Title: What are your top 5 favorite Melvins albums
Post by: Wendal on August 26, 2010, 02:26:22 AM
I am a fairly new Melvins fan. Got in to them mainly thru Fantomas.

So far, I have four Melvins albums: Houdini, Bride Screamed Murder, Senile Animal, and Nude With Boots.

I do not like every single song on any of these albums, but the ones I like I dont just like I LOVE.

Please name your top five favorite Melvins albums. Where do I go from here in terms of albums to get next?

Get Stoner Witch. Listen to it over and over again until you completely understand it.

Then get all the other Melvins releases.

Except Stoner Witch or Lysol for Maggot. Maggot was heavy, but a lot of songs went nowhere.

Ill try and help you here. Houdini, Senile animal, Bride screamed murder are 4 of the Melvins most straight foeward titles. If you like those your next step should be Stoner Witch and Hostile Ambient Takeover.

I'll try to categorize most of the albums for you. I hate categorizing, but im trying to do this if i were introducing Melvins to a stranger. I might put some albums into 2 categories.

Straight-forward Melvins albums (Albums on the whole that have a mainstream feel with none to low experimentation)
-Houdini
-Stoner Witch
-Hostile Ambient Takeover
-A senile animal
-Nude with boots
-Bride screamed murder

Dark, Sludgey, Heavy riffs and drums (Best listened too VERY LOUDLY)
-Ozma
-Bullhead
-Lysol
-Eggnog
-Houdini
-Stoner Witch

Fast riffs, Punk feel, early Melvins
-Gluey Porch Treatments
-Ozma
-Mangled Demos

Moderately experimental Albums (Melvins at heart but with a different taste)
-Stag
-The Maggot
-King Buzzo, Dale Crover, Joe Preston EP's

Very experimental albums. You will learn to like these or hate these. They take a lot of time. Its possible to like only some parts and dislike the other parts. Heavy synth and electro on Honky, Electroretard, Pigs, Colossus
-Honky
-Prick
-The Bootlicker
-The crybaby
-Electroretard
-Pigs of the Roman Empire
-Colossus of Destiny

hope this helps

My top 10:
Lysol
Bullhead
Houdini
Stoner Witch
Senile
Nude
Eggnog
Gluey
Ozma
Hostile Ambient Takeover

They're an awesome band, awesome live and with fantastic songs too yet - for me at least - somehow they have never really made an all out, flat out super masterpiece record . . . one of the things that struck me was that they dont have a stinker record, every single one had quality. Mind you that was before i heard COD!  :?

Melvins never made an all out, flat out super masterpiece record? No offence but did your Moms drop you on your head as an infant? That's just crazy talk kid! I can think of several I'd list as all out, flat out super super duper masterpiece records.

So, just outta intrest then, what records by whom would you class as all out, flat out, super masterpiece records?

Hey settle down guys!!  :) Im not saying the albums aren't great, they're usually stuffed full of awesome tunes its just for MY tastes i always find the odd one or perhaps two songs that (again) for ME as marvellous as they are dont really quite do it. As i would term it, for a record to be a truely remarkable not even half a poor song should be present! I guess i just have really, stupidly high standards to declare something as utterly great. As for which bands/albums are masterpieces i would answer very, very, very few are however i would definitely single out both 'Variations On A Theme' and 'Pilgrimage' by Om as releases that reach the nesessary high water mark test. You're certainly welcome to disagree with me on this tho.

Thanks for all the info guys. Yeah, you could say I like the more less experimental straight forward stuff so far.

My favorite tracks so far are:

A History of Bad Men
Kicking Machine
Honey Bucket
Hooch
I'll Finish  You Off
Electric flower
Hospital Up
Civilized Worm

As I said, I dont dig every single song on my first four albums so far. In fact I skip most of em but the ones I like I really LOVE cause they rock! I might just get all the albums one by one. Maggot may be next.

How did you get into the rockin' Melvins over the experimental songs if you started with Fantomas? Whenever I want to piss someone off, I just put on Delirium Cordia.

Also, my top 5:
Lysol
HAT
Bullhead
Bootlicker
A Senile Animal

Bleach

Nirvana-the best of....just when i feel like hearing a little of everything from sucha great band in once convenient compact disc

sometimes I just listen to nevermind over and over again in the fetal position, sucking my thumb while thinking about how the world is a very serious place.

Just curious, Mr. (((O))), what would be your favourite Melvins album, and what would be the part(s) of that album that you didn't like?
I''ll answer both those points!

