I just popped this in and gave it a listen. It has been a while and I kinda forgot how crushing this album is. The song Manky, for instance, is sweet molasses. But what am I saying, all of the songs are! Definitely a nod to their heavier, non-experimental side.
i like the slow one that goes "that shit keeps coming around" i do like that album too. not my favorite, but if you want melvins metal...there you go. shouldnt the track off Demon Night soundtrack be on it? Insant Larry?
it might fit the style
In my opinion; it's the best of the Trilogy.

Yup
AMAZON will be on the setlist with the new lineup, sounds so good with 2 drummers
the maggot is a classic.
it has a perfect flow right up to the highlight - "See How Pretty, See How Smart"
but why did they split all the tracks? prolly just to fuck w/people.
their most consistent heavy album.
Quote from: DudbeanMelvins and Tim Green should be punched for allowing the almighty Dale to be buried in the mix.
totally agree. i keep wondering what was thought when they allowed the drums to be mixed so low.
i've heard that the tracks were split to keep away illegal downloaders.
but it did fuck with people as well, so i guess they achieved whatever it is they wanted.
Quote from: DudbeanMelvins and Tim Green should be punched for allowing the almighty Dale to be buried in the mix.
Yeah, his drums are buried, but the album still kills. I appreciate the Maggot. :D
The Maggot and H.A.T. are my two favorite Melvins albums. I've been listening to The Maggot again frequently for the past few days. Just plain awesome. Some of the best, most brutal material for the live show too.
I will say though, drum mix aside, this album kills. amazingly heavy.
Thanks for creating this thread. The Maggot is definitely the most underrated Melvins release. It's got everything that I like about the band on the album - even a Kevin bass intro.
Sometimes when I need something to throw on that will really kick my ass, like if I've been listening to too much wuss rock, I put on the Maggot and nothing sounds sweeter.

Where did you hear AMAZON with two drummers? For that matter, how do you know it will be in the setlist? Please tell us.

I always thought all Melvins releases are underrated.
hmm. drums sounded fine to me.
anyways, yeah especially AMAZON and amazon were killer tracks
Quote from: Leroyhmm. drums sounded fine to me.
not me. they are just sort of a low-rumble punctuated by short snaps of snare.
listen to HAT immediately after and you will see how muddy they are.
it is definitely a noteworthy effect. just because they don't stand out in the mix doesn't mean that it is inherently negative. just a fact, is all.
i think they went for the machine sound, almost ozma like, with the drums. i love the effect they use on the cymbals on some of the songs. mainly the end of manky. it's like a huge machine letting out steam or something.
Maggot is one of my top 3 favorite Melvins albums. AMAZON, manky, we all love judy are just classics.
Speaking of manky, does anyone else hear what sounds like monks scatting (something like cho-cho-cha-chei) during the second half when the song starts bludgeoning (most clearly heard at around 4:43 - 45) ? Or is that just Kevin doing his slide magic ? Either way that just makes the hair on my neck stand on their ends.
Also the outro of Green Manalishi - they should write a song with only that sound.
Quote from: groundmeat...Also the outro of Green Manalishi - they should write a song with only that sound.
you mean the bit where it's just amazon slowed down?

Is it really just AMAZON slowed down ? I never picked up on that! But either it just sounds mean and evil.
Quote from: perzo)))but why did they split all the tracks? prolly just to fuck w/people.

