well, last night my bandmate phoned me up out of the blue and told me his sources said that the melvins are playing the opera house in Toronto, I haven't checked current dates on this site, but is this more than just rumor?
do I really need a change of underwear yet?
It's true. It's up on The Opera House's site. Tickets went on sale yesterday.
I have my ticket. 8)

life is good!
i can't remember if you're a torontonian or not, but you can grab tickets at soundscapes if you want to avoid the ritual sodomizing that ticketbastard gives you...
Fuckin' A!! It's only been like 10yrs! Damn this shit is gonna be sweet ... Oprea House is a great venue ... Oh Hell Yeah! This is a good day!
i would have personally preferred lee's or the mod club, but thank christ it's not that guvernment shithole like in 2000.
no matter what, melvins in toronto again is a cause for celebration!

What he said.
I'm coming down from Montreal to make this show, that's the only reason I bought my tix through ticketbastard.
A hoser themelvins.net meetup is in order. The Cond better make an appearence!
Yeah Lee's would be cool too ... gonna see JSBX there this Sat. Yup, the Guvernment blows ... been a while (like 5yrs. at least) since I've seen a show at Oprea House ... I dig the Oprea House ... a little run down, kinda chill, kinda just outta the hipster vortex that is Queen West
So, I wasn't aware of any tour dates till Sept. 15th ... and now way off the beaten track of that west coast tour, a show in Toronto Sept. 1? What's the cause? Are there other dates round the begining of Sept. in the vicinity (other than the AM REP thing which really isn't in the vicinity)? Canada, USA ... makes no dif. but if there is some more dates I feel a road trip coming on!
i guess they were offered a tonne of $$$ to do that festival in quebec and decided to squeeze this date in...
Good stuff! I can hardly contain my exitement!!!!
SWEET JOHNNY!
I'll see you guys there, I'll bring Extra green in case I bump into you guys (we need a secret call sign), and also a 44 Beretta in case my ex tries to "bump" into me there!~
I might have to wear a disguise.
This is some GREAT NEWS!!! I'm going to make sure I as many people as I can to show, hopefully I can get a few dozen to show.
I haven't been hanging with my hometown crew for a few years, but I got them all into the melvins for sure!
:toke:

Oh I will be there! You better have some good dope too, cuz I'm willing
to fall off the wagon for this one monumental night!!!! I will be in my
melvins.net "fleazy rider" shirt.
Would be great if there's also a Buffalo or Rochester show that week. Shellac's in Buffalo the 2nd. Would be beyond sick to see Melvins and Shellac in the same week. I don't bother with southern Ont for shows period. You have a great country up there, but I can't be bothered with border hassles and insane traffic. All the good shows that miss upstate NY, I usually catch in Cleveland instead.

three cheers for conda. its been awhile, hasn't it?
'97 dude!! except for seeing buzz with Fantomas a few years back
but that doesn't count because Patton is a fucking hack!
how fucking cool for you?
this has got me all warm and fuzzy. or perhaps that was the wagon I fell off. either way. you have GOT to be geeked.
:D
Conda, I totally saw that Fantomas gig too...
um, so what's the details, I will look it up when I buy the ticket, but who's got the DL on all the facts for this specific show?
just the same that is.
I think we should all meet up before the show at Dangerous Dan's for
a few of their 'coronary' burgers. It's a two minute walk from the venue
and their all-beef half pounders loaded with the works are damn tasty.
http://www.dangerousdansdiner.com/ (http://www.dangerousdansdiner.com/)
who knows, we might even bump into Dale or Buzz chowing down.
I'm down. 8)
Never been, sounds tasty though. What about Jilly's? ha ha ha!! For all the times I've gone to the Oprea House over the yrs. I've always wondered 'bout that joint ... seems pretty greasy.
geez dude, if toothless, cellulite and crack addicted is your scene then thats the
peeler bar for you, god it's horrible, the only good thing about jilly's is
the $3 a pitcher domestic beer special on thursdays.
jilly's is pretty nasty. my friend had a birthday party there after his band played Oprah's and i think I took two showers after I got home.
Real Jerk!!
you know what, the real jerk would be good too! damn i forgot about that place.
I can finally be one with the universe.

Toothless? That nails it! Yeah, that's 'bout what I expected it would be like ... though sometimes "horrible" can get pretty funny ... Real Jerk is always a good idea.
Grabbed my tix the other day ... hot off the presses I guess ... got tix no. 1,2,3 & 4. Pretty cool!

