Title: Live From London 2006 DVD
Post by: M i C H e L L e on December 17, 2007, 10:04:46 PM
(I don't think this has been posted yet?)
Taken from an interview with Mike Patton on http://www.movieweb.com/news/87/25087.php

Are you guys planning anything else? Are you planning to do the Mondo Cane or Peeping Tom DVDs?

Mike Patton: No plans. With Mondo Cane, someone filmed the performances but I haven't seen them yet. I have to admit. I am not crazy about music DVDs. Just the thought of sitting and watching a full concert, you know? From front to start is hard enough in person for me. Let alone on a fucking DVD. To me, unless the footage looks really spectacular...Unless it's a one-time project that I want to document, I have no burning desire to do concert DVDs. That being said, every now and again someone does something really cool. And the next one we will be doing after Patton/Kaada live is The Fantomas Melvins Big Band. That is a similar case. It was a friend of Buzz's, from the Melvins, that happened to be at one of the London shows. And he said, "Hey, I am going to do this whether you want it or not. You don't have to pay me, blah, blah, blah." I was like, "Okay. No harm. No foul." And he sent footage. It is fucking stunning. He did a bunch of visual effects. It is more than just a concert. There is animation in it. It is really well done. We will be putting that out in the summer of 2008.

Still, great news of course! Only about half a year left!

How true.  I'm a big Patton fan but he's become too infatuated with himself and silly vocal effects.  I moved on from dial-up in 2001, I don't need to hear that fucking annoying dial tone anymore.

I'm still itching for a Melvins multi-DVD collection with music videos, tons of live video, commentary, and interviews, but I heavily doubt Buzz has any plans for such a thing, unless somebody else can do all the work and he can still get paid nicely.

It seems strange; wouldn't the normal procedure be to 'pay the band' for filming?

I'm so looking forward to this coming out on DVD.

I seem to remember someone saying that they'd spotted people filming that show.... Oh yeah, it was me!!!! I spotted a few cameras floating around filming. But when I mentioned this on here someone reckoned I'd just spotted people filming on their digital cameras. I'd never posted on this board before that review so didn't want to get to stroppy with my replies, but I do know the difference between a digital camera and a camcorder.....

Anyways.... roll on the summer!!!!!

Will the commentary with Buzz and Danny Devito be an audio commentary track (that plays overtop of the concert footage) or a separately filmed interview with the group of guys at a round table or something?

I imagine the commentary will play over the convert footage, otherwise it would just be a chat or interview.

Artwork looks good.

This doesn't bode well for the audio being better than Millenium Monsterwork though:

QuoteWhilst doing this Matt, using a really crappy desk recording of the performance, had to pull audio from the cameras and mix together the show, I saw what he was doing a few times and it looked like a massive headache yet he did a brilliant job.

hopefully this is an optional bonus feature.   I'd like to NOT hear the commentary over the concert footage for the first 10 views or so.

where can I hear what Mikey did on PotRE?  Although I have some reservations: on the Millenium Monsterwork disc, I would have preferred to hear Buzz singing the Melvins tunes.  And when I saw Fantomas live in Boston on 4/13/05 and they played 4/10/05  (the song released on the ipecac website with obviously Buzz singing) Mike took over on vocals.  Please tell me where I can hear Patton's contribution to Buzz's epic riffage, thanks.

I thought they played more Suspended Animation stuff on that tour, but I cannot wait for this to be released anyway since the Big Band never came down here.
...Well they were all down here on the Australian Geek Show tour, but no BigBand- though Patton stayed out for the first song of The Melvins set after the changeover.

Watching this now.
Got to say I'm disappointed in the video quality. The balcony shots look like a washed out 2nd gen VHS recording, and a lot of the other shots are very grainy (probably due to the low lighting in the venue).
The editing is irritating - lots of edits and "special effects" like distorting the picture and playing with focus - wow!
Plus it hasn't been authored properly so that if I'm playing it on a screen with an aspect ratio of 4:3 it displays with black bars at the top and bottom as well as on the side but when I set my TV to 16:9, it doesn't fill the entire screen, instead it distorts the picutre - very annoying.
That said, the audio is pretty good, despite there being a few glitches and I'm particularly enjoying watching Dale and Dave go at it on drums.

Overall though, it looks pretty amateurish.

:(

I enjoyed it, got it yesterday watched it a bunch of times its a show i could of gone to but it was the same day as my second year final which if i hadn't of been at i would of failed that year and had to resit so i missed out but least i get to see it now.
It is a bit amateurish and like the guy has finally found the effects bit on imovie but ahh well i like it.

