full up to speed. Don't know what they could do better, but it seems like they can.
I think the only awesome thing to happen is the vocal harmonies. History of bad men rocks.
I never thought I'd see the day that the term "vocal harmonies" is being used to describe MELVINS music.
yet it works.
The Melvins/Big Biz material is interesting and different but only sounds outstanding in a live setting, imo. The only thing i like is how its heavy in a completely different way than other Melvins material becuase of the double drums, but im getting a little sick of this lineup. That being said im sure they'll stick together for at least a couple more albums.
I predict at least one more album. maybe 2. buzz has been quoted as saying the next studio album is going to go in a different direction.
but heres a thought: what next? do buzz and dale go out and find some new undiscovered bassist to step in? do they go without a bassist and do all their own studio work, then hire someone to tour? do they find some well known bass legend who's band is no more (kinda like the way they got kev)? and then do they abandon all Big Biz era material without the 2 drummers and jared's vocals?
what? I ask you.
or.... is that the end? I say no. this is buzz and dale's career. neither one is eligable for social security yet. so they'll make music somehow.
hard to tell,in my opinion they should try something new about the studio recording,i'd like to see them working again with an external producer, although Toshi's work has always been excellent.guess that will never happen though.
Buzz really oughta hop on bass.
Anyways, I'm surprised there is so much dissent to the lineup.
But yeah, they should try and open for Mastodon or other big bands to make some cash, expand the fan base. I'd like to see them try a mainstream metal album.
It seems like, for being a classic band with a lot of history, they don't get a lot of love in the industry. You can read pitchfork, or Onion AV club, or any board, and it seems like people go ga-ga over the Pixies, or Gang of Four, or other indie bands, but the Melvins don't get the same love. Perhaps because their music isn't easily pigeonholed and it takes a bit to appreciate their artistic vision. Perhaps because it isn't poppy.
Anyways, I ramble on.

What's next? I don't know. But my opinion of where they're at is that it has become a little incestuous for my taste. They seem to have closed ranks, and only work with the Big Biz/ Porn/ Fantomas/ Patton network. I'm sure they've gotten to the point where these are the people they enjoy recording/ touring with and that makes it comfortable and enjoyable, but it's too predictable. At least they are still recording and touring though, it could be worse.

I think the strangest thing is the number of people that love Fantomas, Mr. Bungle and Boris but don't have a clue about the Melvins. They just don't have the same level of trendiness, i guess.

I'm the opposite. I mean I've heard the above bands. I pretty much hate anything by Mike Patton, with the exception of FNM Angel Dust and some Tomahawk tracks but that's more for Kevin and Duane's contribution. He sucks and I can't understand why Buzz works with this no-talent retard. Well that's a little harsh but I'm fresh from watching the latest Fantomas live dvd. I have yet to really explore Boris but I've heard some stuff by them. They just didn't grab me right away.
I love Kevin. I vote for him to come back on board. Bring him back, please. (wishful thinking)

You can't top that bass.
Having both Coady and Dale drumming is like mutually assured destruction. The show I saw with Jared on bass and no Coady, just Dale, was good. I enjoyed it a lot, it was a little more loose. But when both Dale and Coady are drumming they are more of a precision machine because they have to be drumming together, which I think adds a lot more than people give them credit for and is more difficult than you may imagine. Why do marching bands have so many drummers, or orchestras? They also don't play exactly the same things. As Buzz says over and over again, he thinks about this stuff more than anybody, including us losers.
I don't know, I can only maybe think of one or two parts where having two drummers was needed.
And I nominate Kevin's bass on Manky's intro to be "Best music to scare stoners... ever"
WE WANT KEV
I've mentioned this once before, but seems appropriate to mention again in this thread. Here is my ultimate musical dream:
Melvins tour line up from 2009-until the end of time.
Big Business opens.
Melvins w/Big Business plays a set.
Melvins w/Kevin plays a set.
Show ends and I walk out of the venue and say "that was the coolest thing I ever saw".
Shove It. 8)

