That Sex Pistols album probably meant a lot at the time, but as I wasn't alive then, listening to it now, it just sounds so...well, dull really. I guess it's because I heard other punk bands ripping it off before I heard the actual thing. Hence, I don't personally think too much of it. Mind you, everyone talks of how mindblowing the Pixies are too, but to me they just sound average; again, because I've heard them ripped off so many times...
I'm totally into "punk". born in 1981. the stuff I lsten is way more heavy or whatever then the sex pistols, and while I don't like many of the well known punk bands, sex pistols is different. The guitar is quite eerie, vocals are irritating as fuck. awesome!!

As far as you guys go putting down the Sex Pistols, I'm just sorry you missed them. They were the Beatles of punk. Music was going through a horrible phase. There was almost nothing you could listen to. They busted open a whole new type of music that most of the world coudn't stand, to say the least. You have no idea what their impact was to those of us listening. Without them, there would be no Melvins, Black Flag, or most of the bands we listen to now. It was one of those few times in history where a band really did make a difference and changed the whole music scene.
I know the album doesn't sound as powerful now as it was then, but I still have more respect for their music and what they did than any other band I've ever heard.

I don't the Sex Pistols, and I don't like punk at all in general. According to AllMusic.com the Sex Pistols were formed in '75 and broke up in '78. Saying there was nothing to listen to during that time is ridiculous. Bands like Rush, Genesis, Al DiMeola, Van Halen, Led Zeppelin, et al, were putting out albums and touring and didn't have any disco songs or pop songs.
Those are just some groups I like. The point is, there is good music being made at any given time, and throughout history, regardless of what the current popular trend is.

Anyway, I don't really know why I am bothering to explain because clearly you won't agree, but...
On the whole, the music "scene" in the mid to late 70s was all disco or "dinosaur rock". Long extended solos etc and things that were intentionally 'difficult' to play. A lot of people were bored by this and wanted something with more energy and power.
What bands like the Sex Pistols, the Damned etc did (and there was a similar scene in New York), was to reject all of that. Punk was all about doing it yourself. It didn't matter that they couldn't play or couldn't sing. There was a raw energy to the music. It was new, it was different. It was a big 'fuck you' to the rock establishment.
The forerunners to punk were bands like the Velvet Underground, MC5, The Stooges, The New York Dolls.
Of course, punk music was incredibly diverse. Blink 182 and bands of that ilk are not really punk. It was all about DIY. The Ramones, Television, Richard Hell and the Voidoids, Patti Smith, Talking Heads and Blondie are just some of the bands that were part of the New York punk movement in the late 1970s.
Eponymous is spot-on right. With the Pistols and the rest of punk music, it was about the raw energy and power of the music. It was almost like having an orgasm. The feeling was unbelieveable.
Yeah, some of the bands couldn't play their instruments very well, but they got the feeling across anyway and isn't that what music is all about? I saw the Pistols very last show at Winterland in SF and halfway through the show they unplugged Sid Vicious's bass. He was so fucked-up he fell down 2 times that I counted and said some hilarious things between songs ("you hit me in the head but it didn't hurt a bit so tough shit"). But the feeling was still there in the music!
I'll never forget Johnny Rotten's last words that night:
"Ever get the feeling you've been cheated?"
With that, he walked offstage. What an ending to a show & a band.
BTW, the last song they ever played was No Fun.
its one thing to appreciate a good solo, a tough drum fill, some jazzy licks, but punk was about great songs.

Um, it already lists a PiL album.
The Sex Pistols album is a classic, even if you don't like that kind of music, its an important record.
I never really thought the Pistols played "punk" music, though, it was too slow.
Some fantastically great songs though (I love "God Save The Queen" and "No Feelings"), excellent rock 'n' roll, in my opinion.
I don't have a ton of PiL stuff, but Album and Second Edition are both great.
Here I am, weighing in on a post thats 3+ years old.

I have a burned copy featuring most of the songs on Never Mind The Bollocks (10 of the 12, I think "New York" and "Bodies" are missing), and I have the queens jubilee bootleg or something (I can't keep track) by the Pistols that has the demos with Glen Mattlock playing on them, as well as a couple of live songs including "No Fun."
I'm not one of those guys who takes the "Pistols totally rule" stance, because I do acknowledge that they were a manufactured band, and were out to make money.
And I can also totally see why people would hate the Sex Pistols for those reasons.
And Rottens vocals are definitely an aquired taste (though the same can be said for HR's in the Bad Brains).
But I love the Sex Pistols mostly for the music. They wrote some cool punk riffs. I play guitar, and I love Steve Jone's stuff! He played a lot of cool lines in his songs, and it makes for some pretty cool guitar work. He was like Johnny Ramone crossed with Johnny Thunders. I mean, "EMI" "God Save The Queen" "No Feelings" "Pretty Vacant"... Great songs, all of them!
There's so much mythos around the Pistols, it seems like people either love them or hate them based on who they were, not what music they put out.
Me, I just like their music. Thats all, nothing more complicated than that.
And I like PiL's Second Edition because the bass lines are really cool. And what other band has ever put out dance music like that? It sounds so cold and depressing. Its unique, and the bass grooves are so catchy that I do truly enjoy it. I don't ever crave a PiL album, but its something I bring out every once and a while.
As far as how much I listen to the Pistols, well, "God Save The Queen" has 48 plays on my iPod, "EMI" has 33. Like I said, I like their music, I couldn't give two craps about who they were or what "messages" they were trying to push.

I kind of view the Sex Pistols in a similar way as I do the Monkees, since they were both manufactured bands used as cash in attempts on something someone saw as a good way to make money (though I hold the Pistols in higher regard since they, unlike the Monkees, actually
did write their own songs and play their own instruments). That view is that even though they were fake, they were good. The Monkees have contributed some great 60's pop songs to the world. The Sex Pistols have contributed some great rock 'n' roll songs to the world.
Once you get past the moral issues of the fact that both bands deliberately lied to everyone and distorted their public image with the sole intent of making money, you can start enjoying their music for what it was... good music.

Not true. Except for Sid, everyone in that band was determined to get at least one album out. Not comparable to the monkees. Each person in the sex pistols had a definite talent.
As for the ramones, image was very key. Leather jackets, Ramones nom, etc. Image doesn't take away from musical talent.

Like I said, I do hold the Pistols in a much higher regard because they did play instruments, and they did know how to write songs and compose music.
As a marketing approach, though, I do think of them as kind of a punk Monkees.
I also want a Ramones style leather jacket. Though I'd probably come off as a total fake if I wore one around town.
