Title: anyone else get a WARPED LP at the merch table recently?
Post by: _istvan_ on June 08, 2010, 05:50:24 PM
i bought some swag last night at the houston show and i just got home from work this afternoon to open up my SEALED copy of NUDE WITH BOOTS to find the vinyl COMPLETELY warped.

not just a little bit here or there, but THE ENTIRE thing is warped in 3 different places, making it completely unlistenable.  before anyone accuses me of letting my vinyl get that way because i was drunk or because i took it in the  pit (neither things happened btw), i'd also like to add that the venue was air conditioned the entire time and that i brought my records straight home from the show and left them downstairs in an air conditioned house until this afternoon.

just wondering if i happened to have bad luck or if anyone else bought warped records recently?

They came warped from the factory, the initial edition, at least.  You might try contacting Ipecac.

i'll email them now and i guess i'll let everyone know what happens.  i'm kinda pissed, but it was only $10.  but still, if they know that that the additional batch of records were warped, then why bother selling them at shows? i heard that a bunch of copies of A SENILE ANIMAL were also warped.  what the hell is wrong with ipecac? letting that shit happen once is okay, but twice in a row? come on.

I got Nude With Boots on vinyl in San Diego...It was warped as expected but I've listened to it. It played just fine. Far from "completely unlistenable" though maybe your copy is worse?  :?

from all I gather, I don't think they press records as good as they used to for that matter.

I also hear that the European pressings were of higher quality, better grooves..all around more solid pressings, my Stag vinyl sounds like the right channel is totally dropped out all the way though the A side, I guess it was used and someone played it with a bum stylus or something, the B side is twice as loud for some reason, I dunno, the expression "they don't make em' like they used to" comes to mind.

anyway owning a vinyl of something that has gone through SOME form of digital processing at ANY point kind of defeats the whole Analog experiance for me, like death metal on vinyl, triggered bass drums at 33 and a half RPM kind of piss me off.

well, my ears aren't perfect, but I guess NWB mix on vinyl is pretty cool sounding at any rate.

I like the fact that stuff had to be mastered differently for vinyl Vs. digital, I wonder who pays for that?

the going rate for the last "true"  analog mastering in ontario was about 12 thousand for a days work, you can ask former members of "Jerrycan" about that job, They are now called "sinister Trailer park magic" if you are into prog sounding stuff!!!

It's interesting what Buzzo said about his mastering guy in that recent inerview, I concur with that, people don't know what they are doing these days.

there might be a way to make the warp "less" warped if you are skilled with a heat gun and some kind of material, like try ironing it between some heavy fabric, if it's ruined it's ruined, you can't make it worse than it already is...I'd try to De-warp it somehow.

but maybe like I said..people don't know what they are doing these days.

12k?  That can't be right.

I know what I heard straight from Jer's mouth, I will phone him tommorow and get the facts.

they made it a "left handed" record sleeve!

apparently it was one of the last analog mastering jobs in north america..but I don't know where to seperate fact from hype. let me give him a call.

the pressing was pretty shit, the Cd was amazing, but the record was pretty dead and dull sounding in comparisson, but 4 times fatter sounding for sure than the CD.

well, the first song on side a IS unlistenable for me because the warping is so out of control that there are multiple waves that make the needle skip ALL OVER and BETWEEN the first 2 grooves, hence = UNLISTENABLE.  i can take pictures if you need proof that i'm not just bitching about some minor aesthetic flaw.    i own enough vinyl to know when something is salvageable whenever there are minor warps but these are HUGE warps.  i contacted ipecac, don't expect a reply.  i'm just posting to see if anyone else got bum vinyl and apparently some others did, so i don't feel bad.. just unlucky.

what type of turntable or receiver are you using?

Try adjusting the skating all the way....if it's THAT warped, I'd write to ipecac, see what they can do?

I personally would look into finding a way to fix the warp before anything else.

other than that maybe you could make it into a cool clock?

here is what the warped side looks like when the rest of the vinyl is laid FLAT on the platter: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v625/istvanmatis/DSC00025.jpg (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v625/istvanmatis/DSC00025.jpg)

here is where you can see the additional warping on different sides: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v625/istvanmatis/DSC00022.jpg (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v625/istvanmatis/DSC00022.jpg)

this is to show just how high up the vinyl comes because of the warping.  this OBVIOUSLY makes the needle skip everywhere.  http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v625/istvanmatis/DSC00024.jpg (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v625/istvanmatis/DSC00024.jpg)

i've got plenty of other warped records that play just fine whenever i adjust the skating.. but that is not the case with this.

truth be told, my biggest problem is simply the fact that i bought BRAND NEW SEALED MERCHANDISE that is obviously inferior and damaged.  since something like this already happened with the SENILE ANIMAL lp pressing, i consider this a HUGE problem with ipecac's quality control... it is either that... or the melvins current merch person doesn't seem to understand that leaving boxes full of vinyl in a van all day long during a summer tour through the south will somehow affect the products inside.

that sounds like it might actually work!

hm, well you can sell it to me for 10 bucks no problem!

well put it in your car with two panes of glass in the sun for an hour and see if it helps any.

