Title: The Melvins Comic Book
Post by: Greasy Statement on January 21, 2008, 08:57:29 PM
http://www.hydraheadlines.blogspot.com/

apparently the fun idea they're doing with this is putting out a comic book based on the album. there's a link to the cartoonist's blog. that would explain why this is taking a while....

I just read this at http://hydraheadlines.blogspot.com/2008/01/melvins-comic-book.html

Quote from: http://iwilldestroyyounews.blogspot.com/2008/01/world-is-full-of-evil.htmlMy pals over at Hydra Head Records are putting out a fancy, limited edition vinyl version of "(a) senile animal" by The Melvins. They had the bright idea of asking me to do a comic book inspired by the album. Having been a HUGE and LONGTIME fan of The Melvins, I of course said "Hell Yeah!"

Above is the first page that I inked today. The whole comic will be 22 pages long. In keeping with the surreal nature of the band, the story is quite strange. Instead of trying to interpret the album, I used the song titles as inspiration for the characters (such as: A Talking Horse, The Civilized Worm, and Blood Witch) and then wrote a story around them.

I'll post some more updates as I go along with this project.

holy shit thanks for posting that blog, I never knew it existed and because of that I was able to grab a Khanate shirt and hoodie off their ebay store for semi-legit prices considering how old that merch has to be. I'm like speechless, I've only been a fan of the Khanate/Sunn/etc. since 2007 and have wished I could have grabbed a shirt or two after looking at old designs on ideologic and I finally have some!

edit: also I wonder if these pics on the hh main page might be some of the characters, looks sort of similar: http://www.hydrahead.com/

design aside, wait til you see the "quality" of the shirt itself. you'll know why they had extras.

okay, this bit of Melvinry is cool and all, but I am not buying (a)SA when it comes out on vinyl because I think the whole idea of one sided LPs is ridiculous. You know HH is gonna charge something like 40-50 bones for this. Just gimme the comic book, I say.  the artwork looks cool as hell.

I agree, one sided vinyl is a bit strange. Put a live show on there or something.
outtakes, bloopers, alternative mixes or an interview, anything.

It must be a collector nerd thing to have one side.

wonder if thats HH's idea or MELVINS.

could be MELVINS request in order to present (A)SA as it was meant to be presented, one piece of work w/ no break.

ok, now I understand! I thought they were going to try and squeeze it all onto
one single side of LP vinyl by lathing micro thin grooves. Real head scratcher there.

Classic Records is an audiophile label that reissues a lot of classic rock (The Who, Led Zep, etc) on one sided LPs. They also tend to split hairs and issue the same remastered recordings in 33rpm and 45 rpm  ](*,) I guess for people who need to hear the difference or whatever.

I wouldn't be surprised if (a)SA gets released as single sided LPs with an etching on the other side. This would defeat the "audiophile" nature of these particular one sided LPs, which I would doubt concern the Melvins to this infinitesimal degree . An etching on the other side would also raise the price.

Gas huffer released comic books with every release up to The Rest of Us.  Most had the lyrics illustrated,  others were just art work.

It was a nice touch. Some of the band members were illustraters. Gas Huffer band members all contributed to the artwork.  Bone's has a job now with Rolling Stone Magazine.

Back to the Melvins. I wonder if the Melvins will have thier lyrics illustrated, or will the comic be some other art?

Illustrating the lyrics would mean an explaination to the meaning of the songs. This would be a first for the Melvins.

I'm very excited.

I'm also excited about the one sided LP.  I've never seen etched artwork on the blank side. Does any one have an example.

I remember Johnny Winter's second album had three sides. This confused the hell out of my cousin.

Taken from http://iwilldestroyyounews.blogspot.com/2008/01/melvins-comic-book-progress.html

QuoteThe words that the Talking Horse are speaking are what I have deciphered as some of the lyrics to songs from the album. Though, forgive me if some of them aren't completely accurate- I couldn't get the lyrics from Buzz because he said they were never "typed out." So, they are what I think I heard in some of the songs. The character who pulls the horse's head off is supposed to be the Blood Witch (track 2 of the album). And in the last couple of panels of page 6, you can see The Civilized Worm (track 3), an armless legless man creeping into the picture.

LIKE CHOCOLATE AND PEANUT BUTTER: TOM NEELY vs THE MELVINS

From HH blogs

we've been hollerin' about this melvins "(a) senile animal" project for a while, but it's really, finally, truly nearing completion. above are some images of the "your disease spread quick" comic, inspired by the music of the melvins, written and drawn by tom neely , published by robotic boot (a subdivision of hydra head industries). the comic is making its debut at tom neely's table at san diego comic con this weekend, as well as on the merch table on the current melvins/big business tour. in the next 2-3 weeks it will also be available as part of "(a) senile animal" box set, which will also include a 4 x LP vinyl version of the album of the same name and a fancy-schmancy melvins belt buckle. this shit is gonna be amazing - which sort of goes without saying since it involves the unholy trinity of hydra head, the melvins, and tom neely. we'll be doing some sort of party for the release of the box set with our friends in LA at the highly esteemed secret headquarters comic shop. more details on that and the exact release of the box set soon. the 4 x LP, belt buckle, and comic book will be available individually through the HHR webstore (and select retail outlets) for those of you that somehow mistakenly believe you don't need the super-deluxe-totally-fucking-awesome box set.

I wondered that too.  I know the creator (tom neely) knows better than that.

don't use that posted page as an example of what its like though.  that is the back cover. its more like the pics posted early in this thread.   very little text.  all (A)SA lyrics.
