Title: Melvins 12/30
Post by: blacksanta on December 18, 2006, 04:27:01 PM
Gosh, the Melvins twice in one calender year. I'll be thinking of you all. My review will go here. Think my kid is too young (seven)? He wants to go and I'm considering it.

At least provide him a good set of earplugs!

How about 3 times in 4 days? :D
I must have seen them 5 times this year, and I'm not even American.
Just like it should be!

Oh, bring the kid, make sure he's got earplugs.

Sure, bring the youngster, but like everyone said, bring the earplugs.  Good ones.

Plus, if it's the entire circus playing, the kid may get tired from standing all night.

But I'm sure you have thought of all this stuff before.

We'll probably stand in the back and I'll put him on my shoulders. Def. be packing the plugs.I think the doors are at 8, just to prevent him from getting tired legs (and a sore back for me) maybe we'll go in at 9:30.

WRONG!  You've gotta stand right by the stage.  At that age, those youngsters are really light, and you can toss em on stage, or let em go crowd surfing.  The kid will love it.

I think I told this story before but I once saw Social Distortion and the singer guy, whats-his-face, asked for the youngest kids in the place.  the crowd picked up 2 kids, 5 and 7 (ish) and surfed them to the stage.  mom didn't seem to have any problem with that at all.   looking around an average "punk" show, I don't know if I would dig my kids being manhandled by a bunch of yahoos at 6' off the ground.

my wife and i saw the melvins in 2000 when she was about 7 months pregnant. i remember reading some quote around that time where buzzo said he wanted to perform music that actually induced abortions, and fortunately this was not the case....although she was born a month early.

Only if she listens to them (which, knowing her, I would have to say no).  I wish you two would come out for New Years, the wives could hang out and we could go to the show.  Saddly, that's the only way I'm going to be there.  :(

You should play bullhead through head phones, and put the headphones on your wife's belly.  That's a recipe for one cool baby.

I'm lucky enough to have a wife who will also be seeing her 2nd melvins show this year.  We've seen 5 shows together, though I don't really think she liked them much the first time around (she asked to leave early because of a headache).  Since then I've been playing so many melvins albums that she really has no choice but to sing along.  She thought the senile animal show was great and shes wants to see em again on the 30th.  I think I picked the right woman ;)

Damn.

Show started at 9pm  Finished at 1:20 am.  Hot Sauce opened.  Very funny.  Red Fang was next.  They were good.  Not sure what they remind me of at the moment, but they remind me of someone.....Hot Sauce came back out again and played some James Brown.  Very over with the crowd.  Porn was next, Santa and Elvis came out.  Dale had a doughnut, and started fingering it.   Ate some and threw the rest in the crowd.  Melvins sound guy, whose name I forget right now played bass.  He was sporting a nice suit.  Looked like a history teacher at a college.  They fukkin made a hellacious noise.  Some 15-20 minute noise that was very cool.  Great songs.  The sets didn't flow like they have on the rest of the tour.  Breaks between Porn and BB, but then right into Melvins.  Big Business was awesome.  Dale came out 3 songs in and played geetar.  I never realized how good of a player he is.  Someone threw a penny onstage and Jared says "So you think your cute huh?.  Dale picked it up and threw it at Jared.  Jared says "So you think your cute huh?" to Dale.  Dale laughed....pretty funny.  BB was monsterous.  Buzz came out for the last BB song as usual.  Normal Melvins set except for they threw in Night Goat, which made the Roseland go totally apeshit.

Sorry for this being scattered and short, but I'm fried.  My ass was in a little wooden chair ( in the balcony, so I could film) for over 4 hours....It's still asleep.  Rode down with MrKilgore and met Smellis.  Another member was there getting audio, but I forgot his name.  Sorry dude.  There was 3 of us filming in all, and the audio guy.  All from the balcony, all next to each other.  All in all, I can't fucking wait for tomorrow night.  And the merch was pretty empty.  Got tonites poster, and the Tara Mcpherson from the Houston show, both signed, and a shirt.  I won't be able to sleep.

Some little details I forgot to mention.  Buzz's guitar was fairly quiet for the first few songs.  They got that figured out thankfully.  Jared has some pedal problems during the BB set and during the last song, when Buzz came out to play.   Moss came out n fixed it up for him.  Think we spotted Ritchie, but we weren't sure.  Dales wife was walking around for a bit with their baby.  Saw some pretty young kids there too.  Probably 9-11 years old or so.  It was an all ages show.....Bullshitted with the merch guy and Smellis for a while.  When MrKilgore and I showed up, the place was pretty empty.  Filled up more so as the night went on.   By the time BB started, it was packed.  I'm sure there's more to say, but I should try to sleep.  Gotta get up somewhat early and head for Seattle.

After watching my filming of the show, it isn't great.....Not bad, just not what I was hoping for.  Pretty dark.  I did watch it in my hotelroom in Seattle on a nice flat screen tv, and it looked better though.  As far as a 3 cam dvd Beto, we were all sitting right next to each other.  Wouldn't be much difference in the video, cept maybe quality.  I did a few zooms, and I don't think Mrkilgore did.  I know his quality will be better than mine though.  We'll have to wait n see.

I just realized that if I plug straight into the tv, the picture is much better.  Now I have to see if I can record that way instead of plugged into my dvd recorder.

The only gift I am wishing for is a show with Beto in attendance.

Anyhoo, the reviews so far have hit the nail on the head. I'll just make a few notes here.

