Very nice!
Slight little personal coincidence as I was just watching that Minneapolis hardcore documentary yesterday which is like 60% about Husker Du during their hardcore days.
"Data Control" was the closing track on Husker Du's 1982 debut album Land Speed Record which was recorded live to tape at 7th Street Venue.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Land_Speed_Record_(album)
cool stuff. very hardcore punk plus weirdness. 8)

If every track on the split/collab is as good as this it's easily gonna be the best one of the whole lot.
I really dig this.
Precious little revealed about a new Melvins release yet again! So this is a 12" EP or LP??? I'm guessing more AmRep?
Nice! Outta left field, Melvins covering Husker Du, never woulda suspected. Great choice for a cover and a great take all round, digging it! Miss Mould's deadpan vocal delivery ... but hearing Buzz sneer " A Multinational Corporation!" makes up for it ... that was fucking hilarious!

For some reason i always get Helms Alee mixed up with the band Big Brave. I'm not too familiar with their music so when i hear this new song i can't really detect their influence or input. It just sounds like Melvins to me. I didn't know the original so it sounds good. It hasn't blown me away but it's rocking and decent so i approve.

I know i've read quite a bit about the music video to this song but i purposely haven't watched it. I saw about the first 20 seconds and then just listened to the song. It's not that i don't like the visuals. But it feels like one of those videos that will be too attached to the song in my mind. I don't want to hear the song and always associate it to the video. I'm not sure what triggered this in me for this particular track. I don't normally think this with other Melvins songs or indeed with other bands. But this video gave me this feeling very quickly.
i thought the video was pretty cool. definitely Jesse Nieminen's most visually stimulating work yet in my opinion. i never thought he wasn't good or anything but i never found interest in too many of his visuals over the past 7 years or whatever since a walk with love and death, but i really dig those found in this new video.

I really liked his video for Discipline 23. That was really pretty fantastic. I'm not saying the new one isn't. I just don't want to see it - like i say i'm not entirely sure why.

Husker Du rules. Would love to see Melvins cover more of their stuff. Probably a tie between them and the Meat Puppets for 3rd best band on the classic SST roster. They were definitely the best songwriters. Pretty much love all their stuff except the last two Warners albums which are pretty sketchy.
One of my top 10 shows ever was the first and only time seeing Bob Mould Trio, ten years ago in Ithaca NY when the Silver Age album came out. Strong album and rhythm section. They played alot of Husker classics, and Bob sounded as good in voice and on guitar as he did 20 yrs prior.

Huge fan myself
Curious Chief.. Who get's your vote for #1 and 2 from the classic SST roster?
Mine would probably include Sonic Youth and The Minutemen
Black Flag would have to be number one.
Bad Brains and Meat Puppets def up there for me
Yeah - Black Flag #1, Minutemen #2,
I think of Dino Jr,, Screaming Trees, SY, and Bad Brains as top tier in the 2nd wave on SST. Bad Brains didn't sign on til ''86(I Against I).

haha, yeah and it was their last great record.
hails to those top shelves already mentioned ... all kinds of other gems on that roster tho ... Saccharine Trust, Dicks, Bl'ast, Dino Jr, Saint Vitus, Slovenly ... SST was weird and cool shit.
Best of the first wave of SST = Black Flag, Minutemen, Meat Puppets, Husker Du, Saint Vitus
Best of the second wave of SST = Bad Brains, Sonic Youth, Soundgarden, Firehose, Descendents, Gone, Negativland
But really, by the end of the second wave there were so many bands, so many albums it started to feel less SST after awhile.
I Against I - the LAST good Bad Brains album? I do not subscribe to that thought at all.
I Against I was the first BB I ever heard. That cassette lived in my car and I wore it out. Then I bought Quickness.... and then the early stuff. I got into them kinda backwards.

Naw, I said last "great" Bad Brains record ... and it might only be "good" ... been a looong time since I've heard it. It certainly isn't as good as the ROIR tape or Rock For Light which are both great. Is 'Quickness' good? I can't remember? I think it might have been OK, which is like, almost good. Which isn't half bad! Other than that I've heard 'Rise'. It wasn't good. I dunno if it was bad? But it was at least half bad which isn't even OK.
What stuff post 'I Against I' do you subscribe to?

