For me it was Lysol. I bought it at Silver Platters record store in Seattle and I was instantly hooked. It was unlike anything I'd heard before. It's been a few months since then and I've already bought Stoner Witch, Houdini, 10 songs, Bullhead, and Hostile Ambient takeover.
How about you? How did you get into the Melvins?
Stoner Witch
My friend bought Lysol the day it came out. He brought it into my dorm room to hear it for the first time(on cd). I was impressed even though we listened to it on a rather shitty boombox. Before the semester was over i got all of Lysol and about three or four songs off Bullhead(30min.Lys/15min.B.H.). Listened to it all summer on cassete in a big ass truck.
Boris was definetly one of those Bullhead songs. I want to say Your Blessened too, but maybe cause thats my favorite off B.H..
I've been hooked ever since.
gluey in '89. my bassist had it in cassette form.
Houdini  Bought it on vinyl for 5.99 at 2nd Avenue Records.
Started with The Crybaby because of the Tool collaboration. The Melvins certainly got my attention though and the next album I bought was H.A.T.
Stoner Witch was my first. I got it for Christmas 2 years ago.
Bullhead, then Houdini
(http://lazerman.netomia.dk/bullhead1.jpg)
how does bullhead sound on tape?
warm and rich, deep analog frequencies
My first Melvins investment was The Best of The Atlantic years. I'd 'known' of the Melvins for a long time and had heard various odds and ends, I'd just never been brave enough to take the plunge and get one of their albums. And the compilation album seemed like a good place to start. Needless to say I soon purchased (nearly) everything else they've brought out. The only thing I'm wanting to get is the Pigs of the Roman Empire. But I'm not that bothered about getting the two Jello Biafra & The Melvins albums though.
But...... the first album I bought with a Melvins track on it was the Germs tribute album (every home should have a copy!)
don't remember if it was houdini or lysol. the memory slips away.
I think it was houdini with lysol a close second.
Eggnog.
I became a fan just about the time it was released... otherwise I don't think I have ever seen it in a store.
i didn't start with an album, i started with some songs klump showed me
I started with stonerwitch + houdini. Each were 8$.
Houdini in 1994. I had tickets to see L7 and Melvins were opening so I thought I'd check out their music before I saw them. I hated that CD! It made no sense to me.
That changed completely at the concert. I was 100% blown away by them and have worshipped them ever since.
Houdini, very soon after it was released on yellow cassette.
The Bootlicker, but the first one I bought was the reissue of GPT.
Stoner Witch. I got it from BMG after a friend recommended it. I imagine it is intimidating for people now trying to get into the Melvins since their back catalog is so huge. I remember when I first got into them it was about '96 and they had a ton of albums out, now they probably have twice as many.
Lysol & than Honky...