okay then. the past and present is 4 piece MELV with 2 drummers. what is the future?
even if its the same as the past and present, I don't think it will be the
same as past and present.
I take buzz's words seriously when his says "next album different direction". I predict the winning back of some lost souls.
Ok besides You've Never Been Right, what songs utilize the two drummers to full effect?
I predict a year or so break for the melvins, with more fantomas and possibly porn, altamont tours.
The drummers are for a live visual and force effect. A band isn't just studio albums.
What I'm saying is that you people don't appreciate showmanship. Also, two drumkits playing in synch sounds different that a single drumkit even if they're playing the same thing. And the hybrid Crover/Willis beats don't sound like exactly either of them on their own. And the drumming on ASA and NWB are both quite distinct in style and execution.
Involving Patton in the main Melvins project anything is a terrible idea.
I like the Big Biz line up
Big Biz and Kevin era are my favorite though. 8)
I think the bigbiz lineup has a few more albums left in 'em and I don't think the full potential has been realized yet. If anyone saw the Porn noise sets on this last tour with Dale and Coady drumming you'd know what I'm talking about. These guys have a lot more tricks up their sleeve. Not to mention that we've got 3 (4?) accomplished vocalist on in this new line up. Also there's a ton of people they can incorporate into their studio sound still. I mean, Adam Jones, Trevor Dunn, David Scott Stone, Lustmord, and Jello Biafra are all still in the picture, not to mention Dale's been doing bass and Mike Dillard is back on drums for Melvins 1983. They've got all kinds of people and talents they can utilize. Personally, I think the new albums are great, but they are going to have to try to mix it up with the lineup to make sure it doesn't start sounding too samey. Considering that the band we're talking about is the melvins, I'm sure the next one will sound different.
I think we'd have ourselves a pretty kickass album if the Melvins did some things like -
Use more Deaf Nephews production (in the vein of the Enchanted Thought Fist remix on Sieg Howdy!)
Utilized the multiple drummer line up in a way that wasn't mostly in-unison playing
bring in more electronics via David Scott Stone and Lustmord. Hell, if they did something interesting with it I'd even argue for making electronics part of the live show
Experiment and be more adventurous with their multiple vocal lineup
Get Dillard and Dunn in the studio, just for kicks.
I've read interviews with Buzzo where he implies that Big Business will be around for a while. I enjoy the Big Biz material quite a bit, but ive just had enough. I dont want to say i dislike this lineup - their albums are fucking stellar - but the Melvins have done work i like a lot more and that i go back to listen to a lot more than Nude With Boots or (A) Senile Animal. Hopefully their next release will prove me wrong. I know its not just Big Business that's making me sick of this lineup, becuase i'm actually anticipating their newest release more than the next Melvins release. But, like i said.. I want to be proved wrong and would love to see something completely different. I'm sure they will deliver especially since BB has been massively improving.
Al Cisneros
David Yow. Think about how awesome it would be if they did a record with Yow doing vocals on early melvins songs. Imagine what Eye Flys would sound like.
They've collabed with Big biz, j-lo, lustmord and how many people on Crybaby, why not just do a bunch of one-off collabs?
No offense to anyone...

That would be pretty cool. Maybe they could do a few collaborations in the style of a 3 way split. 3 different lineups with 3 songs per lineup.
The Crybaby 2009?
I listen to the Crybaby as often as I listen to Prick. Do people actually sit down and listen to it? No point in repeating the past, I am more than happy with the current line-up and albums.

Why's that? I feel that most of what was said reguarded what Buzzo's next decision would be, and there was nothing that scandalous. Its not like anybody was saying the Melvins should collaborate with Timbaland for their next album.

I thought the Crybaby was awesome, and I think some of the collaborations on that disc definitely should be expanded to whole albums.
I just hope they stay healthy enough to keep making music and touring. Buzz and Dale both look a couple years out of Heart attack city.
