Title: Anchorage, Alaska Show #1
Post by: jules on May 11, 2012, 04:17:41 PM
It's highly probable that Melvins will play in Alaska in September as the first stop of the 51-gig Melvathon spanning all 50 states and WDC, too.

Does anyone have any first-hand experience of Anchorage (I'm assuming that's where the gig will be) as I might try and show up there with a ticket and a change of socks.

Knowledge of the whereabouts of the second gig of the tour would be useful to know, too.

Anyone been to Alaska? Anyone lived there? Tips?

Oh, and is anyone else going?

I haven't been to Anchorage in over 20 years, but what I do remember is it's cold!  Obviously.  Pack warm.

As for the second show, the closest state is Washington, so that'd make sense.

I don't think I can make it to Alaska, though I'd love to.  If you're going that far, ya may as well stay for Washington and Oregon!

the alaska show would be nice... I bet a plane ticket would be not too expensive from canada.

Alaska's pretty awesome.  Went there for the first time last year for 10 days of fishing.  Spent a couple of days in Anchorage.  Quite a few good bars and of course a visit wouldn't be complete without spending a night at the Great Alaskan Bush Company.  Anchorage's finest gentlemens club.

I would think the next date would be in WA or CA.  If they're renting gear, they might fly back to CA to pick up their normal gear and start the tour from there.  Seattle is the closest in the lower 48 to Alaska, so they might start there as well.  If you come to Seattle, you can crash at my place (must like children).  We have a spare bedroom.

I had a friend who stayed in Alaska over the summer roughly 8 years ago.  He loved it.  I forgot why he went.  It was kind of random.

Has Anchorage been confirmed?  I'd imagine they'd choose Juneau just because it's closer to fly into.

i lived in alaska for 5 years and the most part in anchorage. i am guessing that they would play at Chilkoot Charlies. its the largest bar in town and has the most shows. there are a few other spots that could house the MELVINS. i know anchorage like the back of my hand. feel free to ask away.

Juneau would be close but you can only get there by air or sea. so i think it might be harder to get a large crowd. fun fact: by total square miles Juneau is the second largest city in the USA.

Cleveland Rewind's the person to ask.

We have to assume the gig will be in August or September. We won't know the date until it's posted on the Melvins Facebook page. Have to start saving.....................

They do come and go, that's for sure.  But I'm in one that I don't want to see go :)  If I can make it happen, I'll be there.  This has everything to do with saving money for future endeavors.

tour du madness is impossible for me to accomplish due to work constraints...
I'm thinking of flying in from b.c.... POSSIBLY Washington if the flights much cheaper. I just got a huge bonus this month so that really helps...
plane tickets no problem really.. it's finding a place to stay.
As it stands right now, count me in.
anybody know of hostels in alaska?

Yeah i was just kidding , a good relationship really is a great thing!!! that was just a perfect opportunity to use that reference, which has a special meaning with me and my wife , Brodie and Rene in mall rats was almost like me and my wife when we first started dating (minus the whole getting fucked in a very uncomfortable place by some guy from fashionable male)

[Brodie picks up a controller and continues a paused video game]
Rene: What are you doing? You promised me breakfast.
Brodie: Breakfast, shmreakfast. Look at the score, for Christ's sake. It's only the second period and I'm up 12 to 2. Breakfasts come and go, Rene, but Hartford, "the Whale," they only beat Vancouver once, maybe twice in a lifetime.

ok back to Alaska

will be headed down from Fairbanks, +1.

yes, there is a hostel, it's part of the "chain" of them on the west coast (think downtown Seattle, SF, Santa Cruz, that group).

tourist hotel rates may be in effect, but there's PLENTY of hotels there.

does anyone know their recording policy?

Melvins are ok with it.  Sometimes the venue might forbid it, but..I really doubt the venue in Alaska will care.

Hopefully the venue has backup power, if in fact it was affected.

Melvins always bring powerful weather patterns with them when traveling...

The setlist was the same as the Canadian tour but they played hooch instead of freak puke. It was cool to see/hear trevor play freak puke songs with the electric , just a bit more heavy. Fucking fantastic!!!

There were 70mph gusts when Melvins arrived the previous day. Dave Curran almost shat himself, he said   They thought they were going to crash!  The wind had died down a bit by the time we arrived, but it was still really bumpy, ha!