Very true. For that same reason I've been 'avoiding' artists as Zappa, Zorn and many others.
By the way, a good friend of mine finally understand what I like about the Melvins and has bought Stoner Witch, GPT, Bullhead, CoD and maybe some other album since about two weeks. POTRE and Bullhead did the trick, and now he finally seems to see what they're about. Knowing him, sooner or later he'll end up buying all of their stuff.
the first Melvins album i picked up was Stoner Witch, followed by Houdini...not sure of the order after that.
My first introduction to the Melvins was much more interesting however. I had always heard of them and was walking around in a record store one day when i saw what i now know is Lysol. I decided to try it out through the cd player and headphones they had available to sample music. I was most definitely intrigued by the sound of it, but the fact that i couldnt skip to the next track like most of the conventionally formated albums i was used to at the time as well as the fact that when i did fast forward it was still moving at a snails pace kinda dissuaded me from purchasing it right there. I by no means thought it sucked....i just wasnt ready to give up my virginity to the Melvins just yet. I do remember thinking it was one of the coolest, heaviest, most evil sounding things i had ever heard though.
Got Stoner Witch in 1996, followed by Stag, Honky, Singles 1-12, Lysol, Houdini etc
Bullhead, which I dug the hell out of. I really went gaga though, after I saw the video for "Honey Bucket" and ran out the next day to buy Houdini.
GPT.
LYSOL
stoner when it was released...."Revolve" was actually in heavy rotation on the local "alt" radio station (now talk radio) here in NYC...i heard it and said "whoa..what the hell's that? Now this doesn't sound like any of the other flotsam of the era...super heavy, super cool, almost 70's sounding, compared to everything else"...plus I couldn't quite decipher the lyrics, which caused further intrigue...
Okay, my order was..
Stoner Witch
Gluey Porch Treatments
The Crybaby
Collosus Of Destiny
Houdini
Hostile Ambient Takeover
Bullhead, The Bootlicker (bought them together)
Honky, Ozma (got them for Christmas 2002)
Eggnog
Stag
Prick
Lysol
The Maggot
26 Songs
Pigs Of The Roman Empire
King Buzzo
Houdini 2005 A Live History Of Gluttony And Lust, Mangled Demos From 1983 (bought them together)
SOMETHING like that..
First one for me was Ozma/GPT, bought it about 11 years ago. And yes, u guessed it - I'm hooked ever since...
I first heard the Melvin's at a friends. He was a big Nirvana fan and had only bought the Houdini album because of the obvious connections.. anyway, he was going though his records one night, and put on this one track.. it blew me away. That track was Honey Bucket. He wouldn't play anymore because he didn't care for the album much (we are no longer friends..hee he), so I went out that very week looking for the album.
At this point I should point out that I live in the south of england and this was 1994 - before the internet was widely accessible. BASICALLY it was vary rare to find an artist like the Melvin's down your local record store were I live.
Well it took me several weeks of persistant hunting till I finally came across one of their titles - it wasn't Houdini, but I thought I'd give it a go......
That album was Stoner Witch, and has remained my all time favorites of theirs. It has a little bit of everything they do best all neatly bundled up into one smooth bundle of smoothness. The first time I put it on my CD player.....well I'll never forget.
Happy memories
For me, it was Houdini, waaay back in 93. A few months later, Stoner Witch came out. I had a cassette copy of GPT given to me by a "friend". She hated it, knew that I owned Houdini, and gave it to me. Then, I found out that there were SEVERAL albums, EPs between GPT and Houdini, was bowled over at the output these guys have had, and was hopelessly addicted after hearing Lysol....
Now, I'm in the process of procuring all those CDs I foolishly sold during college. But, in my defense, I was very, very poor.
Fuck Ramen noodles. Never again. Hahahaha....
Stag. Then Houdini and The Crybaby.
I bought Bullhead when it came out. I then saw them play in 1991 in a small Indian restaurant. I bought Ozma/GPT and Eggnog at the show.
I've picked up everything else since then.
i got that one with buzz and dale on the cover wearing backwards trousers.
GLUEy
i downloaded a few tracks (bar x, sweet willy rollbar, others) and was like 'shit'
so i went and bought houdini, stag, and honky at the same time. if i remember correctly, that was all the store had, or else i might have bought some more.
Here i show my Melvins inexperience:
The first thing i actually bought was the Fantomas Melvins Big Band CD, which i purchased shortly after getting into Fantomas through Delirium Cordia. At the time i thought Buzz was the bassist for some stupid reason :? After that i bought the first Jelvins CD, and then the collaboration with Lustmord. The first 'Melvins-Only' CD i got was Eggnog, and since then ive bought pretty much every CD (Except Honky, which im having a bitch of a time finding).
i started with their masterpiece

