Title: Buzz's Guitar Setup
Post by: nightgoat1 on November 11, 2006, 05:22:32 PM
Anyone have any detailed info on Buzz'z setup? Looks like he was using an Orange head through A hiwatt 4x12 cabinet and there were some rackmounted effects off to the side.. thats about all I saw.

When I saw him, looked like he was using a rack with two Sunn power amps (don't remember the model), and his pedals were a Turbo Rat, a noise supressor, and something else, I forget. He also ran it all through a 4x10 (or 12) Hiwatt cab, and two little 1x10 cabs. He also more shit in his rack, but I couldn't read the makes on anything.

EDIT: Now that I think about it, one of the other pedals he used was also a tuner. Now if I could remember his fourth pedal...

I havent seen this live yet, but from what Ive seen on pictures , I can say that I think Buzz uses his rackset and the Hiwatt cab and NOT the Orange one. I think its put up that way to confuse, hehe.

All the whiny emo bands around here use Orange amps. How they afford them is beyond me. There's even a venue here called Orange Street that has nothing but crappy bands. Actually, if I think about it, the venue are probably the ones that own the amps.

Awesome. I have to pick one up sometime. My theory is that if I see my favorite musicians using something, I have to check it out. My Digitech DF7 pedal has a rat clone on it, but I'm sure it ain't like the real thing. Funny, I was printing out tabs when I noticed you had posted this Conda!

I ended up buying a Sunn Beta Lead thanks to seeing that Buzz used one (I wanted a Sunn amp for awhile though, so what better than one Buzz used?). The thing is a fucking BEAST.

Also, Digitech doesn't make anything close to the original like they say they do. I still like the multi-effects pedal they made. Nice and cheap. Too bad it sounds like shit at high volumes.

Yeah you are right. The Digitech is cool to goof around on, but you ain't gonna see any professionals using it on stage! Looks like Buzz likes BOSS products, too. The Sunn beta lead sounds bad ass.

Idlehanz, I wasn't dissing the primate just pooping in my hand and throwing it out the bars at you!

I tried out a proco rat (may have been a turbo... cant remember) at the local music shop and almost bought it, but i tried out a boss fz2 hyperfuzz and was instantly hooked... plus it was cheaper. Im going to see the melvins tomorrow so ill try to get some pics of the current rigs, BB included.

no promises though, the gypsys pretty tough on cameras. also, has anyone ever used a dod buzz box? I can find very little information on it, seems to be a fuzz box with a random octave effect.

According to Buzz it sounds like a vacuum cleaner.  Personally, I've not been able to play through one.

I had a dod grunge pedal when i started playing guitar... I remember the instruction book having a setting that "gives a tone similar to the melvins" and i was like cool that band nirvana hung out with! (not knowing the awesomeness that is the melvins at the time) I put it on that setting and was like.... dude i bet that band sucks. Id probably really enjoy that tone now though.

I saw one on Ebay, wanted to get it, but it was $300. $300 just doesn't seem worth it for a (purposely) shitty pedal.

Ok, walmart screwed me. Buzz let me get reallyy good pics of his rig, he let me jump on stage during soundcheck and snap a few, but for some reason I dont have the pedal board pic. but I did get what they were going through on my phone.

Buzz had his Black Les Paul custom, going into a boss chromatic tuner, a boss overdrive most likely an os-2, a boss delay, and a proco turbo rat into an orange head and a hiwatt cab.
He didnt use the delay much, I think it was mostly for dale when he played with business.

He used the overdrive for a crunchy sound, and the boss and rat together for the sound I call "really fuckin awesome" :D/

now for the fun stuff: Jareds rig

All the pics of jared ive seen, he plays p basses, but at the gypsy he used 2 Squier(!?) Jazz basses, one black with a white pickguard and one with a black to red fade. his pedals were a boss tuner, an orange morley splitter/tripler pedal whose three switches were labeled sunn 1, gk, and sunn2, and a korg toneworks guitar multi-effect pedal(yes, the one for like 85 buck at your local guitar shop).

Dale was using a les paul gold top, dunno what kind, had humbuckers and he used Buzz's rig, and he used the delay more than buzz.

I fuckin swear i got more and better pics, but this is what i got when walmart developed them. stuff thats missing includes most of the men of porn pictures, Buzzs pedals (thats why I didnt bother getting the names of his pedals, I thought I got a pic), some drunk guy getting elbowed... fuck disposable cameras.

I could've sworn that Buzz wasnt playing through the Orange head at the Hell's Kitchen show.  Dale played a goldtop through the Orange with Big Business but Buzz had a large rack with what looked like Sunn rackmounted amps.  Does anyone else remember this?  It was to the left of the Hiwatt cabinet on stage.

Hey all!  Long time listenner, first time caller, so to speak.  I know this is a thread for Buzzo's rig, but I thought someone out there would like this info as well.  I was at the Tempe, AZ show last night.  The show completely rocked!  The dueling drummer thing is unbelieveable!  Anyway, I was behind the sound board, and I saw a pedal board sitting on top of the sound board, and it was getting used for vocal effects and random noises during and after the Melvins' set.  I don't know what the order of devices was, because they were all sitting kinda around and on top of each other.  There was a Monotonic Labs Type U73 synth pedal, an Electro-Harmonix Frequency Analyzer (I think), a Crowther Prunes and Custard, an MXR Blue Box, and a Schumann PLL.  That's a pretty crazy batch of pedals (and expensive too), but that's where some of the gut-wrenching noises come from at the end of the set.

kevin did the same thing too, i think its to be
a bit more loose on stage, you can improvise a
new patch and hear it better if you face the amp,
if it sucks you can stomp off it to something else
quicker

I play with my pedals in front of the amp somply because most shows I've played there was no stage and thats when people start tripping on your shit and turning things on and off.

