From an interview in the Seattle Stranger...
QuoteIs there a stigma you have with the record?
No, nothing ruined it for me, not in the least. The experience in and of itself was clouded by a lot of rock star
Just once I'd like to hear Buzz say something to the effect of it's too bad Cobain died, he was a friend. Rather than good riddance. And maybe he has. Not that I've seen.
I don't think he ever was really a "friend" though.
I'm willing to bet they were friends; most likely Buzz is just angry with his death.
I remember reading an interview with Dale in a drumming mag. when they asked how he got into using a gong and he said he bought his first one after he heard about Cobain's death. He took it home and tore it up working out some emotions. Obviously not a direct quote.

I always thought Nirvana would have been right at home on The Gong Show.

From everything I've read both about the Melvins and about Nirvana over the years, I gather than Buzz, Dale, Kurt, Krist, and even Dave were all pretty close back in those days. I think everyone had a hard time being close to Kurt once the succubus arrived on the scene. The one exception to that seems to have been Dylan Carlson.
It's interesting to look through Cobain's "Journal's" and read some of the letters he wrote to Dale. I don't remeber if there were any directly to Buzz and I'm too lazy, err busy, to look.
I think some people can have the end outweigh the past. It appears all ended badly with most of the people in/around Nirvana...so why look back like the bad shit didn't happen? I know many people including myself who look at some past relationships, where many good times were had, and have nothing positive to say about those people.
I also think that some folks have no sympathy for people who destroy themselves. I think of a guy like Buzz as someone who won't shed many tears for people who make bad decisions...but who the fuck knows.
I personally never gave a fuck about any Nirvana connection. it actually prevented me from liking them until about 10 years ago. I had seen them a few times before that, first time in 93, and didn't pay much attention because of all the cobain quotes.
Here we go again...
What was was wrong with Nirvana? Oh, they sold millions of records, so they suck. You know, Cobain could have ignored the Melvins instead of referencing them whenever he had the chance. He could have distanced himself from them. But instead he had a part in them getting on Atlantic and gave them a chance for more exposure.
Nirvana was hands down better than any mainstream band out there at the time. And Nirvana was a springboard to find out about other cool bands like Scratch Acid, Melvins, Flipper and others. He proudly cited his influences and that in turn helped those bands out. I'm sure the back catalog of Scratch Acid benefited from the name plugging.
I continue to like Nirvana, especially their more "out there stuff" off of Incesticide.
They were all friends. Buzz is just acting that way out of anger and sorrow. Cobain was an idiot for becoming a junkie, now he's dead. But that doesn't mean they were not friends.
Buzz obviously did not think that Courtney Love was good for Kurt. But that doesn't matter. Kurt thought so and married her and had a child with her.
or maybe Nirvana's music is just boring.

Boring? I don't think that is it. It has more to do with them being equated as "big rock star sell outs" in the minds of elitist, hip, indie rock clientele.
The Roman makes a good point.
I have defended Tool and such over bullshit sell out crap plenty of times on this board.
The fact is, to some of us, Nirvana(or tool) is just plain boring and it has nothing to do with 12 year olds wearing nirvana shirts or them being played on MTV.
Back on topic, Love is a cunt. Remember when she accused Buzz of killing Cobain? Hilarious.

Love is a cunt. And I gotta go with Flavi Flav on the other.
I have no problem with Tool. But Nirvana only put out an actual 3 studio albums before Cobain blasted himself and those albums have been out for a good while.-- between 1989-1993. It would be easy to get bored with just 3 albums.
i'll tell ya this: tool bores the hell outta me! the wifey SLEPT through the last show.
Their music does have a certain rhythm that lends itself more to contemplation rather than energy. It's closer to sludgy shoegazer music.
How is it possible to fall in love with Courtney Love? That's what I would like to know.
If one of your friends would marry her, how would that make you feel about your friend? Is he still your friend?
Just a thought..
Drugs...it was the drugs all along.
All the drugs he took or do you mean heroin?
Sure, Buzz and Kurt knew each other when they were younger, but 'friends friends'? I don't know, I can only speculate.
I can totally relate with the idea of the bad outweighing the good in a relationship. I don't care about that part of it. I don't care who like's a certain band or doesn't. To each their own. In one of the other threads someone asked if the Melvins have offended them in any way, with the Nazi symbols or NAMBLA stickers etc. The only thing that has bothered me is the chants from the stage about Cobains death, the Walsby posters about another dead junkie, some of Buzz's comments in interviews about his death. The man is dead. Leave it alone. And Courtney Love is a piece of shit.