Hello. The most commonly misspelled word in English is 'misspelled', apparently. I wish I lived in Toronto. If I did, I wouldn't have to wait until next year to see them again.
i just got my ticket today! :D Does anyone know who they are playing with? it just says with guests?
Brothers of the sonic cloth would blow my mind?!?!?!?!?
oh heck who am i kidding . that would never happen espcially in toronto, not to diss toronto or anything, its just that canada doesen't really get crazy shit like that happening , know what i mean?
I'll be at the venue by 7pm or maybe even earlier. I'm looking to meet up with
Manwith, Mount Ambulance, Greasy Statement and Dumpster D. I'll be in this shirt:

Rock on
Well, it seems that I have an extra ticket now. My wife was going to attend
the show but due to a re-scheduling at work she has a shift that night.
I'm willing to sell the ticket at face value. If anyone has a friend who needs
a ticket we can make the transaction before the show. Cash only.
i might have a friend anaconda. i'll let you know for sure after he checks at soundscapes again...
Cool, just PM me. If I don't hear by the weekend I'm putting it on Craig's
I can't make the show. :(
I'll see them here in Montreal on Friday.

Smart guy ... I just returned to work after a month of vacation ... Wow! Did that suck! I'm takin' off early tomorrow though ... unfortunately no one else is though! So we're not gonna get there earlier than doors I doubt ... still a meet n' greet somewhere? Jillys'? If we get there earlier than doors I'd pop by ... If not I'll be on the look out for your tee 'Conda ... What will I be in? Armani probaby, mabey Hugo Boss? I don't know! I'll probably have a Cuban army hat on? See ya there!
ahh, all my friends are knobs so I am lonering it up tomorrow evening. I shall have plenty of erb if anybody cares to spark? I'll probably be wearing a tom waits shirt. Anyone else gotta make it back to union?
I need a cheap ticket for this show (10-15 dollars)... if anyone could help that would be great. Please call or text 647-818-5446 ASAP Thanks, God bless
Thrones are coming to Toronto aswell I see
i'll be looking for the tom waits shirt phil, tonight's the night!!!!! ya baby!!!

