Title: Grumpy's Reviews
Post by: GrimReaper on December 15, 2008, 02:28:24 PM

Where are they?

There was so much stuff happening and we want to hear about it.

Can't you understand my pain?

Last night, crazy snow storm, Buzz didn't do much bartending, wandered around, talked to folks.  He remembered me from when I interviewed him this summer and we talked for a few minutes.  I heard a rumor that he had gotten drunk the night before and told the crowd at the Triple Rock that this was the first time he'd been drunk in 20 years.  I was not there so I cannot confirm.  As for the show last night.  Buzz warmed up the crowd a little bit with some banter about not being able to get a DUI in a snowstorm, how they should let the kid (Kyle?) drink because it was snowing.  He asked the crowd if anyone had pot, when a bunch of people affirmed they did, he said "You're all under arrest.  Now who has the heroin?"  They played fairly standard stuff.  Kicking Machine, Dog Island, Nude with Boots, C Worm, Metal Trilogy, blah blah, My generation, Star Spangled Banner, the only older song was Tipping the Lion.  They did do a weird little "Fuck around, fuck around, we fuck around"  intro to soemthing, I forget what, it wasn't like the Dwarves though.  This drunken bike club dude was flipping the band off during star spangled, trenchant political commentary if there ever was.  At the end of the set some guy down front was yelling bullshit, Buzz said "Bullshit?  You wanted more?  Oh, I'm so sorry for you."  A few minutes after the house music came back up Dale came out and asked the crowd if they wanted an encore, there was no discernbile response and Dale said something like, "well, you don't get one."  most people had already headed out or were about to by that time anyway.  Overall, I had fun, but it was probably the most bored I have been by a Melvins show, I was hoping to at least see Revolve.  They weren't as tight as they were this summer, probably for lack of a real monitor system.  I guess they have been too busy to practice any other songs.  Regardless, it was a Melvins show and that's better than most shows.

thanks for your review Mike.i can see what you mean with the most bored you've been by a Melvins show and guess they don't really need to practice for playing a normal show, since they've been on tour for so long time, playing the same set list every night.personally i'm not so excited by Buzz as showman,i prefer when he plays his Les Paul.they probably have taken it not so seriously, since it wasn't an "official" show.

Thanks for the review! I can't believe the crowd didn't want an encore. ?

Buzz's decision to get drunk after 20 years is very intriguing.

Great picture too by the way.

Bad Ronald just got me a ticket and a room for GAMH. So it looks like I have one more Melvins show this year. 8)

Yea, I am not trying to start nasty rumors, but a few people mentioned it.  And if the man decided to get drunk, no big deal.  Sidebar to this all, I went record browsing last night and as I walked in there was Haze, Buzz, Dale, and Adam.  Buzz said, "Uh oh, this guy has been following us."  I told him I slipped a GPS on him the night before when we got the picture taken.  They had the Kiss solo albums at the store and I joked with him about having him sign the Gene one.  He said, "Believe it or not, I didn't play on that one."  Then Haze started telling stories about being on tour in Europe with Killdozer and Laughing Hyenas.  It was pretty awesome.

He was talking about how they got to amsterdam first day of the trip and he was looking forward to seeing the sights with the Killdozer guys, going to the museum of torture, etc. and as they got to the hotel and started bring their bags in, suddenly Larissa got ejected from the hotel followed by all their bags as the proprieter screamed at them "get out you junkies!  No junkies!"  She apparently had walked right in and first think asked the front desk where she could score some dope.  He said the whole tour went downhill from there, having to constantly go to the worst parts of cities to track her down because she was always out trying to score.  This was his first trip out of the country and she ruined it.  Said she was totally heinous and he could never listen to Laughing Hyenas after that.

he had gotten drunk the night before and told the crowd at the Triple Rock that this was the first time he'd been drunk in 20 years.

I feel partially responsible for this.     perhaps Buzz wanted to see how the other half lives.  the other have being the drunken fools he faces every night on tour.   I've been drunk at a MELVINS show before.    do the math.

PS: those vids are bad ass.  I love coady and dale's kits facing each other.

True that my friend. I've only been to a couple of shows, but each time the crowd would've given their eye teeth for another encore.

After watching the videos I see that I didn't actually hear what Dale said.  He asked if we wanted one more, then he told a joke and was done.  There never was any intention of an encore, just an attempt to confuse the audience.  At the time I was telling this guy I was talking to that there was no way they were gonna play an encore, because they don't, and Jared looked like he was on a mission when he left the stage.  The guy's girlfriend tried to argue with me that she has seen Melvins play encores plenty of times.  Out of 8 times seeing them, I have yet to see an encore, or know of any shows with an encore, aside from maybe early ones.  I can't think right now.  Bottom line, I missed Dale's joke and misunderstood what he said.  There was no real chance of an encore.

I was just reading a really poor translation of Toshi's blog and it seems that the original intent for the Grumpy's show was to have Big Business encore the Melvins show just as Melvins had encored the Big Biz show the night before, but apparently Jared did not feel well.  This would explain why he immediately and purposely left the stage after playing his last note.  Too bad.  Also, I also have it on good authority that Buzz was fucking with the crowd by proclaiming he was drunk the night before, no real surprise there, he loves to fuck with people.  And as I said earlier, it was just a rumor.  So the fact that he said he was drunk was true, but him actually being drunk was not.

Whats the drink he makes with a sausage in a shot of Jagermeister?

it was three shots of jager, and one vienna sausage,
Buzz  referred to it as a Triple Austria
