Title: Melvins/Boris/Pelican Stubb's BBQ 3-15 2007
Post by: sinuendo on January 26, 2007, 01:23:00 AM
I hear this is an invite only show.  Who do I have to kill to get in??
This blows.  Why the fuck would they make it invite only?   More importantly, does
anyone have an invite to sell?  Is anybody even fucking going?

I try *TRY* to start conversations over there here and then....but, it always turns into a disaster.  That place sucks so bad now.  They always leave themselves open for so much ridicule.  I hope Primus never tours again.  Maybe those ass farmers will go the hell away.

As far as the show in question, I emailed the manager of Stubb's and he had no clue what I was talking about.  So, I sent him the link to the show off of the Pelican website:  http://www.hydrahead.com/pelican/_dates.html

March 15, 2007 - Austin, TX
Stubbs BBQ Inside
12:30 pm
SXSW Vice Party
Invite Only
w/ The Melvins, Boris, Panthers

What the heck is a vice party?  Those motherfuckers....  People spend their whole goddamn tax return on one armband for SXSW, and the fags go and have "invite only shows"!!!?!?!?!  seriously, wtf.

anyway, I'm still waiting for response.  Since it's past closing time there's no hope of sneaking in via the restaurant.  We may have to invest in a boom mike and a periscope.

I was hoping somebody would know what was up and have some info....maybe.......

I'll keep posting whatever I find out, but in the meantime I beg everyone to plummet Stubb's with email requests for tickets.  <restaurantmanager@stubbsaustin.com>, Maybe they'll see the finacial potentia of the showl and change their minds and/or inform the booking agent or whoever.  We can only try.

you are correct, straight from the source:

"I don't have the authority to admit people to invite only shows for clients.  I would attempt to find out what the Vice Party is and how to get invited.  It is out of the hands of Stubb's.  Sorry."

Time to kidnap this fucker.

Sweet. Dutch rockers Orange Sunshine are currently playing some shows there, also with Earthless. Made me feel very jealous, as both OS and Earthless are incredibly amazing.

rant alert.  don't read

vice magazine recently gave The Residents a "middle finger" for a review.
that magazine is pretty vile and foul and disturbingly "hisptery".  my roommate works at American Apparel and they get copies for free so i look through it now and then.  it pisses me off.
the residents review, for example:  RZ are pretty obscure, agreed?  if someone knows about the residents well enough to want to read a review, the odds are they know about them because they like them.  one doesn't find out about the residents, hate them, and then want to know all about their upcoming album.  writing a negative review for an obscure album is just a fucking dick thing to do.  someone will find out about this band they never heard of, just to see that the album "sucks"? lame.  only popular music should be reviewed badly - the type of music that someone will pick up on a whim because they have heard of the band.  that way, someone can find out about the negative aspects of an album and not bother getting it if they are so convinced.  nobody who doesn't know the residents is going to pick up "Tweedles" just because the album cover catches their eye.  and now they definitely won't because their hipster bible told them not to.
fuck vice and the community it supports/directs.

i don't know, there are a lot of shitty obscure bands out there that deserve bad reviews. as far as the residents go, they are kind of a band you can get into at any point in their time line, and if someone read a bad review and then decided to maybe check out some of their earlier stuff instead of starting with the newest one, that might be better than them hearing the newest one, going "god they suck" and never listening to their old shit. personally, i have heard a lot of residents albums and i really don't like much of it after the commercial album.
Title: Re: Melvins/Boris/Pelican Stubb's BBQ 3-15

a partial rant:

you're right, people should delve into the back catalog instead of judging the most recent work...
which is why vice should have said, "their most recent album sucks, but the stuff in the past is genius"  instead of (actual quotes here:) "i have no idea if this album is consistent with their back catalog or not and i aim never to find out." and stuff like, "this is a smug industrial rock record made in the early 90's mode by people pushing 50"  and "the residents are one of those bands everyone is aware of but no one under the age of 35 has ever heard"
okay so here's what we've learned:
1. if you're younger than 35, you're too cool to be bothered with stuff that is "before your time" or listened to people older than you
2. if you're over 50, you aren't allowed to make music that vaguely resembles anything made after (at least) 1990.
3. if you're anyone: only judge a band by their most recent album.

again.  Fuck Vice Magazine.

oh yea, and the co-founder was quoted saying, "I love being white and I think it's something to be very proud of, I don't want our culture diluted. We need to close the borders now and let everyone assimilate to a Western, white, English-speaking way of life."
ok.  now fuck vice magazine and its creators.

I work at Stubb's. Good luck on getting in..I'm the guy that throws you out.

If it's an invite-only party, here's the deal: Some group or company (in this case, Vice Magazine) buys out or rents the venue at a specific set price (how much, I don't know) and they pretty much say who gets in...either through a list, badge or specific ticket that they hand out.