say 'high' http://thesickos.free.fr/sniv.jpg (http://thesickos.free.fr/sniv.jpg)
p.s. someone help stoney out! i spoke to him on the phone, he sounds like a good soul
Even the fact that I just had appendicitis and only got out of the hospital yesterday can't stop me from going to this show! It's too bad I won't be able to get in the crowd or anything, sitting at a Melvins show will feel wrong but it's better than nothing! Any ideas about who's opening? Have they had openers in other towns on this tour?
no mention yet, but i was thinking maybe Fucked Up or Sons of Otis would be a good pairing
My buddy picked up a ticket yesterday and the guy at Rotate This told him there were no openers and Melvins would be onstage at 9pm sharp! Says guests on the ticket but I'm not chancing it ... showing up for doors. Fucked Up opening would be cool thou.
big business should open , they havent played around here for a while last time i think was with tool in 06, i seen em at copps in hamilton.
two words: Fucking Amazing!! :D :D :D :D
Review to follow when I sober up
how long was the set?
Same set list?
Did they start off with Buzz and Dale playing alone?
DETAILS! I WANT DETAILS!
MONTREAL TOMORROW YE!
WOW!!!!!!!!! thats all for now
alright fuckers. this vague "holy crap" and "it was awesome" shit ain't going to cut it.
daddy wants details.
Wow Really? All I gots to say is: Fuck The Opera House! Fuckin' Clowns!
I'll post a review after work ... a brief detail for ManWith ... Okie From Muskgogee absolutely killed ... so did Bacon Industry/Night Goat pairing ...
Yah, mind-blowing show. Especially for a Toronto resident who has been waiting 10 years to see them. Just divine.
I'm terrible with set-lists, I'm sure someone could fill it in. But they played a few songs that surprised me (i.e. different from the recent tour), like Sky Pup and Okee From Muskokee (by Merle Haggard, btw).
Did anyone take any pictures? Video? Audio?
there was no opener, doors at 8, melvins came on just before 10 starting with the water glass. It was the perfect mood setter to begin the utter amazingness. My apologies but i don't remember the order of tunes very well but they played: evil new war god, AMAZON was by far one the heaviest things i've ever witnessed, pig house, the talking horse, sky pup, the kicking machine, civilised worm, set me straight, oven with Jared doing lead, black stooges blew my mind, sacrifice had great atmosphere and was my personal highlight, billy fish, black bock where crover was rapin the chipmunk effect, electric flower, night goat was perhaps the most disgusting thing i've heard., bacon industry, also some other cover i was not familiair with. They may of played You've never been right...i might be on glue though. There was an utter drum duet where jared was playing with his delay pedal, and for the finale cody and dale stood on their kits and the 4 of them ripped genious harmonies for a very much slowed down okie.
again i apologize, hopefully someone remembered the actual order of songs. It was so nonstop itwas hard to pull it all in. Certainly tied with claypool for my fav show yet. search melvins opera house on youtube.
i thought they coverd the ramones, and i have never heard bacon industry , what is it from? i tried to get a set list from a roadie but thet gave them to other people, oven and amazon blew my mind!!! buzz was amazing on sacrifice, damn i'll still cant think i only got 1 hr of sleep had to work at 5am till 3pm .
bacon industry is a karp song off of self titled lp.
Did they not bring merch like last trip to Kanada?
i couldn't have been more happy with the show. i admit i've been a bit more spoiled than a lot of torontonians since i've been taking road trips to buffalo and detroit for 4 years or so, but it was amazing to see them kill it somewhere within streetcar distance from my house. i heard a few people grouse about them playing a 90 minute set, like the band "owes it to us", since it's been 10 years, but whatever. that 90 minutes was proof of an unfuckable with band. it was great to see a much better turnout than their last visit and the level of enthusiasm during the show and in the post show call for encores was encouraging, especially given toronto music fans reputation for apathy. i could have done without the pointless barricade, the two retards push moshing in front of me and getting whipped by the nasty dreads of some early 90's holdover, but those are all minor inconveniences. all i hope is that this becomes a regular tour stop once again...
review of show on Torontoist:
http://torontoist.com/2010/09/the_melvins_demolish_toronto_after_ten_year_hiatus.php (http://torontoist.com/2010/09/the_melvins_demolish_toronto_after_ten_year_hiatus.php)
Thanks, sounded cool, a little tweaking to the set list is always welcomed!
WHAT A SHOW!!!!
Here's my take on the day and the evening.
I get to the venue around 7pm, start chatting with the one other person there,
a guy named Luke. I have a 2 litre bottle of cider with me so I share it with him,
topping up his empty Arizona Ice Tea can a few times etc, and lo and behold
out of the blue we hear 'The Water Glass', then 'Night Goat', we both look at
each other stunned!! We're at the venue just as the band have started their
soundcheck!!! We get to see the band soundcheck about 6 or 7 songs for the
next 40 mins!!! Each of us taking turns peering through these glass doors that
line the front of the venue. The sound is as clear as day! Awesomeness!!
Shortly thereafter a dude in a tom waits shirt walks up and recognizes
my board shirt, I recognize his. He's a member from the board who
goes by 'fishheadphil'. We exchange hellos, talk about the show, how
amazing it's going to be, then him, myself and luke stroll around the corner
to continue drinking and chatting and 'phil' gets me stoned! thanks for the
green. As we share some booze and green a trio of misfits from Sarnia roll up
and offer us all a few tokes from their cigar sized joint, I don't know what
was in it but I got instantly uber stoned.
We all sort of realize a line is forming so we all get in line and continue shooting the
breeze, talking about the show, looking at our tickets and making sure that
they're still there in our hands for the amazing experience we are about to have.
Around this time a goateed cat and a few friends of his walks by the line and he
says 'anaconda?' I say yes sir, and I've met my second memeber of the night who's on
this board. He goes by the name 'flutter nuts' but I call him flutter cuz it's weird saying
'nuts' to another dude. lol. Anyways, we let him and his friends cut in line with us, I say
no board member is going to the back of the line on my watch!! So we chat a bit and finally
the line starts moving, after about 20 mins or so we're in the venue.
At this point I head straight to the railing at the front of the stage, I want to get a good view
so I'm jostling a little bit with this one guy but then we both realize, hey we smoked a joint earlier!!
it's one of the guys from Sarnia!! I give him a $20 bill and say go get us some alcohol and I'll
hold your place here on the railing...normally i dont hand my money to strangers but he came back
a few minutes later with a couple beers for each of us. I think his name was Mike, if you're reading this,
thanks for the amazing joint you smoked with me.
By this time the place is filling up almost to capacity, people are starting to get rowdy in anticipation,
it's about 9:30 and some of us have been drinking and smoking for a couple hours now, a few people
start chanting 'melvins, melvins', i chant 'buzz ... buzz ... buzz!!!!' A dickhead security guard warns me
to cool down, I say 'it's been over 10 years man!!! i'm excited!!! he loosens his grip on my arm and shoves
off with a grin, later this same dickhead removed me from the railing at the front and
escorted me to the back of the venue 'to mellow down' as he put it. Under my breath I'm saying fuck you,
but out of my mouth comes yes sir, sir. Fucking goons need to lighten up a bit. Anyways, I mellowed down
for all of 30 secs until I was out of his sight and I headed straight for the railing again!
It's about 9:45 and the crowd is beginning to realize that there will be no opener for this show,
we all start thinking double set?? melvins lite?? etc. Then amidst all the chatter and chanting
some piped in theme music is playing over the PA, and finally....the Melvins take the stage!!!!
They played a vast collection of songs with every member visibly giving 110%! Buzz was a joy
to watch, the man is hands down my favorite guitarist. Another thing that really stood out for
me is how amazing dale and coady are together!! The melvins can never go back to having one
drummer, the air that they were pushing was awesome
Ha, great review, thanks!
Yes, great review. I guess after 10 years of them not playing Toronto, you were too excited to put it in the show reviews part of this forum. I certainly understand, seeing the Melvins does that to folk.
It is true, no merch. :( .... great review anaconda. you're right about that joint being something hefty i was coughing from the testicles.
Sweet, some of the "Nut-cough" stuff. :toke:
Yeah, great review
sacrifice!! i knew i was forgetting one!! i was looking for you mount ambulance,
but then I realized i don't know what you look like!! hahahaha so I started to
scope the crowd for someone who looked like they might fit the username
'mount ambulance' HAHAHAHAHAA..I was also hoping to see greasy
somewhere in the crowd, i'd seen his pic but i didn't see you in the crowd matt.
hopefully we can connect next time
and yes, the security goon walked me to the back of the club and had me sit down
for a 'time out' because i was yelling... if it hadn't of happened to me I wouldnt
believe it myself!!! Great club. Great show, but obnoxious security goofs.
Anyone remember what they played after Pinhead? I was sayin' to my buddies that I love how the Melvins bust so many covers ... last night alone (Sacrifice, Pinhead, Deserted Cities, Okie, Bacon Industry) often making them their own ... I mean I probably actually associate Sacrifice w/ Melvins more than Flipper! And Ballad of Dwight Fry/Halo of Flies ... I mean the Coop originals are untouchable ... though by this time in history the Melvins kinda own 'em. I mean I have no intrest ever hearing Coop do those tunes today, ya know?
Then my buddy sprays comedy gold asking if the tune after Pinhead was a Megadeth cover ... I was pissing myself ... but he was actually serious. I couldn't remember what it was but yeah definately not Megadeth!

