and before that he'd been using a black gibson les paul forever but not no more i guess, as for pedals he's got a couple regular boss overdrive/distortion pedals chained together and the only modulation he uses is a boss delay. the only time i ever saw the melvins live they were playing at grumpy's in minneapolis last summer and buzz used the opening band's amp but i think for the most part he uses just a normal marshall. he really doesn't care much about the gear at all and given that he's mostly concerned with a live sound it makes sense. you don't need anything particularly unique to get the kind of sounds he does especially given the high volume and gain in a live setting. as for dale as far as i can tell he uses this

That's funny I have seen the Melvins more times than I can remember and I have seen him use all kinds of heads. Marshall, the Sun Beta Lead era stands out, but for the longest time he has used a rack mount system of which I could not tell you what is involved or who makes it, and 2 Hi Watt cabinets. He has been usung the Hi- Watt cabinets for a long time now if I am not mistaken.

ah I see, I had no idea Isis used those before Buzz.
I'm not a 100% sure Brent from Mastodon uses one, but I saw a recent picture of him playing live with a clear body, v-neck guitar with what looked like a metal neck & head. I'm no guitar monkey, though, so I could be wrong.

...into solidstate power amps powering one HiWatt 4x12 on each side of the stage as well as a 1x15 on each side of the stage as well. He uses two Boss ODB-3 bass overdrive pedals which I think is mentioned in that video. I've seen he and Adam Jones both play Mesa Boogies at the first Jelvins show which I think were backline rentals since they had just flown in for two nights. In pictures/videos I've seen of them in Europe Buzz has used Marshalls and Oranges. Like someone else said though, the gear's not that important. Basically any decent humbucker guitar through a basic distortion pedal into a loud classic guitar amp is gonna get you in the ballpark. The majority of the sound though is in the fingers.
Jared uses tons of pedals including a POG. I'm guessing he mostly uses those for BB sets though. Never seen him onstage for a Melvins show when Biz was not performing so I don't know. Jared plays a J-bass, but most Melvins bassists have played P-basses. Kevin played custom basses with G&L pickups. The only pedal I remember seeing in his setup was a Line 6 DL-4.

I saw Juan (ex-Torche) using one of those guitars before Buzz, too. It was at the 40 Watt in Athens, and I spoke with him afterward and my friend and I had mentioned it and he let us look at it and hold it. The thing is really lite and he gave us the card of the man who made them. Hopefully my friend still has it and I'll try and get a photo up here. I believe he was based out of FL.

The MXR microamp rules. Surprisingly for bass as well. It adds nice distortion without losing much low end or muddying it up the way a Big Muff can.

I want one of those shit import Jap Les paul looking guitars like buzz had from their origional set...looks like a 70's knock off...probly was a decent guitar actually...I dunno...I have a few older guitars I like a hell of a lot, I got one out of a snowbank one year and fixed it up...my favourite one to record with these days, it's a 60's Dana Telecaster (think john spencer Blues explosion sounding)
do you think of melvins as being more of a solid state band back then, I like to think of them around the bullhead era as switching their set up...
I mean I think they have bought a LOT of sweet gear since they first started.
joe preston in my opinion had the loudest sounding bass in the recordings, those Sunn cabs really have a low low frequency response!
but I like the sound of Lori's bass too, subtle but solid, I think eggnog kicks total arse!

Buzz mentioned in an interview he prefers the Boss Bass Overdrive because it has more EQ-settings...

today my beta bass preamp came and i was playing around with my squire PJ and i got a pretty convincing tone resembling the intro to inhumanity and death. i had the A channel drive down for clean, bass at 10 and the rest at 0 and then for the B channel nearly the opposite, drive 10 bass 0 mid 6 or 7 and treble 6 or 7 and blend them to tast with both pickups. the J bridge pickup is key in this as well.
It's all about the rat for anything pre-NWB

even more so than that, it may be strickly if he wasnt using tweeters before in his cabs, ive got PA cabs and if you go full range, the boss pedals rocks the fuck out of the horn, but if you bypass the horn and only plug into the 15 everything above like 1500hz doesnt exist.
AKA 412s and sunn combos arent gonna shine quite the same way his "blown" cabs do now.