First up its difficult to say which record is best, however if pushed i'd probably say Houdini Live. It doesn't have all my upmost favourite Melvins songs on there (for the sake of mentioning The Bloated Pope is probably my favourite ever) but it is very consistent. The advantage that i feel that this record has over all the other ones is the fact that it is a live recording. As we all know Melvins are one of those bands that are excellent live and more often than not the live renditions of studio material are superior to their studio counterparts both in dynamism and performance. This is certainly the case here as it totally trumps the original being much rawer, better produced and the songs breathe with that familar boisterous, energetic live feel we all love. Nowadays i never even touch my copy of the '93 studio record its all about this live translation that has me hooked. If only all their records were recorded live and they released similar live versions of all the past records. Now that would really be something to marvel at indeed. A Bullhead Live or Lysol Live would be AMAZING!

As regards which parts of the record i find hold it back it does come down to rather nitpicky elements. Since i feel this is the best release there is actually very little in the way of negatives to speak of nevertheless they are there. Essentially (and again) i feel i have to reiteriate FOR ME its simply a matter of Spread Eagle Beagle being too long and inconclusive as a concluding track. Length of song isn't something that bothers me, afterall POTRE is one of my fav songs by them. I simply just wish that Spread... was perhaps more in tune with what else is there. Its nice to have contrast of course also ebb and flow but it dosent quite culminate things together and feels too insular - whatever i mean by that! I know that sounds ridiculous but for me little things like that really do affect how i feel about a particular album. Hope that explains a little.

I love Fantomas but can only handle them in small doses. For the most part I like music that's a bit more straight foward. But then againsome of my favorite tunes have been pretty experimental sounding, it really all depends on how it's pulled off. I might appreciate the experimentation of Fantomas more so than a band like Melvins. At the end of the day, if it sounds good then it sounds good.

Lysol really isn't that great. That Chickenswitch remix makes the original Hung Bunny/Roman Dog Bird sound kind of weak and irrelavent and I've come to think that Sacrifice sounds better with less heavy metal guitar an played a bit faster. It's GOOD, mind you, and I can see how it's been very influential to the whole drone scene and whatnot, it just sounds a little dreary and "bonehead heavy" compared to stuff that came before and after. I think Eggnog->Lysol->Solo Albums->Houdini is kind of the worst run of Melvins output. It's still GOOD though, just not as super delightful as almost everything else they've put out.

Ok, so I just picked up Maggot today and was very impressed. Actually, I had this album around ten years ago when it was first released but my car got broken in to and all my cds were stolen. Back then wasnt that big of a fan, just casual. I definitely like this album a lot more now then back then. Particularly 'See How Pretty, See How Smart', and We All Love Judy. That shit just rocks the house.

Just to recap-Behold,  I now have the following albums:

Nude With Boots
A Senile Animal
Maggot
Bride Screamed Murder
Houdini

Question is, where do I go from here? Should I go ahead and get the other two albums from the Maggot series, or should I jump to a different one?

I would definitely get The Bootlicker, Stoner Witch, and Lysol. Three VERY different albums that show their creative diversity. Then get Stag, very all over the place. Very good album.

Should I go ahead and get the other two albums from the Maggot series?
The answer is a resounding yes certainly get 'The Bootlicker'. Which is the second in the trilogy and although very different its probably one of their best releases IMO. Its not 'rockin' (so to speak) AT ALL like the others and is actually quite chilled out, yet still groovy. If that isnt incentive enough it has 'Let It All Be' on there!! Not too sure about recommending the third trilogy album 'The Crybaby' to ya tho.

If 'Bootlicker' doesnt sound like your cup of tea then make sure to get 'Hostile Ambient Takeover' next. Most fans rate that as one of the very best and quite rightly so. Its got a few traditional Melvin rockers on there and a few really cool epic long tunes that should not go unnoticed.

Question is, where do I go from here? Should I go ahead and get the other two albums from the Maggot series, or should I jump to a different one?

In all seriousness just pick any of them and keep listening to it until it clicks.  If you want to finish The Trilogy that's a pretty good path too.  The Bootlicker is kind of laid back and shows their creative diversity a bit more.  The Crybaby is a mix of covers and originals and has a different guest singer on each song.  It's great but you may want to wait a little while to get that one.

somehow they have never really made an all out, flat out super masterpiece record.

Go sit in your room and think about what you've said. We'll call you when we've decided what to do with you. And don't get any hopes up of going out with your friends this weekend.

( :))

Wrong. Stag and HAT are masterpeices.

I think I'm more surprised by the Nude With Boots love.  I mean I've always thought it was one of their best but it seems like there was a ton of bitching about it until Bride came out.

Honky is pure genius. I felt terrible leaving that out.
I think it's safe to say it's their most unusual record, and that's saying a lot!!
