Poll
Question:
Who do you respect most?
Option 1: Buzz
votes: 15
Option 2: Dale
votes: 15
I be wondering lately which main Melvin i most respect, be it for musical purposes or plan badass-ery. Anyway i know its not cool to single out one of them at the expense of the other but heck thats what im gonna do. I would include Jared and Coady and past members too but i just wanna see what happens when its all about the big two. For me Dale is that little bit more cooler and awesome than Buzzo. I cant really explain why he just is. Buzzo shouldnt be the only King, we should have a King Dale also. So how bout you's? Dont go with any of that "oh i just cant choose" cop out s*** either or there'll be dreaded consequences in the form of 3am beatings while your tucked up 'safely' in bed!!! :x Get clickin'.
Buzz writes the songs and puts out those great interviews we all know and love; especially the classic vinney one where he explained how the dinosaurs became extinct.
Probably the worst poll ever?
Buzz.
"You don't vote for kings!"
As a drummer, I'd have to say Dale. He's a fucking innovator of double bass and massive tom flams....
I picked Buzz because spending your youth living around a bunch of podunks is bad enough -- only they didn't have the internet in the early '80s which made things much worse in some ways. Buzz wrote most of the Melvins songs (though Dale wrote some of my favorites by them). Buzz doesn't get to ride to fame by looking "sexy" by the mainstream's opinion... he's got a big silly afro! He practically invented several styles of music, is a hard worker, didn't get the cushion of being encouraged by his parents to pursue his musical career like Dale did, took Kurt Cobain to his first punk show, kept the band going even in their early years when most people hated them, survived a horrible tour but kept on going, did heroin and didn't get addicted, amazing songwriter, amazing lyricist, never sold out, has more of a spine than anybody here, totally picked himself up out of the shithole he grew up in and did something different with his life, and he's STILL DOING IT! But Dale is awesome, too.
Buzz, since he started the band. Dale, cuz he turned 4/4 on it's head. Buzz, cuz he killed Kurt.
WTF ? Put the crack pipe down motherfucker !
(Not You Conda)
I knew.
DALE FUCKIN CROVER
i vote for THE MELVINS!
It's a hard decision. King Assram hisself or Bendover Crover? :-k
I think I'll go with Dale because he always shows what real passion is about.

50% for both of them now. I hope it stay this way. :o
I could vote and break the tie. but I wont. HAHAHA
why isnt there a kurt cobain option? everyone knows he was the best melvin. he even came up with the band name the melvins.
allow me to pose this question:
do you think buzz and/or dale would continue to be a professional musician if the other were to "retire"?
I say if buzz were the last man standing then yes. if dale were the last man standing then no.
I have absolutely no reasoning behind that.

In a way i would say the opposite. I do think they would both continue on whoever was last around tho. Certainly if Buzz called it quits today im positive that Dale would still drum in Shrinebuilder, Porn, The Warlock Pinchers, maybe some Big Business gigs and quite possibly be more active with Altamont. Equally if Dale retired i think Buzz would still continue in the Melvins with Jared and Coady. Maybe we'ed see him solo more often like that guitar scuzz thing he's doing soon. Its only a guess but i'd bet that they're both in this for life, or at least as long as health permits.

yeah kurt suggested it. Kurt ran to buzzos house very late one night, banging on his door and throwing pebbles at his bedroom window until buzz woke up. before telling buzz the awesome idea for a band name kurt offered buzz several cupcakes as an apology for waking him up so late. then they drank lukewarm tea with cream and biscuits until kurt remember why he went all the way to buzz's house in the first place.

He absolutely could! Coady is extremely talented.
I don't want to see Dale go but
if Dale ever quit I could picture Buzz going on with Coady and Jared. It would still rule.
QuoteHe absolutely could! Coady is extremely talented.
Possibly, but at the end of the day he'd be only imitating Dale and that's all it would be. I guess unless like with Bassists they bring their own unique sound. But I hate the idea of Dale not being apart of the Melvins. Shit idea!
it's all moot, since buzz and dale aren't dying anytime soon. plus, they'll be playing together
even when they're both old fucks just like all the jazz guys do. I even predict that when they're
both so old that they can't play their respective instruments anymore we'll see them collaborating
on synths like they did on electroretard. time to lock this thread.

There's certainly truth to that statement.
Lukin and Black were how long in the band? Lukin 1 year, Black 2 or 3 years? Dale is a member since 1984 - you could say he was in it right from the beginning! His drumming formed the Melvins sound as we know it today. I stand by my earlier stated opinion: Replacing him with somebody else, even Coady, would just be wrong.
Yeah totally but if Dale just could not, or would not play with them anymore it would obviously be much more favourable to see a three piece Melvins with Coady on drums alone or any other possible permutation than no Melvins at all. Anyway no more Dale V Coady talk they BOTH rock and here's the proof if you should even need to be told.

Look, it's common knowledge that a band is as good as their drummer.......not their bass player, I'm saying this as a bass player. You can replace a decent bass player. It's waaaaay harder to replace a great drummer. So, the joke...the joke is that comparing Lukin's bass playing to Crover's drumming is like comparing a cold turd to chocolate mousse.
So, yes, it would not be the same without Crover, but it would be about a thousand times more noticeable, as far as the sound of the band, than a bassist change. Seems to me that all of the current members of the Melvins are doing as many projects as they can , not dropping them........but whadda I know ? Just my two cents.

The ultra important message board question that we're all debating over is, "Is it possible for the Melvins to go on without Dale?" I think so. Why not? We've seen Coady play along with Dale.
Or how about this. Let's say Dale got the flu before their next tour. Dale gave his blessing and they played all the shows as a three peice; Buzz, Jared, and Coady. Would you not go to the show? Do you think it would suck horribly and have no artistic merit at all?
I'd go, probably love the hell out of it, and miss Dale at the same time.
I have to go with Buzz, because I am a completely superficial person who judges people only on thier personal appearance and I have to give credit where credit is do re: Buzz's do. It is the greatest rock n roll trademark since the guy in AC/DC started dressing like a schoolboy. It is an international symbol known the world over that needs no translation.
