Figure this must already be a topic that has come up here more than several times.
Just the same, I think it took me a while to track down my First Melvins CD.
It was Live at the fucker club, and I suppose it was just new at the time; therefore In stock locally.
I randomly caught Mombius Hibachi on Much music late one night and was instantly insane about this band!
The next thing I know I'm on a bus downtown to Toronto, and picking up the HONKY LP.
and It was so different than I ever imagined, and It truly and profoundly affected my life forever.
Then I heard LYSOL... and the music has warped my fragile little mind. [-o<
and soon after picked up GPT/OZMA and consequently subjected everyone around me to it's awesome power.
(near the time the bootlicker had just come out, so I also scooped those up as they came out as over priced "Imports")
went back and bought Bullhead and Lysol on vinyl (and later scrounged up a used Stag LP)...and if that wasn't enough, the record store dude looked at my purchases and said : oh, hey, you know The Melvins are playing in Toronto in a few weeks from now, we got tickets right here if you want?.... :shock: two days after my 16th Birthday!!! and I'm not ashamed to admit it was the first "real" concert I ever attended, and it has shadowed everything I've done with my life since.
Those were still the best years of my life so far.

I remember hearing EYE FLYS for the first time and deciding right then and there that it was the heaviest thing I'd ever heard in my life.
The first album I heard in its entirety was STONER WITCH.
And then, it just spiraled out of control.....
No one touches the awesome heavy weirdness that is Melvins. Slowed and throwed, baby.

First two from an actual store were Stag and Honky the week Honky came out.
Honky. I was just getting into the band around early '97 and my friend/drummer in my band (who's also a music writer) brought a promo copy along for the car ride to an out of town show. i was really into experimental noise at the time and it completely appealed to me for that reason, esp. "Lovely Butterfly". i went out and bought it a couple of weeks later and slowly started buying more of the back catalogue over the course of the summer...

houdini when it came out. but i did not like it because i was 13 at the time and did not understand the beauty of this music. besides i was more into popular alternative bands like nirvana, faith no more, rage against the machine, pearl jam etc...
i came back to the melvins end of the nineties with the trilogy albums. and it's love eversince!

Buying High On Fire's 'Blessed Black Wings' in '05 there was a sticker on the cover that said "For fans of Slayer, Motorhead, Melvins". I thought "never heard of them, strange name, lets check 'em out". I looked on Allmusic guide and they had 200 releases. Going by reviews Stoner Witch and The Bootlicker had the best ratings so i took the plunge and ordered both. Bootlicker arrived in the post first and the vocals really reminded me of British Indie act The Charlatans. 8-[ I thought hey this is pretty cool, interesting, bizarre, laidback stuff. I like this. Then a few days later Stoner Witch arrived and tore my head off. "WTF is this???" :lol: :lol:
I quickly got all the rest of the records and was amazed that with each one i purchased, EVERY album impressed me. I was gobsmacked and suddenly a big Melvins fan. Then i brought Colossus haha!
It still amazes and disappoints me that i was completely oblivious and lived a Melvins free existence right up until 2005 and the age of 27. #-o #-o

I know. It was a passing similarity i must say tho in retrospect.
Someone gave me a GPT cassette, but the first album I bought was the Bullhead LP.
The last album I bought was the Endless Residency orange 8xLP box set (No.8)
The Trilogy. I think of the three The Crybaby was the first one I got.

Houdini was my first, also in 2005, maybe late 2004, when I was like 14/15.. After discovering Nirvana a bit more, I decided to listen to some of their influences, and ordered a cheap cd version of Houdini.. After a few listens I ordered Stoner Witch, Stag and Ozma :)
saw them live, didn't know what to make of them, noisy fuckers. i liked it. kev's bass playing and antics stuck in my mind inspired me to borrow a bass (always was into electronica/ scratching records/turntablism to this point). dales hitting of the drums were long talked about with work colleagues.
bought HAT thought it was alright at first.
bought lysol, took it back to my house where i had a kick ass pa left over from a party/gig in my room which i decided to set up to listen to the album. listened to it with two friends. all 3 quite drunk. the place shook. we couldn't believe what we were listening too. that was great, and very memorable. still have the memory of where the bass kicks in the 2nd verse whatever (yknow doon duunnn), we all looked at each other and laughed.
bought ozma and literally felt... i've been waiting my whole life to hear this type of stuff.