True! You did say "great"!
I look at ROIR Tape and Rock For Light as the holy grails - Bad Brains perfected. I Against I is like a rock masterpiece for them, no lightning fast hardcore or reggae to be found - just amazing songs!!! Quickness is AMAZING - although recorded in a weird way - originally done with a different vocalist and Mackie on drums (Cro-Mags drummer I think?). A lot like a super charged I Against I.
I do not count RISE as a Bad Brains album....I tried listening to it and just cannot. Same thing with a bootleg 7" I had a long time ago with Chuck Mosley singing....NOT Bad Brains.
I love the shit out God of Love, while it is nowhere as classic as anything that came before it - I think it has great songs and great playing.
Build a Nation and Into the Future are also really fucking good in my opinion. Even if Build a Nation feels a little bit too much like it is trying to be another Rock for Light or ROIR tape.
I know there is also a Dub album of Bad Brains stuff - I can do without that. I also don't really dig Black Dots all that much, even though I should since it predates the ROIR tape. Also - the Omega Sessions 10" is killer!
I love love love me some Bad Brains. I also really dig the HR Tapes recording - cannot remember the actual name - BUT - I can do without all of the solo HR material that I have heard.
All this Bad Brains talk and I can't believe no one's mentioning Black Dots . That one is the shit, after ROIR tape. I hardly listen to Rock For Light. The earlier versions on ROIR just blow it away. Too slick w/ the Ric Ocasek production.
Best thing about that I Against I tour, was that it produced 2 - 1/2 great albums, "The Youth Are Getting Restless"(Caroline label) then the "Live" LP & "Spirit Electricity" EP on SST.
Big shout out to Saccharine Trust, and Saint Vitus for top early SST bands. Also some great one-off bands/albums worth mentioning too like Stains & The Dicks. Love fIREHOSE too, but I almost prefer their major label debuts - Flyin' The Flannel & Live Totem Pole EP, over the SST albums.
I never got into Soundgarden's SST albums much. IMO their early stuff was nothing special, but then they really hit their mark w/ Badmotorfinger.
Saccharine Trust is playing the Recess Romp festival this Friday in LA (San Pedro) with the mighty Dwarves and others

I wondered what they would do with it after speeding it up significantly on Five Legged Dog.
I listened to it through headphones. It sounds very big overall. I liked all the tracks and better feeling is great and long 7 mins or something. the sails song i hadn't heard the original yet but was very fun and bouncy. already started my second play this morning on the way to work. but yeah, im going to try and get the vinyl on sunday. it slots very well with the mudhoney release and the sabbath release. out of those three it is going to be hard for me to pick a favorite. and i would say that after all the years of build up to this split/big band release....it definitely lives up to how i've hyped it up for myself in my head over the years.
4 out of 4 stars. two thumbs up.
had more thoughts as it turns out...
about better feeling one of the things that stood out was the vocal melody/harmonizing stuff that has been a feature of the new melvins sound since like 2017. i thought it was really cool to hear that come through even though they added a whole other band on this one, and it had me wondering who is playing on this record exactly. is steven shane mcdonald on it? i think so. but overall the vocals continue to be a stand out for me on these new melvins releases.

The song that you're referring to is actually a Buzzo track called Useless King of the Punks. They just used the lyrics from At the Stake on FLD. Just sayin'

I think there is an element of that. But honestly i tried it. I listened to the regular At The Stake and speeded it up significantly on YouTube and it does sound a lot like the FLD version. Although i agree it does bare a similarity to that solo Buzzo track. I think Stallion said on here before about a connection between the two. So they are probably more connected than many may know.

Yeah, I agree. The two songs already released are good, but for me Bitter Feeling and Sails are easily the two stand outs. Bitter Feeling, along with the great vocals, has a nice guitar noodle ending. Much enjoyed.
I can't figure out who is singing Sails, but they did a really good cover musically of that Uli Jon Roth era Scorps song.

i think nothing can beat regular albums, i'd be a lot happier with less releases but more proper/solid albums with good production
I remember Buzz saying once he prefers EP's to albums, but the record companies do not. I think it was rating his 10 Melvins releases and was in response to picking Eggnog.
Yeah well Eggnog is a perfect EP. All these EPs the last five years have been less essential.
Buzz, if you want to write four great songs and put it together in sequence and master it properly then let's do that. Just doing three covers and a weird improv you're going to re-use on the next album with minimal attention to sonics isn't really making the case for preferring EPs.
It sounds like I'm complaining but I'm not! I'm disagreeing. Still very glad to be a Melvins fan right now.

yeah, impossible to compare Eggnog with these ltd releases, maybe just for the lenght. Anyway i think Buzz can do whatever he wants with all the incredible music he put out in the past, re arrange old songs, tribute albums etc..all is welcome
i'm impressed this one is 5 tracks!
One day there really should be a huge release of ALL the different AmRep EP's and none Ipecac album tracks. Both a physical release and a Bandcamp offering please! I'm always surprised they don't work something out with Ipecac to put out a massive collection of this type or other. Perhaps that's something for when the band is no longer active or just simply old.
I wish am rep would have a bandcamp. i'm good with that. hate buying a cheapy cd, just to rip it stick on a shelf. i'd still pay the 5 bucks.