I guess i'll be the the first to ask a drum question: i've noticed that Coady used a very generic looking snare in some earlier photos of Big Business. It's like aflat gray snare with some big gold lugs. Anybody know what make it is?

Hey guitar geeks!!  I just bought a Boss DS1 distortion and a Boss SD1 Super Overdrive today. Anyone have experience with these, and how do they go in my pedal string. Do I put the overdrive first (guitar, overdrive, distortion, amp) or second behind the distortion? I don't remember. Also, is that an SD1 Overdrive that Buzz has in his pedal setup this tour?

I dont remember Exactly what yellow od pedal he was using, but it definitely had 4 knobs.

As for the ds1, congrats on getting one of the best and cheapest pedals around. I use my ds1 second in line, right after my chorus. I set the distortion all the way up, wit htone around 12-2 oclock, level all the way up most of the time. Ill post my "rig" pic, if you cant call a 120 watt combo a rig  :|

I use an SD2 Dual Overdrive and a DS1. I have the overdrive before  the distorion (tuner, overdrive, flanger, distortion, acoustic simulator).  I don't really use the flanger or acoustic simulator though.

Cool. I have my MXR chorus after my distortion. Is there any rule for this? Maybe I'll switch stuff around and see what difference it makes. Got the DS1 new for $38 at the local music store. Not a bad deal.

Its all a matter of taste man. Whatever you think sounds best, is best.

Are you sure it was a Turbo Rat, or was it a Rat 2??

Yeah I guess I did!  :o It was mentioned that Crover was using the delay that is in Buzz's rig. What was he using it for? I don't remember hearing it during any of the BB songs.

He could have been using it as a really really short delay, just to make his tone thicker. I do that sometimes. He might, too. But unless he was using it for that, I don't remember hearing it either.

Buzz uses the strings from a grand piano for his guitar and then usually tunes it down a half step.  Even bass guitar strings are not heavy enough for him.

your thinking of Stevie Ray Vaughn.

I posted his setup a while back, Its around here somewheres.

for the latest tour he was using a boss delay>boss overdrive>proco TURBO rat> boss tuner into an Orange head and a hiwatt cab.

I dunno what kind of strings he uses, but I remember reading somewhere that he doesnt really care.

hope that helps.

Ernie Ball guitar strings are both cheap, comfortable and last forever.  I've never broken a string.  Also, Dead Cowboy, in the thread concerning Buzz's Rig (Name of thread for those searching) it was agreed that the Orange head belonged to Tim Moss and was set atop the Hiwatt cabinet turned on to screw with fans while Buzz played into some rackmounted Sunn amps.

I prefer GHS boomers, theyre brighter, and since I play a Tele I figure why not be as trebly as possible. As for the rig discussion I guess I didn't pay attention to that part.  Next time I see em live, ill just bug the hell out of all of them and get as much info as possible... maybe I could bring a tape recorder and have myself a little interview.

I had a boss delay reverb from 1985 so I bought the rat but no boss overdrive and no mr phaser...tried rat out, put it in a marshall full stack infused  with patriot speakers, cranked it to 130 db.

and belted out pigs of the roaman empire instead of metallica like the rest of the assholes in the store.....at the end of it they gave it to me new  for 25$ had to drive all the way up to middletown ny to get it so i diserved a break

This is Buzz's pedal setup from '97, he's sure changed alot. I doubt you'd see him using
Tremolo nowadays. Anyways, I thought I'd share it for you rabid types out there. :P

Anaconda, as far as you know were these the settings he used?
Pretty intersting because the distortion on the Rat is set really low while the volume and on the Rat and Mxr micro amp is set almost on full, makes sense that he switched to a turbo rat since it double the output of a normal one. Leading me to think that most of his distortion sound is coming from overdriving the amp, which in most cases seems to be the solid state transistor Sunn amp he has. Kind of unusual!

At ATP he was using some new looking Laney head and cab, surprisingly it sounded great. Better than the marshall JCM900 he was using when i saw them on the ATP Houdini gig.

I snapped the pic just before they soundchecked, this was where the settings were when the
crew set up his gear, he did however manipulate them for a good 1/2 hr afterwards. I also tried to
get close during the actual show to see his performance settings but the pit was too fierce.

I think you may be right about him achieving distortion by overdriving the amp though,
because they dipped into a noise/improv section in the middle of the show and it was squalls
of white noise, you could even hear his amp picking up a radio station at times!

Description of the DOD Buzz box from Ebay:

Whoever gets this thing is lucky. 4 knobs, Heavy (Bass, 2 octaves down), Buzz (Distortion), Thrust (Level), Saw (Treble). This is similar to MXRs blue box but with more balls. The Buzzbox rips, farts, screeches, swirls, spatters, chugs, cuts out like a stopping motorbike, buzzes, does synth tones, dual octaves, mess, sizzle, whine.
