Title: Melvins at the Blank Club
Post by: HogLegged on July 24, 2009, 02:00:16 AM
Kind of exited, I just got my tickets. Melvins in San Jose on Friday, August 7th, Sunn O))) the next night in SF!
Does anyone know who is opening for the Melvins for this show?

ive had my ticket for a few weeks, and the special guest concept has been driving me wild.

you should check out sunn o))) at the brookdale lodge in the santa cruz mountains on the 9th instead. that place is hauntingly beautiful, and i can imagine it being the perfect setting for such a band.

I've scoured the Internet and I still can't tell you who the special guest is.  I'd hazard a guess at Altamont but other than that nothing comes to mind.

Anyone heard what they might be doing for the 2 sets? I read a review from a show in Boston back in May, I'm pretty sure they can't fit 2 drum sets on the stage at The Blank Club, so I'm guess we'll be seeing them as a 3 piece. Would love to hear the early stuff live and I missed Houdini live a couple NYE's ago.

QuoteYep, I went last night and the show was awesome. Melvins came out, with the original drummer and Dale did the bass. Buzz referred Dale as Matt Lukin and they did the entire Mangled Demos. Mike left the drums and Dale went behind the drum kit. What followed was really cool. It was just Buzz and Dale, with no bass, and the did a variety of songs from several albums. They even threw in 1 song from Nude with Boots. Trevor Dunn finally came out and the Melvins did the entire Houdini album. They did 2 more songs, which I think was from Stag and that was it. The Melvins came on at 9:30 pmand played for over 2 hours. The show was really cool and I'm psyched I went.

You'd be surprised where you can stick a drum kit.  It will be a four piece.

If they can fit them on the stage at John Henry's ( they can ), they can fit them anywhere.

If not, Coady will just have to sit on Dales lap and play.

Same here! I was at the GAMH show in December, that was the first time I'd seen The Melvins since the late '90s, I was fucking floored at that show. I went into the show not totally sure what to expect and was beyond blown away by them, plus that set list for that show was stellar.

Agreed Dead Bob..I will be going to this show too. I will be traveling up from SD that day. Seems to be the normal Bay folk from this place attending. I might be taking some pictures to remember the event by but we will see. I'm excited for the two sets. The special guest got me thinking but a 1983 set will never fail. We'll see what happens.

Just got back from black club. Very small place. Very intimate. Lots of older songs was in the setlist.

Too drunk to try to recall the songs. But it was quite good. Very fun. Defiantly one of the best Melvins show I've been to in a while.

Ok, time to screw my wife. Nite nite

yeah dude. the marilyn manons coke story was great.

black bock, the bit, zodiac, all that lysol shit, great great setlist. might be worht noting the stage setup as well. the drums were out front, on the very edge of the stage with jared and buzz behind the kit. stage was tiny. great fuckin show. dont know if it was worth being stuck in SJ all nite on foot, with no phone (or charger), nowhere to stay and so forth.. finally found a cheap enough hotel and liquor store--at like 1:57--and crashed the fuck out. downtown san jose douche bags EVERYWHERE.

The show was friggin' awesome! I loved how the band was practically stacked on top of each other on that small stage and having the drums front and center. The Marilyn Manson cocaine story was hilarious, I don't think I've ever heard Buzzo talk that much.

Buzz came on and was saying they had to soundcheck because their new sound guy was running late. The new sound guy did sound for Marylin Manson a few months ago and was sent off to try and score him some cocaine. The sound guy ended up getting busted for possession and had to appear in court in San Jose the day of the show which caused everything to run late. There may have been a bit more to the story but thats the jist of it.

I remember the coke story actually affecting things a bit deeper. I think they played that show in SJ soley based on the fact that dude had to appear in court in SJ that day. He wanted a "warm up" show of sorts to work out the kinks before they hit the road with Down, if i recall correctly. Not only were they playing this show and in SJ because of him, he ran late on top of it, so they did that late sound check in front of everyone. I bet Buzz told that long ass story for a lot of reasons, but maybe one was to show that guy how it felt to be lagged on and call him out in the process, all while entertaining us. But who cares about motive-- it was good shit in any case.

Thanks Dead Bob and Honkster.  I suppose even watching Melvins soundchecking would be eventful.  You'd think Marilyn Manson would have a designated procurer of drugs other than a soundman.