:D
i randomly bought The Maggot, not really knowing much of The Melvins aside from the Fantomas connection (which I was a fan of at the time) The weird thing is at first I saw it as okay "background music" What the hell was I smoking?!?!
Ive never looked at music the same since.
i first heard a bit of lysol when a friend came over but i was going through a "i only listen to johnny cash" phase so i didnt pay it too much attention.
the first time i heard the melvins and actually liked it was when i worked in a death metal store and the girl i was working with put on "bullhead".
boris really had me intrigued... she almost got us fired for not playing death metal.
it did actually take a few albums for me to really get the bug though, to become the collecting geek forum poster i am today i guess.
these were the first Melvins tunes that I heard:
NightGoatHOB092100.mp3
WeReachCM101400.mp3
WispyCM101400.mp3
WithTeethCM101400.mp3
It sounded like one continuous meat-house. The drums were the thing that got into me head. Catchy as fog!
Then: Houdini > 10 Songs.
I was a big Fantomas fan so I eventually got around to buying the Big Band cd. My brother had always said the Melvins sucked cause he bought Honky and saw them open for Tool and I guess I just ignored them because there is way to much other music out there to check out every band. I remember Mombius Hibatchi being cool as hell on MM so I wanted my brother's copy of Honky. I offered to buy it from him but ended up just giving it to me for free. I loved it! I still can't figure out why he hated it so much. Needless to say I don't trust his taste in music anymore.
Which strangley enough is how I got into High on Fire. I knew Joe Preston was in them and my friend saw them and said they sucked. I didn't trust his taste so I downloaded Surrounded by Theives and loved it. It was a good move.
"HOSTILE AMBIENT TAKEOVER" . . .
what a great place to start . . .
then i went "THE MAGGOT" and "PIGS OF THE ROMAN EMPIRE" . . .
I spent a long time avoiding the Melvins because some rock book I had described them as a 'boy-rock' band, meaning they were dumb guy music for people to headbang to, basically. Then, about 2 years ago, the only record store in my town was having a giant going-out-of-business sale, and the only Melvins album they had left was 'Bullhead' for something like 7 bucks. It had such a badass album cover (with the basket of fruit and all) that I decided to pick it up (it also didn't hurt that my band's drummer at the time gave it his approval as a 'very heavy record.') I was blown away by how ridiculously slow the music was and it instantly changed my style of guitar playing. Obviously the Melvins aren't dumb-guy rock, and I've since bought Houdini, Stoner Witch, Ozma, and downloaded the shit I couldn't find in stores. Still, Bullhead is my favorite because how many songs are there where an evil-sounding dude bellows 'Like somebody took a coat hanger and munched it.' At least, that might be what Buzzo says...
Crybaby was mine. I still love that album. Weird introduction to Melvins I suppose seeing as it's all guest stars but it grew on me and I still listen to it. I had heard Hooch, Queen and Instant Larry on rock shows before but never got round to buying anything by them.
Bullhead in jr high. Friend had it on cassette and I heard it one day and the rest is history. And it didn't hurt that I lived in Montesano.....At least there were a few other maniacal fans besides myself.
Houdini. Took me awhile to get into it. It's not up there with my fav's.
Houdini. (Hooch was the reason why I got hooked)
Lysol and Maggot are the favourites today.

ideally, the one they play at my funeral.
And which one would that be? I'd be interested to know what music people were listening to before they discovered the Melvins and how (if at all) their musical tastes have changed since.

good question. what were you listening to when you discovered melvins? the most popular answer as of late might be tool. 90's it might have been nirvana.
how about this question: assuming your favorite band is currently melvins, what were your favorite bands building up to the melvins take-over?
I had a lot of strange ones...
KISS
Van Halen
Black Sabbath
Motorhead
Talking Heads
Kraftwerk

pretty good bands if you ask me. (historically speaking) I can see the progression to MELVINS.
going back to about the 7th grade... I'd have to say:
iron maiden
metallica
slayer
sex pistols
butthole surfers
the jesus lizard
off the top of my head.
Pixies, Nirvana, Dinosaur Jr, FNM, Ramones, Strokes, Libertines, ATDI and drum & bass. No metal.
Melvins lead me to some stuff like Thrones, Earth, Flipper, but more importantly: an open mind; changed my perspective on music and more.

Interesting. I went through a period in highschool where all I listened to was metal. Shit like cryptopsy, quo vadis, cannibal corpse, metallica, slayer, tool etc... It was at that point that I picked up stonerwitch and houdini. However I didn't really start getting into the melvins until I stopped listening to metal(first year of uni). And now that I love the melvins I'm starting to listen to more and more metal(boris, hof, mastodon, big business, karp)
When I realy got into the melvins I was listening to stuff like modest mouse, black rebel motorcycle club, the who, pavement and joy division.
I forgot about my New Order, Joy Division, Happy Mondays phase.
That was in college.

I listened to a lot of Ministry...
some guy on another forum liked a lot of the same prog rock that I liked :D (as opposed to the prog rock I don't like ) said he liked the Melvins. Judging by what I'd read of the music I didn't get how he liked it, but eventually I got Stoner Witch. Good shit. Also got Houdini but am unsure what else to hear next.

Gayer than Iron Maiden? :-&
I went to see them with a friend on the Stoner Witch tour, and was blown away... The next day I bought Stoner Witch, and in the following two weeks picked up Houdini, Lysol, Eggnog, & Bullhead.... It took a little while for me to find Ozma & Prick back in those days...
For me it was Bullhead and Ozma equally. A friend took me to see them around 90 or so and I was promptly astounded. Never seen or heard anything like it. Overall, if I had to pick an LP, Lysol would probably be the masterpiece to me.
I know this thread is old. I'm new. You will now give me a break.