-Funny how I was wearing my haunted mansion t shirt. When I ran into Buzz before the show he compliemented me on it, Disney geeks unite!

- The crowd was really weird. I'm not sure what to make of it. It's like they were half way there. Men of Porn were  unknown to most of the crowd and I was laughing my ass off with the yells of "You SUCK! Dale C is a better drummer!" Is KUFO playing them in town?!? My dad was reminded of FZ and dug their set!

- Speaking of family, my boy loved it. But jesus, My neck was killling me. Until this show, I was never used to being totally sober and spending the whole show with leg cramps and sweating enough to make peoples around me slip. And staring at the floor.

-Red fang is more Tad than Tad.

-Set list is the same as the tour EXCEPT: - Revolve & Mechanical Bride  + Night Goat

Yeah there were definitely a lot of morons in the crowd for sure. The pit was esp. rowdy for a MELVINS gig, I think there were people who went there just to pound each other for lack of anything else better to do. Where were you watching the show Blacksanta? Kilgore spotted what appeared to be a family at the show, before it started and said, ' look 3 generations ' or something similar.  Must have been you Santa?  Were you holding a boy on your shoulders in the middle of the crowd as the show ended?

i was thinking the exact same thing.  i don't think i've been to a melvins show where there was  pit bigger than that.....and their was a bunch of idiots in it.  people would "fall" down(more like get  shoved) and nobody would help them up, just keep on bangin into each other.  i've seen some people get pretty screwed up form gettin trampled on, not pretty.

Looks doubtful.  I put up a thread on GP and know one there knew.  Richie also said that he didn't know who did them, so there's no one to even contact on them.  I'd bet Moss is about the only guy that would be able to offer any leads.

QuoteKilgore spotted what appeared to be a family at the show, before it started and said, ' look 3 generations ' or something similar.  Must have been you Santa?  Were you holding a boy on your shoulders in the middle of the crowd as the show ended?

Yeah, that was me! It was cool, he bought a small T-shirt with his Christmas money. I think that will be my Mom's first and last Melvins show. She likes them, but in small doses. Gramma's presence was insurance that my son's mom wasn't going to freak out too much. When he came back in one piece excited about the show, I saw her worries disappear. Pops went online and ordered some BB and Porn after the show. I was worried about pissing people off behind me when I had him on shoulder, but we were towards the back and there was plenty of room around where we were.

Did your dad have a long whiteish/grayish billy gibbons beard and sit in the balcony for a bit?  If that was him, he sat close to me and Kilgore, and Smellis .  I liked seeing that.  An older fella, enjoying the Melvins.

I'd like to get a clone of the miniDV tape(s) or AVI files (DV type2 is totally cool) so I can do a DVD of the show. :)

I'm gonna torrent my audience tonight probably. was going to last night, but was finishing up some d/l's of my own..

I'd like to do DVD's of the other PDX shows, but I need the video source (KILGORE!!!)

You haven't gotten a copy of your own poster?  It looks great.  I got a signed copy at the PDX show and it looks good on the wall :D  Well done.

hey richie,  are those "black-light" posters ever going to be for sale anywhere besides ebay?

I take it you can't control the sale of these, no?

I try to never handle sales. There are at least 2 poster dealers who will have some and the rest will go to the Melvins for them to do with as they please. Possibly in the Ipecac online store someday.

Lonestar's a great site, but sometimes their autographed posters are a tad expensive.

$200 is a rip off for a poster signed with all living members.  Stop being such a crybaby.  Since when were you opposed to people voicing their opinions?  If he sells it, cool, if he doesn't sell it, that's alright.

Crybaby? What the fuck are you talking about?

I call a spade a spade and I'm a crybaby?

If you don't wanna pay $200 bucks for a nonessential, useless, luxury item...then don't.

All these posters are fucking worthless anyways. Once I finish one it's done and thats it. I don't give a fuck what happens to them. Once someone attaches a monetary value to them...they instantly become worthless. There's gonna be a lot of bummed dumbass collectors with stacks of worthless paper in the near future.

by this post I assume you get paid upfront and have no involvement in profits based on consumer sales.
in other words...  once you made it you got your money and you don't give two fucks if one or one hundred sell.
I would think for simple exposure and name recognition you'd want them to spread far and wide though.

I don't know about that "worthless stacks of paper" thing though rich, these posters go for over face value on ebay everyday.
sometimes as much as $200!

I can't say why you would think that.  I paid my hard earned money for your poster to hang on my wall.  To me, these posters aren't worthless paper.  They are great art, from great artists, for a great band.  For myself and  alot of others, they are far from worthless.

I say what I say because if you enjoy owning it then that's great. That's the only true value it has. People who are somehow 'investing' in rock posters are gonna be bummed. Very few will retain any value

And...I personally don't make any money off doing posters. I don't ask for any money and I don't sell them on my own. I have other more lucrative ways to make money. I make posters for bands that I like because I enjoy it. I have fucking stacks of old posters that I've done just sitting here. The high is over for me after I've finished creating it. Once I've sent the files off to the printer...the thrill is gone.

I did that crazy expensive San Diego Melvins poster as a big fuck you to other poster artists. It was supposed to be a 'look what I did and you didn't!' The only thing that went wrong was that they didn't make it to the show. It was out of my control at the time, but I still take responsibility for that.

YEAH, what he said. Richie's posters are great, I would hope you make a little $$ from them but it's really not my business. People are going to buy shit that they like, who cares how much they pay it's up to the individual if you want to shell out the dough or not. Personally I can't afford $200.00 for  a poster but some people can so fuck it.
