let's hope they continue with dunn.
we should consider ourselves lucky: our favourite band has more than one line-ups and all of them range between "kick-ass" to "brilliant".
if they continue with the approach to release several eps with different lineups throughout the years i am more than happy.

A Woman's Work is Trevor Dunn

I think there's enough room in this world for four piece and three piece Melvins to go about at the same time.
But I agree, he's a great fit.

In a round about sort of way they already have! Buzz said they recorded about 50 songs and that they would probably come out at some point. Lets hope that's sooner than later eh?  [-o<

Trevor Dunn is like Mary Poppins, he comes in, makes things awesome and then moves on to the next thing when his work is done. Some of you guys sound like the children that wished Mary didn't have to leave and wished they could have her forever! lol  Trevor recorded Freak Puke, toured with the band and help them beat a world record, and then will be off to his next stop... a tour supporting an amazing new album by the band Tomahawk!!!!

Someone asked Trevor that on his website. He said it wont happen. The main reason: he lives in NYC and Buzz and Dale live in LA.

To be honest I don't think Tomahawk really comes into it, that band is very much a part-time band these days for everyone involved.

However if Fantomas were to kick back into gear or Mr Bungle got back together...

Hard to say, it's only at the rumours level and Dale said it was unlikely anyway since he hadn't heard anything about it.

Oh okay.

On Fantomas I personally think they're pretty much dead. As painful as the thought is. It's been 7 years since their last album and 9 years since they last recorded anything (DC & SA were recorded together in mid-'03).

I remember Patton saying about 4-5 years ago (pre-FNM reformation) he wanted the next album to be totally electronic and put a pic of the keytar type thing Buzz was going to play on the album and said Lombardo would be using one of those electronic drum pad set ups. Meh.

Patton's main focus these days seems to be voicing video games & making soundtracks with little dabs of FNM, Mondo Cane, Moonchild & eventually the new Tomahawk album, now pushed back to January 2013.

Trevor Dunn is the best bass player Melvins ever had

The guy was like a one-man show inside a Melvins show.

Trevor

well, hes pretty much known Buzzo since the mid 90s, they worked on Fantomas years ago, I think it was a good experiance for both Buzz and Tevor, and Im very happy they kept in touch and worked on more things together. Im happy they haved looked out for eachother in some ways in the state of the music industry..Trev must be one fucking awesome cat to be involved playin with the melvins...I mean, thats the first thing that comes to mind.

I think Trev Is probly a hoot to play with, Im sure hes smart and also very funny and would be pretty cool to tour around with.

Im glad it turned into something like melvins lite.

trevor Really must be a long time melvins fan too, Im sure they go back, wayyy back..good things have bloomed from the friendship.

Didnt Melvins open for Mr. bungle..I seem to remember the Trey spruance interview and was talking about how The melvins were basically booed off the stage opening for them, and so (being melvins fans) mr.b tuned their guitars down three quarters of an octave and played a full set of just one note...in tribute to the melvins..

that is magical!

I think Im just very proud for them all, I just have ONE last question,...

how are they gonna do laundry touring 50 states in 51 days...playing every night... :o

:(

I remember hearing about the electronic album, and didn't feel too excited about it.

Patton's film works have been interesting, but most of his other stuff has been really hit or miss for me lately. (I'm talking newer material here)
Fantomas doesn't neeeeed him-or Dave, really. But imagine Buzz & Trevor with Dale and Lombardo dueling again but this time it will be the most massive drum kit you have ever seen. Four gongs - at least. They can do a reverse LITE and call it HEAVY.

I think I just predicted the end of the world.

2012 is Year of Melvins.

I agree, I think the last thing he put out of any real quality was the Crank: High Voltage soundtrack which if you haven't heard it sounded pretty Fantomas-ishy. But yeah that was a good 3 years ago. For me it's surprisingly really as I would've thought with the whole FNM reunion cash grab/sporadic touring thing the influx of funds might've lead to him putting more stuff out than previously as he wouldn't 'need' to tour for them.

I remember reading in an interview with him (again pre-FNM reunion) that he was basically sick of touring and in future would be looking to scale that side of things right down. Another reason why I don't hold out much hope for another Fantomas album or Bungle reunion.