Couldn't have described it better...
I was listening to a lot of Dinosaur jr., Pixies, Primus, Therapy?, Alice In Chains, Sonic youth and Nirvana when I was younger. I then discovered old school punk (dead kennedys, black flag, circle jerks, flipper) when I was about 16-17, which was when I really started to get into the melvins as well (first album Ozma/Gluey).
ever since my musical range varies from heavy stuff like napalm death, pantera (especially "the great southern trendkill") and (anything by) the melvins, to gay pop such as belle and sebastian, to dub (GG project) to classical (mozart, bethoven) to latin and percussions... but mostly Melvins... atm I've got ziggy stardust playing on my cd player.
I was around 16 or 17. Tool was my favorite band. I was going through the transcendence of Lateralus' influence. My good friend was strating to branch out while I was still obsessed with Tool. He burned me Tomahawk's self-titled album, which I liked more, and Hostile Ambient Takeover. A couple months later, I can't stop listening to HAT. I branch out to Mike Patton, to John Zorn, to Yamatsuka eYe, and to everything else. I come back maybe a year later and discover that The Melvins are one of the best bands ever.
The maggot is the first I ever owned.
I'd heard more through a friend who played them at bonfires but I can't remember which I heard first. Either way he ended up selling me Eggnog, Lysol, 26 and GPT for 20 bucks for all of them. The maggot holds a special place as my first melvins album owned though haha.
I bought Stoner Witch and Houdini at the same time. About a week or two after Stoner Witch had come out. Next one I bought was Lysol and it was only one track and I had paid 15 bucks for it and I was pissed! I copied it to tape and then became addicted to it. I think I bought Bullhead or Your Choice Live after that, I can't remember.
my life revolved around skateboarding in the late 90's and songs used in skate video soundtracks were often times my first glimpse of bands i would later become a fan of. Melvins were one such band. first i heard about 30 seconds of Sweet Willy Rollbar in Rodney vs. Daewon. i didn't really like it much, the vocals especially being a turn off for me. then came their version of Lexicon Devil in Foundation's Nervous Breakdown video. i liked it a lot, as i did the rest of the video's punk-centric soundtrack. then i heard Honey Bucket in All Systems Go, and i was blown away. i would play that part of the tape and not even watch the skating sometimes, i just wanted to hear that song. i then checked out Houdini hoping to find 13 Honey Buckets on the album and was sorely mistaken. much time then passed and i started listening to better music, and after seeing that there was a Melvins member in Fantomas, a band that i am a big fan of, i gave Houdini a second chance and i've been hooked since...
Cool. I guess I haven't really thought about someone going from a Melvins side-project fan to a Melvins fan instead of vice-versa. I like that though. Shows the greatness of everyone. So much musical input and views. I wish we could start our own damn country sometimes. I could use some company around here.
Yeah. I think i got into Melvins through Fantomas. First album i bought was Stoner Witch.
I actually bought Houdini on yellow cassette, without knowing the Nirvana connection. I saw "Honey Bucket" on headbanger's ball of all things. After hearing "Night Goat" I was hooked. After that I found a used copy of the Deep Six comp (which led me to Skin Yard as well as more Melvins) and a used 10 songs CD, back before the glory days of finding everything on the internet... this was real hardcore record shopping the old fashioned way.
I'm kind of a brand new fan. I had known their name for a few years, but then I saw Beck's "Beercan" video which features a guest appearance by Buzzo, and I had no clue who he was at the time, and somebody said that that guy was Jack Black, but then someone told that guy to go to the link, so I decided to check 'em out, and I saw some clip of the band watching music videos. First they watch some of Madonna's "Like A Virgin", then fast forwarded to the "Beercan" video. I was curious about the group, so I looked them up, but then I was afraid to check them out, because people were calling them grunge, and Kurt Cobain was involved with them, and also produced songs on "Houdini", but then I watched the videos for "Hooch" and "Honey Bucket", and didn't think it was that bad, and I thought they sounded more metal than grunge, so I decided to buy a used copy of "Houdini" and said "Fuck it, I don't care if the people who know I don't like grunge start nagging me saying 'WTF?' things and stuff like that.".
started with OZMA, bullhead, & Eggnog. favorite band ever since. probably listen to Honkey, Mangled Demos and the Maggot the most. that will change soon since i cant stop listening to ASA. like HAT and 26 songs too. seen em 4 times. missoula 2x , potland 2x
'91 back when i was seeing a lot of shows nirvana, pj, alice in chains, metallica, tribe after tribe, metallica , then later helmet, neurosis , seaweed all stand out - but nothing was really heavy enough. then in Oregon if found FLoater and Sleep . ahhhhh.
like me some tool and norma jean and even a little mastadon and Shadows Fall, but mainly only heavier shit now. boris, high on fire, big biz, porn all do it for me but the melvies are king shit. this board "sure is dope" and i thank you all. never thought there were so many real fans but i am pretty isolated. nice know there is a capable army out there.
