When I first brought Bootlicker I listened to it about 3 times and decided it wasn't for me. But last week I put in back in my CD player for some random reason and now I can't stop listening to it! I think it was because I thought it would be another The Maggot, and was disappointed when it wasn't. Anybody else had a similar feeling towards this fantastic album?
maybe i'm obsessive or something, but if i listen to one
of the trilogy CDs i just naturally play the other two as well.
fave tune on bootlicker has to be 'let it all be'. that song
just sounds like drugs to me.
:D
That's why I listened to Bootlicker again in the first place, cause I'd listened to Maggot and Crybaby that day. 'Let it all be' is an absolutly amazing song although I'm also a big fan of 'Mary Lady Bobby Kins'. But I was very sursprised to see that song was actually wrote by The Melvins.
I think I am the only one who loves (it?) "Up the Dumper"....
"Up the Dumper" gives me wood everytime I hear it. Don't forget "Black Santa"...the heaviest song ever written.
a good album

Excellent album.
I love the "roomy" dry sound. (although they may have gone over the top on treble at times)
hehe, I like that scratching sound in my ears :)
the melvins are masters of suspension, they push ALL of our buttons to the point of insanity and then they explode in cacophony(sic) of sound! :)
:D :D :D :D :D :D :D

i love bootlicker out of the three albums. all three are great, but i love the bootlicker.
So is there anyone here who didn't like it when they first heard it, and then grew to like it?:shock::shock:
Bootlicker is my favourite of the trilogy... then crybaby, then maggot. Bootlicker, Stag and Stoner Witch were my first Melvins adventures period, happened to be well hitting the bong lots too.
Quote from: LouiLoomisSo is there anyone here who didn't like it when they first heard it, and then grew to like it?:shock::shock:
yeah. that was me. Bootlicker was the third melvins album I heard (the other two were Stag & Maggot). I was more expecting somethign rocking. I first heard a friend's copy once, then bought my own about 2 years later. I love it. Perfect going-to-work-stoned music...

Your honor! I rest my case!! (http://lazerman.netomia.dk/toke.gif)
just got the bootlicker today.
suprised at how much of a turn they take here.
it's taken me a while to actually get myself to listen to some of the trilogy..... iv heard crybaby and finally got to listen to bootlicker so far.... yeah im going backwards... starting from the last album, i know... it just so happened to work out that way.
discuss what you think of the bootlicker i guess.
pure, gorgeous, unfiltered yummy goodness,
the whole thing is kevin's testament, his ouvr
I enjoy it. Not my favourite Melvins album because it's a side of them I'm not used to. Maybe if they released another record in this vein it would be easier to compare. I agree that it is Kevin's album. The bass on Let It All Be kills
Wait'll you here the Maggot!!!! You're in a for a treat!
when i saw the melvins with jello...... the melvins did a short set before jello came out.. fuck... they played pigs of the roman empire first...followed by the bloated pope then went into let it all be... David Scott Stone was filling in for them on this tour i guess.... he was using very nice effects on the set. he made let it all be sound like it was his own.
they also played AMAZON and Hooch. possibly another song i cant recall.
Dale works the drums in bootlicker too...gowd... he's an inspiration.

i'm with you, i believe that the maggot is a better album, maybe because it's less "chilled out", and i like that. (...i hate pink floyd)
maggot>bootlicker>crybaby
still, bootlicker is a great album.
oh and by the way, do you guys know if they play the second part to 'let it all be' (not the creepy buzz whispering/noise stuff) live anymore?
when i last saw them live, they only played the beginning which is terrible because the ending is so terrific and haunting.
and all the recordings i've heard live of this song only feature the first half.
The Bootlicker has some of the best stuff Melvins have ever done on it.
I agree with Maggot>Bootlicker, though...
It's still a great fucking album.