Buzz Osborne is a man who needs little introduction, but Basses Loaded, his latest album with rock misfits Melvins, warrants some explanation.
The concept is thus: six bass players feature across the album - Nirvana's Krist Novoselic, Butthole Surfers' J.D. Pinkus and Mr. Bungle/Fantomas's Trevor Dunn among them - each contributing their own musical two cents to the record's 12 tracks (which include a cover of Take Me Out To The Ballgame, naturally).
Before the band head out on a European trek in June, Buzz sat down with MusicRadar to share his thoughts on the wonders of automatic playing and his long-lost Rickenbacker, not to mention an almighty helping of sage advice for his younger self...
1. What was your first guitar and when did you get it?
"My first guitar was some chunk-of-shit nylon-string acoustic that cost about $30, which I bought in 11th grade. I didn't get an electric guitar until I was out of high school. That was an eye-opener.
"The first real electric guitar I ever had was a 1969 Les Paul Custom I bought in 1982 for $400, and it almost killed me to pay that much money for a guitar. I still have it and have recently rebuilt it to as close to original as I could get it. It's the only Les Paul I have that hasn't had the neck broken on it."
I didn't get an electric guitar until I was out of high school. That was an eye-opener
2. The building's burning down – what one guitar do you save?
"Fuck the guitars, I'd save my dogs! Ha! Actually I'd probably save that Les Paul. It's been with me this long..."
3. Is there a guitar, or piece of gear, that you regret letting go?
"Around 1984, I had a Rickenbacker solidbody 481 that I really liked, but unfortunately I sold it to our bass player at the time, Matt Lukin, when I was short of cash. I figured I would buy it back from him at some point, but he turned around and immediately sold it. I never forgave him for that. Ha!
"I should go buy another one now that I think about it... I think I will. Actually, it was stupid shit like that that contributed to me not feeling bad about booting his ass out of the band and not regretting it one bit. He did a lot of that sort of stupid shit that, of course, he doesn't remember, but I do. I tend to have a long memory."
4. And what's the next piece of gear you'd like to acquire?
"A Rickenbacker 481 electric guitar. Ha!"
5. Is there an aspect of guitar playing that you'd like to be better at?
"Playing without thinking at all. Automatic playing is almost like magic, and I love it when it happens. We view our live sets the same way. If it's an hour, then the entire hour is important, including the space between the songs. It's more performance art than some bullshit rock show. If you want a bullshit rock show, why look to us for that?"

6. When did you last practise and what did you play?
"For practising, I usually run through a series of agility exercises I've developed over the years, which helps a great deal in keeping you on your toes guitar-wise, then I play the same exercises with my eyes closed for as long as I can stand it.
"Finally, I'll run through a bunch of cover songs I like to play that are pretty tough until I feel I have them down good enough to move on, then I'll start working on new material."
7. If you could have a guitar lesson from one guitarist, dead or alive, who would it be?
"Maybe Hendrix, but I don't know - that's a tough one."
8. What gear would you take with you to a desert island?
"One of my aluminium Electrical guitars, a decent combo amp and a compressor. Compressors rule."
9. What's the worst thing that's ever happened to you onstage?
"Gear taking a shit mid-show. PAs going out, lights going out or just having all the power go out. That's never good. There's nothing you can do. You stand there like an idiot."
10. What advice would you give your younger self about playing the guitar?

Fartlips you had friends who worked at Gibson, right? Has the price of the Gibson les Paul Custom exponentially increased since the early 80s (inflation adjustment aside)? They really seem prohibitively expensive now, and I honestly can't justify buying one without being a) independently wealthy or b) a pro musician who could write one off on his taxes. :lol:

Interesting. He's got those dials cranked up all the way except for the rate. On the Boss pedals I'm used to, this would sound quite messy. Especially cranking up the step.
I've got an EQD Organizer (organ/octave pedal), if it works similar he's probably got the rate down to reduce the delay of the octave note produced and cranked the wet single to increase the presence of the octave down affect (if that's what the switch is on).
I'd hazard to guess he's using it more for the octave down effect than the Arpeggiator side.

My former guitarist had an EHX pitchfork and the octave down sounded so much more like a real bass guitar than anything you could do with a Boss octave pedal. I wish I would have known this years ago. #-o
Yeah, from what i've seen in other photos I think Buzz tried out a EHX Pitchfork aswell.

Kind of gear related, but do buzz and Dale wear ear protection? Kind of curious how they avoid becoming completely deaf after performing loud music for over 3 decades.

buzz has specifically told me he doesnt wear earplugs. Thats why he doesnt listen to anyone else.
