Yes, it appears so. One of our stringers in the UK has found out it's a bootleg
put out by the same guy who did the making love demos and cover songs LPs.

only the anrep version is official. about 10 years ago houdini has already been bootlegged in germany.
differences to the amrep version:
slip-in cover instead of a gatefold
spread  eagle beagle as last track instead of  rocket reducer

So because it's a bootleg it's somehow less worthwhile than an official copy?
Title: Re: Houdini out on red vinyl according to Rough Trade
Post by: John Schuller on July 25, 2011, 11:11:00 PM
Yes indeed it would be sir. I am sure it is not mastered for vinyl seeing as it is coming from what would most likely be a CD source. On top of that NOT A DIME would be going to Melvins, Gene Simmons, HAZE XXL or Atlantic Records. At least they got paid for the original version released in 93.

buying bootlegs isnt what record collecting is about, i want quality, this will no doubt be a badly photocopied cover and the above statement about sound quality.
other examples of this are the leech cd that sounds as if someone had all the singles and burnt them to cd with a turntable pitch control miles out. this isnt what any band intented for there music. not to mention the band getting nothing for it.

Well if the quality is significantly worse then that I can understand.

The Leech cd doesn't sound that bad at all.  Sadcorps and ernie are ridiculous about paying tons for vinyl where there is no difference in quality when compared to cd.

i thought most people here would probly agree that cds are simply undesirable,
i dont mind paying lots for records because buying records is what i enjoy, regardless of sound quality a record just has this unexplainable attractiveness that a cd cannot achieve, let alone an mp3.

has anyone here seen the documentary "vinyl". thats some guys that take it to the extreme but they "get" the whole desirability thing.

Oh great, another vinyl vs CDs debate.

I can't tell which I'm more sick and fucking tired of hearing. The Vinyl vs CDs debate or the Melvins as a trio vs Big Melvins.

change that too i dont mind paying lots for old used collectable records that are being sold by someone who actually once owned them because they liked it. of course i hate having to buy NEW records direct from a flipper, who doesnt, i havent ever had to flip anything so i guess im not that poor afterall, now leave me alone this thread doesnt need to turn in to another arguement thread.
i hereby leave.

I think I paid about $15 for my copy of Houdini on vinyl when it came out. I did also buy it on CD that day too.

I certainly would not purchase this bootleg though.

That Leech disc is horrible. It's plagued with speed errors. If I remember right, weren't a couple of the tracks cut short?

With that said, they should really release a disc/boxset/digital download collecting all of these odds and ends singles/b-sides.

Nobody Read my Record care, and suggestions thread apparently, Tape your goddamn LP'S so you don't wreck em'!

It's cheaper to source out an 8-track cartridge tape deck and a box of NOS cartridges than it is owning ONE SINGLE melvins album on Vinyl!!!

don't be shy when it comes to Defunct media, records themselves are friggin' Primordial relics themselves..don't call me on that whole..."nobody uses tapes anymore, this isn't the 90's you know" ...BS...

8 tracks will hold up to Broadcast level frequency response at 3 and 3 quarters Inches per second tape speed.

If you can't be bothered to understand and own an open reel tape recorder (EVEN BETTER) because you, yes YOU, can put more than one entire ALBUM, on a 7" reel and actually not have to get up and turn over a record to side B every 20 minuts while your sticking it to your wife! (did I mention the sound is STILL going to hold up to 33 and one half Rotations per minute?)  you can't lose! it's worth tracking down a decent Reel to reel player, it's the MELVINS we're talking about, don't ever forget that!

EVERYTHING mastered these days, even for a vinyl has to go through Digital at some point.

Though I've never heard houdini on Record, I'll bet it's a better experience than hearing the CD mastering job.

nothing on CD ever sounds as "real" as an LP.

the Melvins on their facebook page:

"Hey Folks, some douche bag out there has made over 5000 counterfeit RED vinyl "Houdini" records (there was no red edition), and is passing them off as real for big bucks. These are fakes. Aside from sounding like complete crap they are made with the sole intention of ripping off you guys, as well as the band. Anyone that can give us the name of the scum bag making them, we will take care of mightily. Please pass on the word and let us know when you hear someone trying to pass them off as real!! Please tell any store, online or eBay, etc. - trying to sell it, that it's a fake, as they might not know. We only want the scumbag that's pressing 'em!"

exactly. i don't care how i get the music as long as i can hear it.

oh, i'm not defending these assholes for ripping off the band and labels, nor the sound of shitty bootlegs,  just tired of the vinyl vs. cd debates. it really doesn't matter to me what format i buy something on, as long as i get to hear it and that i can hopefully support the band in question at the same time (and not completely deplete my bank account in the process)