I think they split the tracks to fuck with everybody who uses the shuffle mode on cd players and now ipods. Probably their way of poking fun at people who are no longer able to sit through an entire album.
haha. on COD, didn't they put like 60 minutes of it on track one, and then the last 4 seconds on track 2?
I like everything about The Maggot, never thought there was anything wrong with the drum sound. I agree, it does sound a bit like a machine. Especially on AMAZON.
I think the reason I like The Maggot and H.A.T. so much is because when you play them straight through, they just flow so well. One song goes into the next almost seamlessly. Kind of like a concept album. They're both very different from each other, but neither has a weak spot, every song sounds awesome.
Quote from: Leroyhaha. on COD, didn't they put like 60 minutes of it on track one, and then the last 4 seconds on track 2?
Yeah. And the five second song only had a one second blip of noise, and the last four seconds was silence.
This was my 5th Melvins album. Initially I was turned off but I finally came around and now I love it. It just had to grow on me or something.
I actually think thw whole production is kind of shit. Not at its best at least. But it's still in my top 5 of Melvins Albums
Quote from: TGHYeah. And the five second song only had a one second blip of noise, and the last four seconds was silence.
i bought this in nyc a while back when i went in with my parents. i asked them to put it on for the ride home (i had no idea what it was going to sound like).
after about 2 minutes of the first track, we all decided to see what the rest of the album sounded like, so my mom skipped to track 2.
after hearing that it was just a little splotch of noise, and that was the whole album, my mom ejected it and told me i got ripped off. one track is just a bunch of noise, and the other is just a short honk.
she told me to check the mail for another thank you letter when i got home.
[she loved to tell me that i was the only person in the world who liked this ridiculous band, and that they should send me personalized thank you letters for being the sole consumer of their products.]
i'd like to sit her down now and put on COD for her. i think the "stop fucking me, you're giving me a headache" may annoy her.
for me, it only succeeds in conjuring up quite pleasurable and enjoyable images of really violent sex.
Love the production on this record, mixed very raw, sort of as not to sound like every other metal recording out there.
Love what they are doing with the drums, it's their trademark.
yea, you're totally right. buried drums is their trademark...
i rather hear the ozma drum sound, you know, where you can hear the drums, and what the fantastic drum player is DOING with them?
that's just my foolish opinion though

This is a great story. I have a few similar:
I read in Rolling Stone or maybe the Rocket was still around, that the COD was just a bunch of noise. Brian had already posted the cover on this site and for that matter I saw the warm up show to the COD tour at the EMP.
Anyway my brother is visiting from DC and we go to Fall-Out records to look at stuff and as usual I check out the Melvins bin and low and behold there is COD. I grab it, paying $18.00 for it. I throw it in the car on the way home and I have my sons with me also. We like it. After a while we want to see what else is on the disc and get ass-jammed like everyone else, curious as to what we just purchased. Now we have to start the cd over again to listen to the 45 minutes that we didn't hear the first time! And you can't skip ahead! Anyway it made perfect sense to us for some reason just knowing the band.
My next COD story is taking Bad Ronald SFO to a Melvins show. He loves it.
Next time I see him he say he bought COD. I think to myself, "Not a good first Melvins cd to get", but he liked it also.
What does this have to do with the Maggot ? Fuck if I know, but great story V.
Here's what I remember about when the Maggot was first released.
Every fucken Fred Meyers, every record store in town had one Melvins release, The Maggot; stores that never had anything by the Melvins stocked it. So somehow Ipecac got the release out. I looked at it and was confused about the 1 on the front. Didn't pick it up until the tour though because I knew I could get it for $10. Yeah, paying $18 for cd's bugs me.
Melvins were on KISW promoting the Maggot and I remember they played Green Manalishi from the Maggot on air. I wish I would had recorded this show, and if someone has it I will trade handsomely for it.
I don't think the drums are buried actually.
I was mainly talking about sudden distorted drums, hihats flying around everywhere in the stereo image. the switching between small/large rooms.
The drums are mixed fine, it's the guitar that's really loud from time to time.

I totaly agree. The only Melvins album that is a unity. And the only album on which I love ALL songs. It's not that I really dislike a Melvins song, but on every album there is at least 1 track that I skip.
I like this album, except for the fact that there's some really long bits of boringness, like the first 2 minutes of Manky and the end of AMAZON, plus the obvious fact that you can't hear the drums.