I still regularly listen to Fantomas albums far more than FNM or Peeping Tom.

Plus I love Buzzs tone on those albums, the guitar is fucking heavy - he'll have to get back on the Les Paul for that one!

As far as Mondo Cane, I dig it but gotta be in the right mood. I do enjoy Peeping Tom still tho, always dug that record.

That's not what I'm saying at all! Big Belvins are SUPER HEAVY and I LOVE THEM TO PIECES.
I can see how I contradicted myself there because the opposite of Melvins Lite (which is still heavy, imo) is Melvins Regular, which is really Melvins Heavy. Am I making sense here? Anyway, you really can't get much heavier than the heaviest of what they've already accomplished in the past: That being Bullhead, Ozma, Eggnog and Maggot...... again, my opinion.
I HOPE Melvins stay with The Biz for a long time, and I think they will. However, they still have their own band and they promised Dale and Buzz that they'd never quit or put their own thing aside for them.  Lite was a great opportunity for both bands to do their own thing for a bit. I think the joining of Dunn has the potential to open new doors for a lot of other "guest/magickal friend collaborations"... Melvins Heavy was just wordplay I was messing around with. Melvins is always heavy just like Melvins is always gay.

I can't get past the bad lyrics on Peeping Tom - sounds like an 8 year old rhyming some of the time, that and how bad some of the songs are like 5 Seconds. Some of it should not be that standard quite simply, but the other half makes up for it though.

I've always loved the lyrics and thought they were subtly making fun of pop lyrics.

From AMG's Peeping Tom review:
"His lyrics mock the self-important coolness of the music industry and self-parody his own place in it. The last line of the chorus is a particularly smart addition, painting on still another layer of sarcasm in how it parallels Britney Spears' "Oops...I Did It Again" -- which he quotes directly at the very end of the track. Patton is self-aware: the Britney shout-out shows that he knows this is the closest he's been to writing anything near radio material in 15 years. Simply put, the man understands irony: he knows exactly what he's doing in convincing waify songbird Norah Jones to sing "The truth kinda hurts, don't it motherf*cker?" on "Sucker," and he knows just how faux-clever it comes off when he sings "I know that assholes grow on trees/But I'm here to trim the leaves" on "Don't Even Trip." Of course, all this smirking could be interpreted as Patton thinking he's better than everybody else, but it could just as easily be an acknowledgement that the prestige he's garnered in the rock world for being so experimental and arty is really no more meaningful than the vanilla-flavored teen pop stardom thought to be his antithesis."

Ok, I guess that makes sense. The sarcasm obviously didn't carry through to me.

QuoteOn every street corner, every bar
On every radio, and every car
On every club, every dance floor
Hot right behind every door
On every restaurant, every plane
On every ghetto blaster from here to Spain
On every elevator, every PA
The speakers pump, calling out my name

So then his effort to get a major label to sign Peeping Tom was a six-year-long sustained work of post-modern performance art? The man is a genius.

He tried getting Fantomas on a major label too and then decided to start Ipecac for his weirder work.  What's your point?

Technically it's a fanboy/fangirl fest since some of the people having the discussion are female. Getting mad at Patton coming up in a Trevor Dunn conversation is like getting mad at someone mentioning John Lennon in a post about George Harrison.

Yes it is!  I don't understand why so many dislike it but I assume many expected Carry Stress in the Jaw recreated over and over for an entire album.  I didn't find White With Foam disappointing in the least.

And if you like Sister Phantom Owl Fish, Debutantes and Centipedes is equally as good.  You should also check out Endangered Blood.

I think Sunny Kim was the right choice; their voices compliment each other.  I absolutely LOVE Jennifer Charles, her voice is amazing!  But with the exception of maybe two songs, I don't think her voice would have been a good fit for most of the songs on that album.

wonder what happened to MadLove.  I think that album White With Foam is brilliant.  That was released back in 2009.  I suppose, at this point, MadLove must have been a temporary outlet for Trevor Dunn's creativity.

Did anyone here ever see them live?  I would be curious to hear if they pulled it off in concert.