nightgoat.
to me, 'bootlicker' is one of those great "late-night" albums.....unexpected, even by Melvins standards....a companion to compliment the twilight zone silence during the wee small hours between darkness & dawn...timeless....listen thru headphones for added enjoyment...
Prig sounds like Mother by Pink FLoyd...
i always expect buzz to sing ".... mother are they gonna break... my balls."
Its one of their albums where they really flaunt their songcrafting, and since its not a noisy album per say, you can really hear everything.
a gem.
this album reminds me of all the calm songs/parts of Stag.
The Bootlicker is FUCKING GENIUS! One of the BEST Melvins records for sure.......The Maggot is FUCKING DEVASTATING! Crybaby was the weakest....which is saying something considering tracks like "Divorce" and "Mine Is No Disgrace". The tracks with Hank Williams the 3rd were fucking cool as well! I've got the trilogy on vinyl and these are hands down my most prized Melvins items....the picture vinyl are fucking beautiful and bold, even if they did leave out half the songs on the Crybaby!
I played the Bootlicker for a friend of mine (whose only heard the early years Melvins). She told me it was "fucking music". Looks like I have a mission now.
Wow, I started playing the Bootlicker for one of my girl friends, and she told me half way through Let It All Be that "this sounds like killing people music". More specifically, a stabbing. Needless to say, she didn't even make it to Black Santa.
Keep us updated, Doug.
I wanna see how this plays out...

WHAT! "Let It All Be" is fucking funky. I do think the LP is a ghostly funked up dub blues thing.....THIS is why it's one of my favs!
When Melvins came home to me 2002, I purchased everything with them I came over. In the beginning I only fancied the direct, brutal stuff, but in the recent time I`ve begun to appreciate more and more the "alternative" Melvins. (alternative to their own basic style) Bootlicker is the undisputed record from that category, and it`s currently on Schnabels car-stereo`s A-list. Let It All Be is the higlight for my part.
the end of prig is the SHIT!!
prig in it's entirety is "the shit".
not sure where norecess is coming from on this one.
Nigga, whaaaaa?
Prig, in it's entirety is genious.
Let It All Be is suuuch a good song live, but the version on bootlicker I think is too long and quiet.. it is one of my favorite live songs though and luckily they play it live A LOT so :)
Let It All Be is good live. but they skip off the 2nd half. i know it's a lot of hums and just sounds and then a song again. but they could do so much with that. and then when it goes back into the song. i don't know. i'm pissed they cut that half out live. have they ever done it in its entirety?
When I saw the Melvins a couple weeks ago, I bought Gluey Porch Treatments, (quite possibly the greatest album ever) and The Bootlicker and when my cousin took me home after the show I left The Bootlicker in his car, well I just got it back from him and spinning it now, Hopefuly this is awesome. I wanted to get something with Kevin on it. And something part of the "trilogy". What do you guys think of this album? I am psyched because I am still relatively new to the band and can listen to albums like bullhead with semi-fresh ears still. Anyways just got done with Black Santa and that was... different. It seems all their albums are very different.
bootlicker is a fuckin' classic. One album I can listen to anytime anyplace - nuff said.

Cool, happy i got it, because I bought it randomly without knowing anything about it. And I know they played Let it All Be live because alot of the crowd was singing the "the nature of my soul" part and the bass line cant be forgotten.
The Bootlicker is a great album. I can't see why anyone would hate it and that goes for people who don't like the Melvins. Then again, I don't see why anyone would hate the Melvins.
The Trilogy is great. The Maggot is the heavy album, The Bootlicker is the laid back album, and The Crybaby is more experimental with at least one guest musician on every song.
My assumption is that tou're gonna be highly dissapointed the first time you've heard it.

As u do with almost any melvins album until u listen to it again... and again.. and again... and again... and then it hits you - this is the greatest shit u've ever heard in ur life --> ur addicted!!!
The melvins are much better live.
jew boy flower heads my favorite track
I like it, It doesnt even sound like the same band. Completely different then anything I ever heard from them.
I always wondered if Jew Boy Flower Head was a knock on the Didjits guy.
They did after all have a song called Killboy Powerhead.

So did offspring off the album smash, I loved that cd when I was just a wee fucker.
I've been relistening the Trilogy today and I had forgotten how good Bootlicker actually is. I still like Maggot better though....and Snajdan, if you like Bootlicker you'll like the rest of their 25+ albums too so start saving 8)
Bootlicker may not be the best album to start off on The Melvins with, as it's completely different as a whole than any of their other albums. It's a great CD with killer basslines.
he did say GPT may be the best album ever.
i think he'll get along fine no matter which album he starts on :D
I love the Bootlicker and recommend that you get the Maggot and the Crybaby. The Trilogy is better as a whole.
I prefer the live version of Let It All Be to the studio version. The live version gives it a certain amount of muscle that is absent from the original.
"The way you take the muscle from the song and kind of swing it."