That was one of the funniest things I ever read. If that was remotely true, I'd picture it'd be something like this....
- Buzz makes a lethal speedball, Courtney tries to "stop" him....then Buzz shoves the needle right in her eye, looks at Cobain like he's a moron, and storms off yammering some incomprehensible bullshit, which later becomes the lyrics to a song that's a million times better than Honey bucket.
The copes file it as a "suicide" and Kurt just sits there drooling on himself.
TH'END.
We all know Buzz is never completely open about anything. He's always contrarian, sarcastic, does a lot of "socratic method" in interviews (responds to questions with questions) and generally clouds things.
Socrates? Pfft!
Drink up, p
Nietzsche? Like I Nietzsche mouth fulla my cock
nah, just a plato/socrates hater. 8)
mine was just a Yowism

I agree, but yeah, who the fuck knows. Buzz probably thought Kurt was a dumbass for getting involved with that wretched excuse for a human being. I'm surprised she's even still around.

Truth.
That bitch is crazy.
Anyone else think Courtney Love and Nancy Spungen just might be the same person. (Maybe some sort of body transferring demon who lures young rock stars to their heroin induced doom).

From Revolver magazine...
"I really can't remember the first time i met Kurt. I had a bunch of classes in school with him. I remember him as having a really amazing, dark, black sense of humor. He would do stuff like draw teachers having things happen to them, that looked just like the teachers, you know? i remember when we were in high school, one of them was a Pac-Man game that included all the teachers we had, being eaten by the Pac-Man - but it was far more vicious. We weren't big socialites in the high school scene, believe it or not. We grew up in a highly depressing, oppressive environment. And ultimately, that kind of thinking, that kind of upbringing led to his death. It's like being in a straightjacket. It was hopeless and pointless. You wanna get the real story of what motivated him? i remember when I took him to his first punk rock concert, which was Black Flag. I really put him over the edge. I mean, once you see something like that, an extraordinary good show...I just remember him saying, "That's exactly what I want to do. That's it. This is me." We played music together all the time: me, him, Krist Novoselic, and Dale. That's why Dale ended up playing with Nirvana. Kurt wasn't a very good guitar player, but it really didn't make much difference. What he could do was put two chords together wich a vocal melody in a way that people liked. Technical ability rarely has anything to do with making music. I was there at the very last show Nirvana played, which was the last time I saw him. He wasn't happy. The very last thing he ever said to me was, "I should just be doing this solo." At that last show, i told him to leave, get out, run. He needed to get off drugs. If he wasn't on drugs, none of that would've happened. Kurt, he could've had a future, he could've turned his life around, and he would've been a wonderful person. It wouldn't have been easy, but he could have done it. I would've preferred that. That or no success whatsoever. I would be far happier if he had never had one iota of success and was alive. The music and all that stuff means nothing to me above and beyond that. I'm sorry but I refuse to be one of those people who say, "It was great." I don't feel that way. And it offends me when people try to make it like that. This is not a happy story. He's dead and gone and over. And I'm not over it."

That was nice of Buzz. I enjoyed reading that.
nice post
More comments about Kurt and Nirvana from this months issue of Guitar World where Buzz answers some questions from readers. Sorry if this was already posted someplace else.
Q: I've heard stories that Kurt Cobain used to roadie for the Melvins when you were first starting out in Washington. Is that true, and when did you first Meet Kurt?
Buzz: I knew Kurt since he was in little league. We lived in a very small town and we went to school together, even though he was a few years younger than me. What originally attracted me to him was his dark sense of humor. We were kindred spirits. We'd sit in art class and he'd draw perfect representations of the art teacher being killed. We'd laugh our asses off. People don't understand that he was a funny motherfucker. He was not just some down, dour drug addict. Nobody laughed more than Kurt, and we had great times together.
I always think it's funny that people say he roadied for us. Look at him! He couldn't lift himself out of bed. You think he could roadie for someone? But we all hung out a lot. [Nirvana bassist] Krist Novoselic drove for us for a while. But roadie? We didn't have a roadie. I didn't even know what a roadie was until 1990. In order to hire someone to roadie you have to be making money. The first time we made money was in 1988, and that was $200. If we would go to Seattle and play a show and make $160, maybe we'd all go buy everyone a burrito. That's it. There was no money.
And people also say Kurt tried out for the Melvins. Yeah, right. I've never had tryouts for this band, ever. I can't imagine doing that. We all jammed and played together back then. It was hopeless and stupid and horrific and mind numbing. There are happy memories, but in the end it's a tragedy. I can't rewrite history in such a way that makes me feel good about it. Honestly, I wish Kurt would have never become famous and was still alive. I don't give a fucking shit about any of that [success]. If that hastened his death, it's the worst thing that could have happened.