I saw them in Ithaca, they did a pretty small tour and Dunn said it was a disaster. They were really good live tho, Ches Smith is a phenomomal drummer. I was hoping for a follow up album too but it's looking less likely. Does anyone else have Trevors solo album on Tzadik? Its all film scores he did. It's worth picking up if not.

I saw that MadLove tour also, in Buffalo @ Soundlab. Maybe 75-100 people at the show. I thought they were great live. The keyboard player was previously in Charlie Hunter's trio for a few years, Erik Deutsch? Then after Madlove I saw him in Shooter Jennings' band at a free outdoor show. Weird.
I'm assuming Dunn meant the tour was a financial disaster, probably averaged 50 to 200 a crowd on a good night.  Music and band seemed to be in fine form though.

Yeah, he said they were ripped off by a couple promoters and that it just in general wasn't a successful tour. I bought a shirt that I've never worn just because he said he needed to sell them to make gas money to get back to Brooklyn. I really liked that cd, I still bust it out once in a while. YOUR QUESTION:
08/08/2019 13:39:04 One Mean Cockfighter

Hi Mr. Dunn. Are there any plans in the work for you and the Melvins to record or release any more music?

MY ANSWER:
Cockfighting is cruel.  No plans with the Melvins right now but Buzz and I have done some duo recording and will likely tour in 2020.

I could see a new album at some point but I don't think they will run it into the ground touring wise like FNM did which I suspect might be a reason behind including Scott Ian & Lombardo no possibility of full scale touring.

Dunn himself...I read a quote someone posted here when asked about a Bungle Reunion and his sentiment was that he hoped to never see that happen...maybe they all picked on him the most because he's smaller than everyone else?...by now he's hopefully got in shape out on that 5150 tour, and he's able to kick Mike and Trey's butts so they'll think twice before they pick on him anymore...Must have been Dale and Buzz who have been Trevors Personal Trainers and now everyone else In Mr. Bungle is scared of him.  :P

Hopefully the money is there enough that they'll be able to put aside any personal or creative differences for now and who knows how this could shape up?

Those guys are all so exceptionally talented.

Raging wrath is long overdue for an official Release and everything, It's been classic to me since highschool and I honestly learned to play thrash metal because I was so inspired by that stuff.

I really truly wonder if the Melvins re-releases inspired ideas for Mr. Bungle re-releases or Reunion etc?

Raging Wrath cassette Re-release!?!?!?!?  [-o<

There was a Faxed head show back in 2013...I wonder if anything else came from that?

You tapeheads... Raging Wrath is the only cassette I own that's at all collectable or sentimental. I think I paid ~$50 for it in 1999

You Tapehead*

I think there's only one of me around here.

Anyway, if you ever sell that tape let me know.  8-[

What else you got?  :-$

I have a lot more sentimental collectable tapes around here than one.

But If I had to choose...Eggnog, and Some Anal Cunt Tapes too.

Anaconda sold me a few of his prized tapes, Killdozer and Butthole Surfers and some New order-Joy division.

those are above my bed on the wall, on one of those oldschool wooden shelves designed exclusively for Cassettes.

Idunno what else I got really, it's a handful of tapes in storage. A few things that I recall are OzzyLive and Loud because it had that awesome packaging, and what I believe to be original issue sub pop Nirvana Bleach and Beastie Boys Check Your Head, which must have been my most played before going full CD.

I'll have to take some photos for you...It's scary how insane the collection got since highschool.

I used to go everyday at lunch to the Goodwill and began to collect all the tape cassettes, it's been 20 years.

If anyone here loves hearing Dunn do Zorn compositions, there's a disc in this box set for you.

I don't know what these compositions are. I'm debating. I'd like the Medeski disc, too.

Coming in January 2023 on Rock is Hell:

DUNN with RUTMANIS "Crackpot Whorehead" LP
clear/blue mixed vinyl, 300 copies
silkscreened slip-in cover

artwork by Gina Skwoz & Trevor Dunn

---

Also there's a beautiful discogrpahy on Trevor's site that I just visited for the first time, lots of records I've never heard of.

---

Lastly, at some point the collab was maybe going to be called KING DUNNO which I might like better than just King Dunn.