this record was a reaction to all the pussy daterape metal bands at Ozzfest.
this is in the style of VENOM, Judy Priest and Mot
The Maggot was my first Melvins album. I saw them on that tour, and was forever hooked on the band. I listened to that album all day every day for a long time. I was blown away.
I guess the drums don't stand out as much like on some other albums, but I still think they sound great. I think the sound works well like that, it creates more of an atmosphere, and they're not distracting you or focusing on the drums, something that happens all the way through HAT. The drums on See How Pretty are about the most powerfull thing I've ever heard. The drums make that song sound like the apocolypse is here.
I'm not a musician and I don't have any experience recording music, but I do have a good set of speakers, and I love the drums on The Maggot. I think the album is perfect.
Seeing them play Manky live two years ago was one of the most brutal things I've ever seen, well musically anyway. I wish they'd put more of The Maggot in their set list.
Oh, and I love the slow boring parts. They're perfect for setting you up for one hell of a payoff.
the melvins, masters of suspense :)
The album definitely has atmosphere. A lot of reverb on the album. A lot of little things going on, kind of buried in the mix. It was a good Melvins album for Kevin to debut on.
move along if you ain't in the mood for a bit-o readin'.
[anybody else here love bit-o-honeys??]
i was sort of getting down on the melvins lack of experimentation in another thread (contrasting them to the residents[which isn't fair, by the way]), and i was tempted to think that "while the melvins are great at suspense, there are others that are better," when i realized something great....while the melvins aren't specialists at everything that makes great music great (experimentation, structure, mix, suspense, ambience...etc etc) they are damn good at all of them equally! which is something you can't say about other bands.
to use a familiar example, while the residents are WILDY creative and satisfying in that regard, they've never lingered on one thing long enough for me to really start to love that one thing, and other bands that are too suspenseful have you wasting your time waiting for everything, and providing very little.
in response to my own writing in the new york times thread: i think, for me, the thing about the melvins responsible for my worship is the fact that they do EVERYTHING 75% perfectly, and that's great! this is the type of attribute though, that is logically at the root of feelings of this sort:
'i wish the melvins did this more....., or that more...'
but the truth of this characteristic emerges when you see that because you can accuse them of all these things, they possess a percent of each quality in question, though not 100%.
the melvins are VERY well rounded, with heavy emphasis in certain fields(all the ones i[WE] like!!).
and that is why i love the melvins.
an essay by little Vincent Cavallo, Grade 4.
i don't see how people consider the production on Maggot "shitty". Honestly, if anyone here has recorded in a studio, it would cost thousands of dollars for your album to sound even close to the same quality. Hardly any home recording studios sound that good, and I know from experience because i have one. not that home studios are bad, but i'm just being realistic.
I have no problems with the production. I hope to see the Melvins again with this Big Business project and I am hoping they play more Maggot material. Put Queen on the shelf and play Amazon!
see? there's my boy vin at his finest. I'm going to go ahead and agree with the writings of little vincent except let's knock that 75% up to somewheres around 90%. also: MELVINS well rounded? is that a comment about unky Buzz's waistline? okay, maybe that wasn't so funny. please withdraw that last half-assed joke from the records.
was I supposed to mention the maggot somewhere? oops.
Quote from: glenMELVINS well rounded? is that a comment about unky Buzz's waistline?
not to sound like a total fanboy loser discussing things like this, but it is interesting how buzz has fluctuated in size over the years, ain't it? i'm curious to see what he looks like this tour.
i totally failed to not sound like a fanboy, didn't i?
vin!!! don't feel so bad. I actually had enough fan boy loser in me to have dale autograph my showbill in detroit and the pathetic thing is I am 32 years old!!! autograph seeking is the action of a 14 year old girlie.
dats not so good. anywho....... point being I noticed dale to be a bit more portly than I had expected. oohhh good lord, is this MELVINS or backstreet boyz. so the thread has become a discussion of band weight. I started this. apologies. I'll be better next time.

i bought maggot at the gig last night. i have everything apart from trilogy 2 and 3, Prick and COD.
first listen off i'm not big time into it and it's going to have to grow on me i think. pretty glad it wasn't one of my first melvins albums...
i'm sure it'll rock though sooner than later because i remember when i got HAT i wasn't too impressed first time off either.
did it take anyone a fair amount of time to get into maggot?
Yes. There are still a couple of tracks on it that lead me to skip forward but it does grow and grow on you, and besides See How Pretty is just otherwordly in it's brilliance. Get Bootlicket next!
It took me no time to get into it. Please see the Maggot appreciation thread. This album crushes and is the heaviest album since Houdini. I think it will grow on you. The Maggot will consume your flesh.
fucking love the maggot from the second i heard it i knew it was brilliant.
buy cod is great to listen to when your falling asleep.
Maggot definitely took a while to grow on me as did Honky, H.A.T. and Pigs of the Roman empire. I generally go for music that's not so instant. That way you appreciate it more. You always know when you buy a Melvins album that it's not going to consist of 3 minute verse chorus songs with catchy poppy melodies that wont leave your head. They're a complex, imaginative, experimental and interesting band.
Maggots not top of my list though. It serves its purpose as being the heavy album but I prefer Crybaby or H.A.T for variety. I haven't got Bootlicker or Colossus yet. Melvins fans are hard to please. They're constantly bitching cuz Melvins haven't made Houdini 20 times. I thought the idea of getting into Melvins is that you want music that's a little more surprising and left of centre.
I just saw on the Primus board a few days ago, someone posted a link to download this album for free. Does that annoy anyone else? What kind of cheap-ass dickwad actually spends the time to download albums in shitty mp3 quality rather than get the actual disc? And the people who put them up, fucking stupid. Put up live shows instead.
disgusting album. one of thier best, out of the trio hands down, and what really compares. lysol, blah blah, i vote the maggot as one of the best, ridiculous FW cover as well
This is in the top 5 of the band's best, hands down.
The Horn Bearer fucking tears. That whole album is awesome.