Me too! But, it was too much to absorb at the time. I listened to it a few times and shelved it for awhile. This was the mid-90's and I'd never heard anything this strange. My next one was Houdini. Then I think I purchased everything as it was released, sprinkling in the older stuff when I could.
Grabbed GPT shortly after it came out ... I was 14yrs. old and a fan of other stuff on Alchemy and my buddy recommeded this as something I would love - he was right! And pretty much just kept getting 'em when new ones dropped ... dropped the ball a bit in the Atlantic era and missed out on a couple of those ... but when I saw the Trilogy ... it all just started up again ... and just keeps going ... and going ... and ...

first was houdini and shortly after gluey porch ipecac release.
these were the only ones hmv in oxford uk stocked at the time, and gradually i got more and more,
think i got nearly all there cds this way, definately everything ipecac put out, also was really surprised one day when they started stocking the solo albums. didnt really start going to decent record fairs until around the same time i got the internet.
i didnt get a computer till 2004, and finding out anything about the band seemed really hard before that.
once i got online i soon learnt about all the singles and merch and have tracked most of it down since 2004.
GPT in 87 or 88. Introduced to me by Dominic Dodd from Stockport, Manchester at the end of Runway 09 at RAF Leuchars Air Force Base, Scotland (now Dr. Dominic Dodd), to whom grateful thanks, etc.
The next one I REMEMBER buying was Prick in 1994, at Soundhouse Records in Coventry.
What happened in between is lost. What happened afterwards is mostly lost, too. I suppose I bought them one at a time, in order, as they were released. I loved them from the first moment. One unusual thing I DO remember: when I bought my copy of Stag on vinyl from a record shop in Birmingham, it was sealed with a copy of Interstellar Overdrive in it. There were Stags without I.O. and a couple with. Anyone else see this? It might have even been the record shop sealing them together if they couldn't sell the Floyd cover.
I am totally blanking on what album I bought first, (?) I do remember the first time I saw the Melvins, it was at a Ipecac showcase with bands like ISIS, Mike Patton, Dillinger Escape Plan, ...and then the Melvins came on to close the show, I thought..this Buzz fellow is mighty impressive on guitar...yes.. this is what fun sounds like,,,,or something,,,,Alfunso

I heard a radio show where Kurt Cobain was asked to play some favorite bands.... and he played Hog Leg. Next day I went out and found Eggnog. From that song I assumed Melvins was some sort of insane heavy metal band.
Not long after tht I got Ozma and Bullhead.

"Went"... not really. Around the year 2000 I bought the Houdini CD online, I'm not so sure if it was on CDNow or amazon, but that was the first.
I saw them live, Houdini era, before buying anything myself. My friend Neil had bought Eggnog, but I didn't purchase anything until finding Eggnog on 10" vinyl in 1994. For years I'd see them live religiously but always maintained that I didn't think I'd really like them on record. I finally broke my non-buying policy in 1999 and bought Stag. I think The Maggot was after that and it's just been a giant money pit ever since. Eggnog is still my favorite and I still see them live religiously. And now that I live in L.A. that's twice a year on average!
Hostile Ambient Takeover, bought on December 2, 2003 (via amazon).
Had borrowed Houdini before from a good friend, but wasn't convinced until I saw them live that year, which turned me on big time. Then listened to some mp3s and finally decided it was time to get serious.
After that followed the Trilogy and Colossus of Destiny. Boy was I in for a wild ride.
houdini CD in 93 my uncle got it and i listened to it quite a bit years later it blu my mind hahaha
After having Melvins up as a staff recommendation at work for 7 months, I finally sold STONER WITCH to a guy named Mike. A week later, another guy came in and bought Lysol.
So, the store let me order more....
I received word the other day that "Mike" came back, and bought everything else I had out.
That being, Nude with Boots, Senile Animals, Houdini and Hostile Ambient Takeover.
He'll be back for more.
...And when he least expects it, (while batting my eye lashes) I'll ever so innocently slip him copies of Colossus of Destiny and Prick.

the first album i went and bought was gluey porch treatments. instead of convincing me at once, it took over my mind little by little. then after i saw the band live in action on 2003 on the geek tour with tomahawk, things really started to come together for me and not long after that i started ordering one album after another.
i also remember buying POTRE when it came out, must have been in 2004. the storekeeper didn't seem aware of this collaboration and seemed happily surprised. i knew from his radio show on dutch radio station kink fm he was heavily into darkwave and industrial. unfortunately both kink fm and that record store no longer exist.

The Crybaby was my first melvins album. Ipecac records was pretty new at this point and I had just seen Fantomas on their first tour and was blown away by Buzz's guitar work. I remember thinking that they were a weird band and at the time I was a pretty straight forward metal fan.
I got Houdini through Columbia House or BMG for a penny. At the time I didn't think it was my cup of tea but it grew on me and the next two albums I got were You Choice Live Series and Lysol on a school field trip. Listening to Lysol on the way home on the bus with headphones I felt like I had been dupped until about 10 minutes later when the awesomeness filled my ears. YCLS really is a great live album. I know the Melvins weren't happy with the people that did it but it's nice to hear those songs with more "umpf" behind them.
Then I got Oskar/GPT free from a guy in my art class.
I think it was about 11 years since I bought Houdini now. Even though I like the album a lot would it be crazy to say I think some of the Melvins' best albums came before AND after The Atlantic Years?

I don't think that's so crazy. HAT is my favorite album. I get a little tired of Houdini and stoner witch and stag sometimes. They are all great but they certainly don't define the Melvins.
I find that it's not so much about the albums as it is the period with the Melvins. I'm often in a ozma/gpt mood or a bullhead/eggnog mood or a senile animal/nude w boots/bride screamed murder mood etc...
I'm currently listening to the whole catalog on shuffle for the past week. That's been pretty fun. I think there are 418 songs not including live stuff.