Yeah, I don't even know where the hell that handle came from ... I'm always a little disturbed when people don't look like their avatar ... just kinda becomes their face, ya know? Completely flips my wig everytime I see Glen and realize he actually doesn't look like Nelson C. Reilly!

yeah, i was scanning the crowd looking for the shirt. i figured you were likely up close. me and mrs. statement were stage left enjoying the rock. she had a good view of her boyfriend,(mr. warren), so i presume she was happy, heh. talked to the always lovely big jim for a couple of minutes, then made a break for the floor. snapped some shitty photos, then stopped caring and rocked out.
mount ambulance-i think the actual set time was 1 hour 20 minutes, but that's semantics. they crammed a tonne of shit into that time and it was just right. i'm admittedly the type that's not in for the marathon type shows.
i noticed buzz broke a string before night goat, so that made for a bit of an extended bass intro. a perfect "happy accident" as it built up the pure menace of that song.
oprah's security have always been a bunch of goons. they were chimps in the early 90's and that's continued ever since. HATE that fucking venue. it's a nice place aesthetically, but always run in a completely asinine fashion. i hated playing there when i was in bands, since they treated locals like shit.
Yeah, saw alota shows back in the 90's at that place ... come to think of it the only other time I've ever been pinched was there at NMN if I rembember ... 93? I'd have to look at stubs to be sure. What bands did you play in?
my earlier complaints about security aside, there was one point last night that i was kind of appreciative. mid way through some lug nut UFC wannabe in a down shirt came plowing up to the front, almost knocking my wife on her ass. 2 seconds later he was tapped on the shoulder by a security guy who made him leave that area and follow him to the back. i don't think they kicked him out, but i'm glad they got him out of there. i hate it when dickheads push in some ape like manner to get near the front and stand there like macho pricks.
i was in a band called demonbarf that played there a couple of times in '92 and then a band called studenyatz that played there in '95. all three were horrible experiences...
yeah that guy in the down shirt was a dickhead , he was one of thoes guys who really isent there to see the show but just to act like a asshole, " look at me im big and dumb and can push people around when there not looking" moshing is fine but he was just being a dick to everyone, him and his buddy in the white shirt with glasses, he grab/clawed my face so i shoved him into some guys who were moshing and he got someones head in his face ,looked like it hurt, fucking shithead!
nothing could ruin that night
p.s thanks phil for passing me a joint during the show! i was looking for you after the show, we could have gave you a ride close to union , hope you made it there alright
no problemo flutter, and i appreciate the thought. I walked to union and just made the last train. I needed a long walk after that show just to try and conceive what had just happened. melvins happened . and it was glorious.