Bandcamp has a really hard time with cover songs. I think one of the things with amrep is they just sort of seem to skirt the rules around this stuff by only doing limited physical media. They probably pay those minimum publishing royalties based on incredibly small numbers. I'm only guessing, but we wouldn't have the Sabbath record or the Husker cover or the whole Void Manez collab up there. I'd rather buy the Cheapy CD than be second guessing about whether it's missing some unlisted track or whatever.

For some reason, I thought you didn't have to pay any publishing royalties until you've sold a certain amount of copies. So that was my thought behind why they do these limited releases.

Interesting - that would explain a LOT
My vinyl showed up today. I've been very lacking on playing vinyl for a while but I just threw it on immediately after opening it. Extremely happy with it. Only slight complaint is that it doesn't sound like Buzz does any vocals on the Scorpions cover but it's still awesome. I commented back when I saw Helms open for Melvins in 2018 that it was pretty ballsy to cover a song by the band you're opening for but At The Stake was amazing that night and I love it even more on this album.

Whoever is singing the Scorpions song is doing a great job, probably the dude in Helms.
sweet jesus and sweet klaus meine i need to hear that version of sails of charon
So, this EP is pretty rad. My favorite collab so far. Can we just talk about the song Galloping Mind Fuk? Steven's bass is all over that shit and this time, I think it really compliments the song. Great energy and melody...
I think the female voice from Helms sounds fresh in the mix, a good juxtaposition against the layers of distortion, plus I prefer her voice to Teri's.
Better Feelings has brief moments that remind me of Specimen... and of course At the Stake, a tight cover of a great song, losing none of the essence of the original.
Crossing fingers for a factory edition to be released. I missed out on the LP

Agree with all of this!
Great release
This is a good EP!!! I've listened to Helms Alee before but not enough to be able to say how much influence they hold on this one. I thought the Scorpions cover was a bit incongruous with the rest but not terribly so. Better Feeling is a cool, laidback, classy Melvins tune and the update of At The Stake is fantastic! I like the fact they changed it a bit adding the female vocalist from Helms Alee as the main voice whilst Buzz jumps in on the choruses. That was neat and very powerful. Probably one of the better EP's they have put out.
This is a great ep. I was listening to it and I thought to myself that sounds like Gary Chester. Low and behold, in little tiny writing.... " additional guitars: Gary Chester" he is all over this recording, I think that's awesome. Gary Chester makes me want to quit playing guitar and keep playing guitar all at the same time.

"One Gary Chester....there's only one Gary Chester.....One Gary Cheeeeeeeeester, there's only one Gary Che-eeee-ster."
(to the tune of Guantanamera, in case you didn't know)
Gary Chester of Ed Hall, WATA, and Moist Fist?
(BTW I had no idea Kozik had already done a version of the Electroretard cover for MF in 1993 https://www.discogs.com/master/1323173-Moist-Fist-Moist-Fist )
Shit I got void manes and helms alee backwards. Yes guy Jules, that Gary, Buzz loves him some Gary.
The MF record was on Kozik's label before he started Man's Ruin, if that help connect the dots.
So, wait a moment, just to confirm, Gary Chester is on the Helms Alee EP?
Yup.
I got them mixed up.

I remember seeing a photo (perhaps taken by Toshi) of him in the Melvins studio and a comment about him recording guitar. I presumed whatever it was would feature on an upcoming Melvins album and not this EP. I wonder if they did any further recording with him for other stuff too.
I remember him saying he flew out and did this over a couple of days. Hopefully he'll be back, or there is some left overs.
We had had a few margarita by then.
I'm guessing the tour vinyl edition of this didn't make it beyond the first night? Haven't seen any pics of it being sold at the Merch tables. I wonder how many were out aside for the tour
I was able to grab one in Petaluma
Yo you can check my review of this collaboration here, IN FRENCH:
https://www.coreandco.fr/chroniques/melvins-helms-alee-controlling-data-for-a-better-feeling-future-9935.html
Yep, it's in french and it's almost as much about the french socio-political situation in a dystopic short story as a proper review of this excellent EP ! So lose yourself in translation if you like to SWIM mutherfuckin' fishbones !
Does anyone have ANY clue what the line-up on this record was? Outside of the 3 Helms Alee members, Buzz, Dale and some guitar from Gary Chester is anyone else on this?? Steven??? I'd love to get to the bottom of these line-up uncertainties. They really niggle me.
do any of you heroes have an MP3 of the Sails of Charon cover?
kinda can't believe it hasn't been uploaded to youtube.