Calm down. He wasn't doing it to try and screw anyone, he was doing it to turn more people on to the Melvins. Most people there already own it anyway. There would be a lot of bands that I wouldn't be into if it wasn't for file sharing, The Melvins included and now I've already bought about 10 of their albums. File sharing is only helping them, not hurting them.
Wow this is old.
I spinned The Maggot this morning fuckin' loud. My speakers moved forward of 3 inches and one turned sideways and pushed two cd cases on the floor.
Conclusion? The Maggot fucking rocks.
Yes, it has been awhile since someone posted on this thread. But what better Melvins album to crank up when you are in the mood for crushing music than The Maggot? Maybe Houdini a close second? Its my favorite of the trilogy.
this is a great and heavy album.
if you have ever heard mushroomhead, you would have thought they crappily ripped off amazon.
they may have.
???
i wouldn't say that the drums are recorded worse than hat, just because of the reason that it was most likely their choice to have it that way. possibly this album is supposed to be more focused on the strings.
who the fuck knows.
but you are right that the drums aren't mic'ed up and recorded or whatever like the other instruments.
buzz's vocals have come out more through the years, kinda spotlighted.
and i thought they split the songs up because of downloading!
that's wild to hear that that's actually a rumor.
it's quite smart, yet i've checked and they do offer full versions of the song the horn bearer, not split up.

I love the Maggot. The Trilogy has always been my favorite of the Melvins catalogue though not by much as I like all their stuff. I have a coworker who is always asking about music and what to get next. I recommended The Trilogy and he got The Maggot but didin't like it too much. It was too metal for him I think or maybe too heavy. I don't know maybe he just doesn't like it.

it was some 80's sounding hair band and it kinda sucked.. lmao
is this song a cover of a different band?
i always thought it seemed very buzz... but then i guess that live peach cover sounded like tool. (feat. buzz, of course)
Yeah, it's a cover of Fleetwood Mac, back when Peter Green was in the band. Judas Priest also does a cover of it, that's probably the version you heard on the radio. We ALL love JUDY.
INDEED
It is a cover, just console your copy of the Maggot.
Corrosion of Conformity has also done a cover of the song.
the Maggot has to be one of the top 3 Melvins albums ever. They need to bring back that kind of heaviness.
Like splitting up every song into different tracks or making an album that's one long track.
its a good record, but I dont think they feel they NEED to do it again.
I wouldnt mind it though, I welcome everything that comes from the Melvins camp.
Holy fuck. I haven't listened to this in over a year and I am sitting back and taking a gooooooooood listen. This has to be one of the most underrated metal albums EVER. I challenge anyone to name a quirkier, heavier, and more complex metal record. OK, maybe not complex, but just punishing (not counting Meshuggah, of course). It is impossible to name a favorite Melvins release, but right now......at this moment....this is it.
Why doesn't it get more props?

this album grew on me as well. now i think it fucking owns. what's all these people complaining about the drumsound? i like it, it sounds ambiguously heavy. the end of the fucking Horn Bearer, jesus christ...i would love to see the new line up play that and the Green Manalishi live.
The Green Manalishi is fucking great live. Much much better than the album version.

If you were referring to me , I think it was because I just preferred the
massive sound Dale's drums had on some earlier album like Lysol. But now, I realize it's pretty good the way it is.

They're just a tad quiet at times. But maybe that's just me. Other than that I love the Maggot sound; Manky must be the heaviest, most evil song my ears have ever heard and will probably ever get to hear.
By the way, I never really thought of that but I think Manky wouldn't be the same without the disturbing tension of the intro.