I do think of Christmas though for several reasons. But it sounds more like their Christmas album then Eggnog. That is if either one was even meant to be "Christmas" album. Which I doubt.
Funny. This album was the first Melvins I got....on Christmas! So I think that too.
classiest album by the melvins fo sho?
one of their most underrated albums
no doubt. one of my top three. its a good album to get melvi virgins into the gig.
I'm hoping to hear some of the Boot live real soon. If I don't, that's okay, cuz the guys don't disappoint.
As I live and experience life from the mind of a 5 year old, I think how painful it must be for others to have so much knowledge of how things really are at such an early age. My innocence is bliss, but the lessons are hard learned. Bootlicker seems to be written to the uncivilized worms on this earth. I always thought the big bullys on the playground grew up to be "good and nice grown-ups". Gee whiz what a myth. I love the slow songs, the hypnotic, meditative, in your face and take me to another planeground songs!!!

For some reason it's hard for me to compare the Maggot and the Bootlicker. I simply refuse to choose which one is the better one. The Bootlicker has this great, ominous, subtle atmosphere which I can't really describe and the Maggot brings the HEAVINESS. They're just two completely different masterpieces and without this contrast the trilogy wouldn't be as good. And yeah, then there is the Crybaby... I think I should give it a few more listens.
i dont understand the lack of love for the crybaby around these parts. some of the songs on it are gems. ie "mine is no disgrace" "spineless" and the majority of the rest of the album. the only track i ever skip on it is "smells like teen spirit" namely because i could go the rest of my life ithout hearing it or any versions of it ever again.
I agree, there are some really good tunes on it. one of my favorites is Divorced. I do listen to it now and then but not nearly as much as I listen to for example the Maggot or the Bootlicker.. I need to pay more attention to it.

+1
Of the Trilogy, I would say the Bootlicker gets the most play time followed by the Maggot. Even though it is really mellow, it is still an incredible album.
Have been listening to this lately. I must say that Bootlicker is a dandy gem of an album. Mellow and psychedelic. Not enough Bootlicker love around here.
I wonder if anyone here doesn't like the Bootlicker. It's a fantastic album.

Yes they did. I remember them playing it right after Set Me Straight/DCH and then during Let It All Be a mosh pit broke out behind me. I thought it was an odd time to start moshing.
"The fast song is over guys! Time to start moshing!"

Prig is like a Throbbing Gristle Tribute, and the Album on the whole reminds me of Pink Floyd bigtime.
I presume it was Dave Scott Stone who showed how to do the trademark TG * Dragging the Violin Bow Across the open String sounding like someone Dragging a filing cabinet down a huge Hallway.*
The best album to listen to really late at night, half asleep with headphones.
I was listening to the Bootlicker when my son was about two and a half. He found the album to be quite taxing, but when Prig came on, he turned and looked at me and started doing this MC Hammer dance. He had this shocked look on his face, like "gee dad, I didn't know you liked GOOD music!". That was pretty awesome. If you have young'ns try this, and report back to me. :P
I'd really like to hear The Bootlicker performed live. I could see it being epic as a late night set at a music festival. Obviously I am foolish and self indulgent but as we are in my fantasy land Kevin would return on bass as he would be essential to pull of this feat.
I saw them play a set similar to this level on the Maggot tour. They played The Green Manolishi and I seem to remember Tipping The Lion, June Bug and maybe Shevil.
They played this set and then Hovercraft came on. My friends split (they thought the Melvins were done). Then the Melvins came back for set 2 and rocked for about an hour and a half. D'oh!

It was killer. Had never heard Hovercraft before that night, so uh, I didn't

The Bootlicker is hands down one of the best Melvins releases. The originality and creativity of the songwriting is top-notch and I think the musicianship of Buzz, Dale and Kevin really shines. This and the Eggnog EP are in a constant battle for my favorite Melvins album, but lately this one has been my go-to.