There was no power failure last night at the venue as Melvins were generating their own.  :ohsnap: :ohsnap:

ok, a "missing USB cable" cable and edit job later.

turns out that there were 190 pix, and exactly 111 pictures made the "cut", uploading now, will post 14 favorites and the album/slideshow link, if you want ALL of 'em, snag 'em, as I'll probably delete half of them in a week or so (the repetitive/near-duplicate ones)

I'd guess between 650 to 800 out of 1200 capacity.

cluttered but not packed floor, and 30 up in the balcony (out of just over 100 seats up top)

probably one of the bigger venues for this tour.

Bear's Tooth does a really good job of bringing up bands and promoting them...the Melvins missed "First Tap" by one day, the 1st Thu of every month they debut a new beer "flavor" and have a show to celebrate.

the bands are eclectic yet well-known enough to pull the peeps.

been grooving to the audio, and especially latching onto the moments that sound like Clutch (the band)  i.e. the grinding riffage with the shout-vox on top.

Freak Alaska windstorm leaves Buzz Osborne of The Melvins with soiled underwear
Alaska Dispatch | Sep 12, 2012

World-famous "sludge-metal" band The Melvins played Sept. 5 at the Bear Tooth Theatre in Anchorage arriving in the teeth of a massive windstorm that cut power to thousands and caused damage across Southcentral Alaska.

On Sept. 10, the band's frontman, Buzz Osborne, gave a play-by-play of the group's trip via Spin Magazine's "tour diary" blog. Here's a little of what Osborne had to say about being a guest in the Last Frontier. He begins:

We landed at Anchorage after 3 1/2 hours into a 75 mph windstorm. Really rough landing. I hate flying anyway and this did not help in that department one bit. Shitting your pants is no way to start any tour....

You'd think it would take more than a little headwind to scare the feces out of a sludge-metal front man, but hey, we all have our boogieman. Osborne continues:

After I changed my pants in a semi clean airport bathroom we made our way to the hotel. They picked us up in a bus-sized party wagon complete with a bar, flashing lights and a stripper pole. The only thing missing was the booze and the strippers.... We are probably the only band in the world to get picked up in a stripper booze wagon with no strippers and no booze.

Note to future touring bands: this was an unusual choice by bookers, but you know what they say ... "In Alaska, the odds are good, but the goods are odd!"(*)

Once at the hotel, "the boys" settle in before making a trip to the liquor store for Pabst Blue Ribbon (no comment). From there the epic hotel party is on! Osborne writes:

The winds continued to howl all night with the power flickering off and on every few minutes. I sat in the room and fell asleep watching The Shining which seemed like the right movie under the circumstances...

The next day, The Melvins awoke well rested and ready to play a gig only to discover the power had gone out, and with it the promise of a warm shower. So Osborne went downstairs to harass the concierge, who said she "could work all of that out, no problem" and handed Osborne a flashlight and a key to a room with a working shower. Classic.

(*Usually that idiom pertains to hunting and trapping a boyfriend up north, but it more or less applies to everything else here; take it or leave it.)

oh, and for the record:

-yes, my girlfriend and I were on the road when this said windstorm hit, right near mile 80 was when the rain stopped (it started before Denali Park, or about 150 miles earlier) and the wind started...in the pitch black darkness, about 11:45-12:30...trees across the side-roads (not the Parks Highway proper, it's wide-shouldered and very well maintained), signs knocked over, etc.  we heard 95 mph winds/gusts across Turnagain Arm (sp?)

-yes, the weather made her cry while driving, as the LAST time we hit weather in May in St. Louis (ok, April 28, about 4pm), we were pelted with baseball-sized hail that totaled the rental car out (totally driveable other than 80 dents and a spiderwebbed windshield)

at some point I'll try and collect my thoughts on the trip there here, including my 2pm 5 minute impromptu convo with Buzz in the Bear Tooth lobby.

it's just Septembers, by nature, are "busy" months in Alaska, between hunting/fishing/berry picking, throw in a half-dozen decent concerts already this month, and 3 Flogging Molly shows at the end of the month, and where do I find the time?

the offer still stands for anyone to make a movie of the Anchorage show, I have all the requisite pieces (HD video, multiple external audios, pictures, setlists, posters, etc...)....I just need to throw a flash drive together.

lemme know...

so the poster for this show (marlboro box/kid) has disappeared from Expresso Beans (poster collector site) and I can not find any info on it.

what happened to it?

Secret Serpents still has it in stock, but that's about it.

Was it ever on EB? I've never heard of a poster being removed from there.

I saw it on there a day or two after the show, but never on gigposters, now it's on neither.