The Maggot is not a grower, it just rocks. Period.
Exactly, it didn't grow on me, it hit me right in the face.
amazon is one of my favorite songs. Buzzo's voice plus the twisted rhythm of the song blow me away.
This is the Melvins best "heavy" album by a country mile. Puts ALL other heavy bands to shame.
Anyone know what the AMAZON, and Manky lyrics mean? Even just the general theme?
Can anyone point me in the direction of ripping this cd to play straight through without any skips? Sorry, I'm ignorant of computer stuff. I use Ubuntu for crissake. This is by far my favorite Melvins album and I've followed it on eBay for a few years but haven't afforded to justify buying it for $$$$$ on vinyl. I just need a little advice on how to rip it and listen to it without the skips, for my own personal pleasure of course. Thanks.
The Horn Bearer is such a crushing song. I would love to hear that one live with two drummers! Don't think they've ever played that song live though.

The Horn Bearer is such a crushing song.
An absolute, underrated monster that one.
I love this album probably most of all and here's why:
-you know how it's tied to the circumstances of in your life you associate the album with that time in your life making you like it etc-, at the time I just happened to put in a subwoofer amp and cabinet in the trunk of my car, and a cd player with the dashboard lighter adapter for power. it had a little bass button a sony super bass or whatever and the bass on the first part of manky was perfect to test and check the frequency levels haha. also it sounds great with deep bass AMAZON, Pretty/Smart.. really all of it, it opens up with Dylan by Crover is it? I had a visual monitor for bass loudness at the time and that was, however distorted the image in the rear view mirror was, when it was totally indecipherable as to what the hell you were looking at then your bass was at the right level. Already a Melvins fanatic at this point the Ipecac thing made it more exciting to me, Also that the Maggot and California came out less than a month apart so that album loosed a screw or two in the chassis I'm sure at the same time period being as my regularr employ involved lots of driving.
an album that continues In the Freaktose the Bugs are Dying
:-k interesting.....
THOUGHTS:
This album has the unique distinction for me of requiring zero time to grow on me. I bought it new at the store around the original release, took it home, and it has been a favorite ever since.
I love the split tracks. I think it's one of the best attacks in Buzz's career long campaign to subvert CD track numbering.
To answer a question from four years ago... Open your CD drive, stick in The Maggot, open your CD ripping program (ExactAudioCopy is good in windows) and select to burn the entire CD to CUE format. This will produce two files, one called the maggot.cue which you could delete, and the other which is the maggot.wav which you can play seamlessly in any audio program.
If I haven't said it earlier, then I say it now: This is Melvins finest masterpiece, no album in the world can top The Maggot, absolutely no album.
Yep. It's a "desert island" record for me. I love every song Melvins have ever made, but this particular collection gets played the most.
It must have to do with it being their first release on Ipecac. Maybe they felt they had something to prove. Maybe the label just said, "alright guys, quit fucking around, we want to see what you can really do." This is their "metal" album. The heaviest, fastest and most straightforward trax laid to tape.
Greg and Mike got the record every other label wanted. Buzz knew they wouldn't fuck him over.
This record does have a significant jump from previous efforts and I see what you mean.
I haven't listened to The Maggot all the way through in a while. I listen to AMAZON, Manky and See How Pretty, See How Smart a lot though. I remember it being really inconsistent. I prefer The Bootlicker.

Each to their own of course, but inconsistent is something i would NEVER level at The Maggot. I'd level that to almost every single Melvins album post Nude With Boots but certainly not this record.

God help me, I'm agreeing with Ian. Was that a pig that just flew by?

Be careful, it's a slippery slope.
This album destroys. Eight songs of pure Melvins, heavy, punishing, satisfying through every second. The few interludes of synth or tape effects never detract. The drums sound different, but I love the mix. Lots of sizzle that gives definition to the drums while leaving room for the chugging riffs. Kevin playing mostly what the song demands. Almost all the vocals have some sort of effect.
There's also a good deal of experimentalism in it, whether it's the weird pitch wheel synth in AMAZON or the scimitar sounds in the Judy. I love this record so much. That apex in See How Pretty... A scream like that - do we hear that anywhere outside of maybe Egg Nog?
If you find fault with this record either your stereo or your ears might be broken.
This is the best melvins album. that will be all.

An easy top 5 put it that way.
I've always really liked the bass line in Judy, so my ears perked up when I heard Wood Goblins by Tad. Check it out and tell me Tad doesn't owe me a finder's fee when they sue.