In regards to the show itself, I haven't heard anything. But since it's happening during SXSW, it wouldn't surprise me if it DOES happen. We've had at least one show every year during SXSW that is "invite-only". Last year was Beastie Boys I believe. In any case, depending on how much Vice Magazine is willing to spend, determines whether the show is going to be inside (capacity: 350) versus outside (capacity: 2100).

You weren't supposed to let them know that we know each other, fuckface.

First Moss, and then a bouncer at a club. Who don't you know?

You?

That bouncer who I may or may not know may or may not do more things than simply bounce at Stubbs if in fact I did know him.

Or, they could just open the gates to anybody and sell normal tickets...you never know...

I have been to Vice events in NY. They are pretty good. There usually isn't any door hooplah with these parties. They are usually hidden in places on off nights during the week .  IE a restaurant back room that you wouldn't know it was there behind a kitchen or something.

I grew up with a guy who is a photographer for Vice and V mag as well as others. His name is Ryan Mcginley. IF you are about 6 foot 4 and 160 lbs u can pass for him. That will get you in anywhere lol.

YES!! whered you see this? sitting outside on the grass or on the bridge right by the stage is cool. i guess they could put something up to block the view but ive never seen them do that before. although that kind of faggotry isnt unheard of during sxsw.

I work at the venue where it's at. Dunno if you've been to an outside Stubb's show recently, but there are two venues at Stubb's...inside the restaurant and outside in the "courtyard"..You can't see the outside stage except for the courtyard or  unless you rent a room on the 10th+ story at one of the hotels down the street...you can still hear it though...

Some of you probably already know this, but since TIM MOSS doesn't want to deal with you plebes on this message board, I have been asked to relay the following info.

Firstly, the Melvins want their fans at the Stubbs show, so it will now be made easy for you to go if you so please. Go to http://www.scion.com/austin/ and do whatever it asks and you should be good to go.

Also. Porn SXSW info...straight from the sasquatch's mouth.

I been doing some hard work on this as well.   one problem though, a plane ticket will cost me about $400 to go and from wednesday through saturday.  it will cost me about $200 to go for an entire week.

lodging for a week?  OR   more expensive plane ticket for a shorter stay?

which is the lesser of two evils?
Title: Re: Melvins in Austin...Porn info as well

I found that a plane ticket cost more if I returned on sunday for some reason.  It was cheaper for me to return on either Saturday, or Monday.  I'll probably stay thru monday, since it will be St. Patricks Day weekend.  I also got tipped off to a hostel that's quite cheap.  I might just have to stay there.

i like the poster but the ads all over it kinda turn me off.  i don't ever want to see melvins and scion on the same page, and melvins+vice disturbs even further.

Explain to me what these two entities represent, and thusly why they're a problem. I've never heard of either to the best of my recollection.

Well, A Scion is a car and Vice is a magazine/record label. Very hip they are!

as Guts said, "very hip they are".
Vice magazine is hipster trash and the owner is a white supremacist
i don't really have a problem with Scions so much.
i just don't like the idea of a poster artist being forced to include sponsor's ads on their art.  it's similar to how the melvins don't want that PARENT WARNING slapped on the front of their beautiful covers.

Considering it's a free show, I think it's alright to see corporate big businesses pay the tab for people to see the melvins + others.  It's a poster commisioned by scion and vice, so they're at least going to put their names on advertising.
I agree with your sentiment, but I think it's far from true that Hampton was forced to put the logos on the poster.

Everyone has a logo these days. C'mon Vinny it's fun.
I also like how the Artist put his stylized Zorro 'H'
on there as well. You do nice graphic work Mr 'H'ampton.

This topic has the most detailed representation of the poster
by the way, the other 3 threads show earlier versions.

i understand it entirely and it's probably fine.  it just creeps me out a little to see "melvins" right next to "vice".  it creeps me out in the same way as when i see someone i respect and care about _reading_ the thing.  but the melvins should do what is best for the melvins, not what some loony like me thinks.  same applies to anyone i see reading vice.  where do i get off?

Welcome to the real world. Us professional artist type people are 'forced' to do shit we don't want to do all the time. It's called work. When there's money involved it's not happy fun do whatever we want fuck around time. We gots to get paid. Your misguided idealism is cute.

[I FOUND THIS ON ANOTHER FORUM]

http://www.donewaiting.com/sxsw/archives/2007/03/meet_the_melvin.php

Plus, this blog lists other parties with bands and gives you links if you need to sign up for the guest list.  Adding yourself to the guest lists is free, it's just to keep the crowds numbered and to try to include people who are into whatever company or label is sponsoring the band parties.