Yea, to me, it's ten bucks AND my first record that I've ever bought. (they aren't ALL this bad) So, I'm not tripping all that hard..but I understand your frustrations..and those pictures do look familiar to what I'm dealing with as well.

DO NOT DO THE GLASS THING !!  ...the Sun could damage the actual grooves & then it's beyond repair.

I had 2 warped copies and I fixed them...

1. find a flat surface.
2. place 12" piece of cardboard on said surface.
3. center your warped record,in it's paper inner sleeve, on cardboard & place another 12" piece of card board on that.
4. get a nice solid, flat piece of wood, about a 1/2 inch thick, that is at least 14"x14" and center it on top of that.
5. stack a shit load of the biggest books you can find on top of the wood, put the widest/longest books on first.
6. leave it for 4-5 weeks...no peeking.
7. remove all the stuff and enjoy your flat LP.
8.DO NOT put the record back in the Nude With Boots cover, cause it's most of the reason why it's warped in the first place.

I just put the cover in an LP bag & put the record in it's white sleeve behind it in the bag.

WOW! That is fucked up bad! Stop trying to play it, you will ruin your stylus and possibly your cartridge. You are best to try and contact ipecac for a replacement. Actually, I would try contacting their distributor. Ipecac probably won't do anything about it.

I know that small labels that handle their distro will usually handle it for you, no problem. Fat Wreck Chords is known for this.

yeah, JZS has the right idea, I knew there was SOMETHING can be done.

hehe, I was joking BTW (about the car thing)

I might try what JZS said to do with a couple a things I got.

wow, what a bunch of replies!

don't worry, i own plenty of vinyl, i know how to NOT fuck up my shit. i only listened to the lp for maybe 10 seconds and after the jump and skip that happened, i knew the warping was beyond repair.

i contacted ipecac, someone wrote me back and asked me about the label number (IPC-105 in case someone was wondering) and said he would get it all sorted out. we'll see what that means.

melvins vinyl seems to have bad luck with me.  i bought a copy of HONKY on wax a long time ago and that was slightly warped right out of the sleeve.  i had a copy of prick on wax as well, bought it used for $5 and it was fine.  i had all the HAT 7 inches too and those were more or less okay; some were a bit warped though, but nothing too bad.  it seems like 7 inches are harder to warp (or be as noticeable as 12' lps).

I haven't had any experience with the original Nude With Boots covers. Are they too large? Do you think a die-cut DJ sleeve would fit INSIDE the original jacket? You can get blank jackets fairly inexpensively here:

http://www.sleevetown.com/LP-jackets.shtml (http://www.sleevetown.com/LP-jackets.shtml)

I also recommend these if the jacket is regular size, but just shitty lightweight paper stock:

http://www.bagsunlimited.com/cart/detail.asp?cat=2&subcat=23&product_id=klpic (http://www.bagsunlimited.com/cart/detail.asp?cat=2&subcat=23&product_id=klpic)

Around 1.25 shipped and you've gotta order at least 5. I keep all my "good" vinyl in these, then in the original jackets. Of course with a high-quality inner sleeve as well. I recommend Disckeeper Ultimates or Mobile Fidelity sleeves.

No, it wouldn't fit, the NWB jackets are a lighter stock & the vinyl is pretty thin too.....so, I think what happened to 'em was, they were all damaged when they were shrink/shrunk wrapped too tight.....I don't know that's my theory.

It's a decent theory. I recommend the inner support board and a good set of protective plastics. After you flatten it of course.

Ouch, I got one of these too.  I should have taken the hint when the woman selling the merch warned me that some were warped and, while they thought they'd gotten rid of the warped ones, I was buying at my own risk.

Hey, I never said I was smart.  I was so overjoyed to get the A Senile Animal box for $20 that I wasn't too worried about it.

Yep, if I'd got the ASA box set for $20 I'd have probably lost consciousness and followed through! You did bloody well!

(joking about the ebay bit)

my copy almost sounds like a vintage record from the 60s, it's REALLY wierd.

Clean it. You should ALWAYS clean a record before playing it. Even if it is brand new out of the wrapper.

it's a more noticeable warp than i imagined...a spindle clamp might do well here.

side 1 played fine, but the 1st song of side 2 skipped...and the recording definitely sounded thin.