The editor did an audio mix, combining the sound from the camcorder and the sound from the mini-tape recorder.  It took hours of painstaking work, but he got it sounding great!
how do you know it sounds greaT? have you listened to it mi ster lee roy

I did the sound (and one of the cameras) on the DVD, and yes, it took a stink load of time to get it sounding sweet.   The desk recording was in mono, and totally illegible in places - I had to add the sound from 3 cameras, and spent 3 months mixing, chopping and editing, so I'm glad you like the way it sounds dude.

Space Farm isn't entirely correct with the equipment used - we used a WWII Box Brownie camera,  crayons, and some mirrors.  Lots and lots of mirrors...

It's pretty good, although I wish the director would step back a bit more often and let us see the show. Also, the DVD really needs less Mike Patton (who comes across as being the exact opposite of cool) and more King Buzzo.

The chance to see these players live in the comfort of my living room is good, but Patton ruined this for me. I know Fantomas is Patton's band, but it's as if he IS the show. What does Patton do live? Plays samples, babbles into a microphone and points at people as if to say "I'm allowing you to play now, you're welcome". The last thing a Melvin's song needs is slick yelling ooooohhhhyyyaaawwwwwww in the middle of it. One thing I noticed is how physical Mr. Dale Crover was on his kit compared to Lombardo. Lombardo's a great drummer, and sounded good, but seemed out of his element playing along with Dale's style. Dale was just INTO it. It always amazes me how varied Buzz's playing sounds while his hands are using fairly simple shapes on the fret board. A good lesson in K.I.S.S. And to reiterate, fuck Patton.

OK, I may have sounded a bit over excited in my last post. I hear what your saying about Patton. What I do like is seeing Buzz, Dale and DSS playing, and the commentary with Buzz's goofy laugh. Patton does exude an attitude that is very foreign to anything I have ever seen connected to the Melvins. I guess I have to trust Buzz on this one, he must know what the hell he's doing. But yeah, it is hard to watch at times, some of my favorite Melvins tunes altered with unintelligible screaming.

interesting discussion, remember when i saw them i noticed that too.Lombardo, who obviously is a great drummer, did nothing or nothing of special on the Melvins songs,Dale was the opposite on the Fantomas songs.

Bought this today. Was pretty underwhelmed. Patton completely ruins this performance. If he wasn't there - it would have been splendid! Sir David Scott Stone was the highlight of the entire performance. He is 1,000,000,000 times more sick that Patton. Seriously, if it was a performance without Patton - I would have loved this. He is just too damn cheesy.

I loved that part :)

I worked at that same Taco Bell, and after reading "Come As You Are", I liked working there a little more.

As far as Pattor ruining the performance.....I disagree.  I see his role as vital as the rest of the bands.  He uses his voice as an instrument.  He uses pedals to tweak his voice like a guitar player would use a pedal to tweak his guitar sound.  During the Fantomas songs, he seemed like a present day Lawerence Welk, conducting the band, helping them keep the time changes and so on.  Letting them know when he was going to scream, and so on.  I seem to be in the minority on it, but I dug the hell out of this dvd.

To each his own taste. There are crappy Melvins bootleg videos from '89 that I've enjoyed intensily, much better than Slayer's Reign In Blood dvd, which is, I guess, excellent quality.

But of course, Slayer ain't Melvins. I guess if you're looking for a quality Melvins live dvd, start downloading a few from DaD or make a trade with Idlehanz or Beto, because I don't see Buzz & Dale and the boys releasing a Melvins dvd any time soon.

To me this illustrates a point.  For all the accusations of the Melvins just trying to make a dollar from the fans, they don't seem to put out the obvious money makers like DVD's or "best of's".

There's a local music TV channel here in Australia called Channel V. I mean this is a channel that has The Grates speacials and Pussycat Dolls specials, hell right now they're probably playing Chris Brown or someone. Anyway, they recorded Fantomas live playing Director's Cut with a  professional soundboard recording and widescreen HD cameras. They played it too.

My point is strange things can happen, and I really think Melvins will one day release a HQ live set. I hope it covers all the bassists though, not just one set. A supermassive best of DVD.  That'd be nice...8)

Did you happen to record it?

You can't record it unless you have the right equipment (It's pay TV). Even if I had the equipment the channel only played it once and I missed the beginning anyway. It was completely out of left field to play something like Fantomas on this channel. Never seen anything like it....except many years ago they had Tomahawk on.

The set was great though...they were all wearing cricket gear which was funny. Expect Buzz.
